I’m guessing with his head and severed arm held high in the sky and keep pushing the boundaries of his life like we all do everyday. And saying yah I just cut my arm off without and medication anesthesia etc. to save myself from dying in a dark cave all alone does that mean I’m gonna now sit down and cry like a little girl that my arms gone and my life’s over no I’m gonna keep going and keep trying my very best everyday and give it my best shot and that’s all anyone can ever ask to someone.

This isn't about him being a 'less talented climber'. He basically starred death in the face for hours and still had the courage to pull back into life. That is what this is about. Life is a test in many ways - this shows how anything is possible if you try. An amazing individual and I really hope docs can somehow invent prosthetics that mimmic real arms so he gets it back!

Honestly, I could NEVER do that. The mere thought of cutting off my own arm - even to save my life - makes me feel faint. Aron makes it sound like it was the obvious and only choice but I doubt anybody I know could ever do that. This guy is just amazing.

you really cant say that for sure, when you are in life or death situations who you are as a person, your character, disappears. instinct kicks in and wild things happen. thats the thing with all animals including humans, self preservation & the "will to survive" push you from accepting your death to doing the last most drastic thing possible to have a shot of survival.

just did my first canyon in Robber's Roost, where he cut his arm off, and I have to say... That is not the place to go alone without telling anyone. Hopefully we've all learned lessons from this man, not just glorified him. We did the East fork of Blue John Canyon to the main fork, a slightly more technical section than he was in.

And another thing is, it's not like he is out there showing off. How can you show something like that off? I can't even begin to imagine how he feels everyday. No wonder he is still stunned and in disbelief. It's easy for any one of us to think about what we could have or wouldn't have done, but the fact of the matter is that you either want to live or die. Although he wasn't very smart going alone and not telling anyone, at least his positive attitude towards life kept him alive!!!

The surge of rage that lay within him was finally unleashed. It was the spirit within that was always there. The spirit of his ancestors. The spirit of life. many things make this story remarkable, like the character in the movie says, it was almost like it was meant to be, I like the part in the movie where he says this rock was waiting for me since the day I was born, everything in my life, every decision, has led me to this place, and the fact that he saw a vision of his son makes it incredible, he wasn't stupid, he is very smart had a good job, speaks many languages, plays piano very good, etc... but like he said is like it was meant to happen

Truly an inspirational story of personal discovery and will to survive. I to be able to have in that situation take your life in your hands and survive is incredible. everyone keep in mind that the most painful part was his hand being crushed by the rock. by the time he had started to amputate his own arm, he was so delirious that he probably did not feel as much pain as his hand being flattened. the hand was already "gone", so to break it off would of course be painful, but not as painful as getting your hand crushed flat.

Don't know why this guy gets all the attention. There was another guy who got his hand caught in an combine, and during the process of stopping the gears from turning he caused the motor to throw sparks. This started an fire, and he jammed the knife in at mid bicep, and had to hack his arm off in a matter of minutes before he burned to death. Now I realize Aron's took some guts too, but this other guy was on fire, and hacked his arm off in much less time.

I'm glad I saw this video. I just read the book which was fascinating about his story of survival. But what was missing was his thoughts on why God allowed him to survive and what he's suppose to do (or is doing) with this gift. This video helps a lot in filling answering that question. Seems like Aron should write another book about his journey in the years after his amazing survival.

On the other hand, Im sure that Aron, being smart as he is, knew since the first few days he had to break his bone to be able to cut himself free. He might had the hope of getting rescued, get free somehow, or simply the instinct to live longer before do it, but he knew what was happening. That doesnt change the fact hes a Hero and a great teacher. Im also sure he fought through the days with his arm and the rock to the point he lost his strength many times. Damn, must been really hard times.

My leg got chopped off and after 3 surgeries the wonderful doctors reattached it and I played pro softball for the next 12 years. Mostly making that level because of how fast I could run. Nothing makes you appreciate your body like losing part of it. What I went through was not nearly as drastic as his ordeal, I was working and surrounded by people when it happened, but I can relate. Thank God for Doctors. Particularly Doctor Ronald Heisey at Bayshore Medical in Pasadena, Texas.

TO THE PEOPLE WHO CANT UNDERSTAND WHY OTHERS CARE ABOUT THIS: Hes not a hero for saving the world, or giving his life to save other lifes. Not a hero in that way. @jimiw93 I wasn't talking about Aron, not breaking his bone. I was saying that Sampson Parker didn't have time to make that decision. He just started hacking his arm off, bone, and all with his 3 inch pocket knife, because he was on fire. What I've been saying, is that I don't know which one is worse. Cutting your arm off in a hurry like Sampson had to due to being on fire, or like Aron did over several days. I think, for myself I would prefer Aron's ordeal over Sampson's ordeal.
