Partly because humans aren’t solitary creatures. We evolved to be in groups. In a wild type setting a lone human was a dead human. Ask survivalists and they’ll tell you that even have one other person with you dramatically increases your chances of survival.

Thank you! I've heard so much bad advice about bears. It was my cat who knew what to do. Even to discourage an attack by a bear, you drop down low and curl up. This is what happened. My cat often went along with my dog and I for walks. At the time we lived in a small house in the woods. One time, as we were walking, we happened upon a bear. My dog and I just stood there (to his credit, my dog did not bark), but my cat, who was in front of us, just laid down on the ground, very purposefully, and slowly wagged his tail. It was, as if to say, "nothing to see here. Nope. Just move along." So I dropped down, crouching and bid my dog sit. The bear watched us for a moment, then moved on. Of course, the moment he was out of sight, we all ran for the house. LOL! Smartest cat I ever had. He was legendary. Thank you, also, for getting it right about any animal being a "man-killer." It's much easier said than done to, for example, let a bear maul you a little to save your life rather than to try and avoid all harm entirely even though you're actually more likely to be more seriously injured that way

One of the biggest and most important things is, Keeping your calm and using your head as long as you can. what is absolutely fantastic to me about the film Into the Wild is that it does not intend to drive people to become survivalists, it intends to show to the audience is that while nature and individualism are good aspects of life and we should appreciate them, we must also recognize that we are social animals, and that one of the absolute greatest natural wonders of our world is that of companionship we find in other humans, and how that helps both us, and those we are finding companionship with. perfectly presented by the relationships chris forms with people, becoming a found family of sorts to him, and him leaving a note at the end of the film saying “Happiness is only real when shared”, under his true name of Christopher, rather than his alias of Alexander Supertramp. god, i love that film

I LOVE how he specially references “You’re not going to eat a Zebra laying out because it’s Africa.” LITERALLY calling out Man VS Wild when he did literally that. Ate a disgusting decaying Zebra in Africa, obviously placed there xD I love Les.

And how many minutes would it take before hyenas, lions and the rest were there eating it? "excuse me guys, I'm weak and have no pointy teeth, but opposable thumbs and a cell phone, so I shall eat that zebra first..."

Chris was a terrible survivalist with a giant heart. He was also really smart. With some training he could have been one of the best survivalists of all time. But patience and calculations were exactly what he wanted to avoid as he saw freedom in chaos and lusted over a life that did not have predictability.
@y2kraye4 жыл бұрын

Les Stroud had so much knowledge when it comes to survival. Especially when explaining stuff like edible plants. You know he has been in a lot of these situations first hand. And for the most part, that’s how you best learn is by being out in nature (hopefully with a mentor). I wish someone could do a film on Simon Kenton and “The Frontiersmen”.

Bless this man for being so brutally honest about Chris McCandless. I remember reading Into the Wild in high school, and being dumbfounded how this dude who had never even been camping before thought he could survive completely isolated in Alaska.
@poeticdisaster75004 жыл бұрын
Yes he was kind with his words.... unlike others ive heard. He knows it was foolish but wasnt going to make a whole lot about it... it happend , the plants were the point! Instead of the travesty

I call that movie “Into the Schoolbus”. Dude doesn’t even set up his own shelter. He lives in a fricking derelict bus.
@poeticdisaster75004 жыл бұрын
@@Axle-F the bus is a shelter, it wass put there by alaska transit for moose hunters¡ i get what you're saying though ! He could have sealed the windows up, and made it more ""liveable"" and collected plants in the daytime with the book , instead of haphazardly running around the forest. grabing things and mixing them all in a bag.... then munching on um like they were potato chips. Check out the making of the movie with sean penn and john K. They go to he bus and toast a drink chris with his favorite , a white Russian .

Actually if you read the book, the last person to see Chris alive was the one who dropped him off, he offered chris winter boots that are ment for the survival in the wilderness and other things, but chris declined them all, which honestly with winter coming and someone who has lived in Alaska for their entire life, I'll would have taken their advice.
@LarsBlitzer4 жыл бұрын
That's why to a lot of Alaskans familiar with the story and with local bushcraft figure Chris basically committed suicide. They'd say he was a misled, overconfident young man, but unsuited to the area. And those would be the more charitable opinions. Ask a Park Ranger, guide, or Search and Rescue personnel and they'd curse his name to high heaven, mostly for inspiring people to make "pilgrimages" to the bus, or trying their own variation on the trip.

What I've always loved most about Les is that he knows all of most extreme methods to survive, but he puts practicality first. I was reminded of this so much when he said that even though he knows to play dead with a grizzly, he doesn't know if he would run or not.
