When I became an eagle Scout my mom mailed Les and asked him to write me a congratulation letter since he was a huge inspiration for me. Les wrote me an awesome letter and I still have it framed in my house. Thank you for your kind words all those years ago Les!

I love that he says "Here's what you SHOULD do" and then immediately acknowledges that in the moment, in that life or death situation, you absolutely wouldn't. You would do the wrong thing and die, because humans suck under pressure. That's how you know this guy is the real deal.
@gamingwhilebroken2355
@gamingwhilebroken2355 8 ай бұрын
Partly because humans aren’t solitary creatures. We evolved to be in groups. In a wild type setting a lone human was a dead human. Ask survivalists and they’ll tell you that even have one other person with you dramatically increases your chances of survival.

This reminded me about the novel “Hatchet” in the beginning the boy didn’t know anything of survival, he ate berries that ended up making him sick because he was desperate for food. He couldn’t start a fire, and by the end of the book, he became very skilled and his panic and despair went away. That when a person came to save him, he ask the man if he wanted some of the food he had made.

I’m glad he said that about Chris. His story is so sad and dangerous to me. Many of my outdoors friends idolize him as a true individualist who was just trying to find himself and lost. In reality, i feel his arrogance (can’t think of a less harsh word) got the better of him. We cannot make it without others. Survival takes extensive practice, preparation and humility. You have to meet your surroundings with respect or they will humble you.

Les Stroud had so much knowledge when it comes to survival. Especially when explaining stuff like edible plants. You know he has been in a lot of these situations first hand. Actually if you read the book, the last person to see Chris alive was the one who dropped him off, he offered chris winter boots that are ment for the survival in the wilderness and other things, but chris declined them all, which honestly with winter coming and someone who has lived in Alaska for their entire life, I'll would have taken their advice.
@LarsBlitzer
@LarsBlitzer 4 жыл бұрын
That's why to a lot of Alaskans familiar with the story and with local bushcraft figure Chris basically committed suicide. They'd say he was a misled, overconfident young man, but unsuited to the area. And those would be the more charitable opinions. Ask a Park Ranger, guide, or Search and Rescue personnel and they'd curse his name to high heaven, mostly for inspiring people to make "pilgrimages" to the bus, or trying their own variation on the trip.

The first one, "Into The Wild", was about a real set of events in which the main character was surviving for fun but mistakenly ate a large amount of poisonous potato seeds. He was unaware of the danger that they posed(and he didn't know they were corrupted at first) and his condition slowly worsened over 2-3 days until he was hardly able to function. He had no energy and could not get help. He was found dead shortly after his passing with a note telling anyone who had come across his bus to get help immediately (in case he was out getting food)

19:32 listening to Les talk about that moment he had with his dive instructor really made me realize just how awful mine was. On my very last ocean dive before my certification the wind picked up really bad as we were heading to the water. I expressed to the teacher that I was a bit uncomfortable with how rough the water was getting especially since our entry and exist was a really slippery Barnacle covered rock. He completely dismissed my concerns and said we’d be in and out before the water got any worse. So I went in. Once we were far enough out we finally went down but immediately I could tell that I was 1) not getting enough air through my reg and 2) way too buoyant and not sinking properly. So I tried to signal him to go back up but he ignored me and took the two other students down to the bottom. So I was forced to go to the surface alone where the water had gotten exponentially worse. It kept knocking my reg out of my mouth and I was starting to panic. I didn’t want to let go of our small buoy and try to swim to shore cause the water was really scarring me. It felt like forever before everyone finally came back to the surface and when my teacher saw me panicking he just grabbed my bcd and dragged me back to shore and just tossed me like a wet towel onto the rocks to try and climb out. Oh and he failed me for panicking in the ocean so I lost the $500 I spent on the course.

When I went through survival training in Alaska...a LONG time ago...we weren't allowed to start a fire. The instructors called it the "TV". Once it's going, you just sit there and watch when you should be building a shelter, leaving clues for a possible rescue, sourcing water, etc. Of course when it got below 0° they came around and said "okay, you can start a fire now".

@rockyblacksmith 3 жыл бұрын
@@JoshuaTootell Definetly makes sense to think that way in a survival context. Though making a fire AFTER everything else you should be doing would still be in keeping with that logic. I'm used to hicking trips in a group, with fire normally being used for cooking, thus unavioidable. And tasks would usually be split between members of the group, with one person being responsable for the fire, while the rest were preparing the shelter and other things. If one works in a group and that division is kept, then one can avoid the isssue of the "TV" (at least in my experience).

Bear's secret is that he drinks it before he's dehydrated It's not something you should do, but if you have to do it, do it while it still has a fairly high water content so you don't have to drink as much of your precious drinking water early on.

I very much admire Mr Stroud. I recall watching survivor man as a child and he still seems just as humble and “real”. He, along with the Scouts and my parents, is a part of why I love nature and the outdoors so much. I recall having met him once at a Costco in Barrie some 10 years ago haha

My younger autistic brother, fell into a freezing deep river when he was very drunk and disorientated. He told me he reached the edge of the river several times, but it was too slippy or tall or the river swept him away. Only by sheer panic, desperation and good luck did he eventually get out of that river. My brother has amazing stamina, so I can tell you that most of us would have drowned. I thank God, or whoever helped save Philip that night.
