When I was in some Bible thing as a kid, I asked the teacher if Mary was a virgin forever because the Bible specifically mentions Jesus's brothers and sisters. They told me the Bible meant brothers and sisters the way black people did, where they weren't actually related but really close with eachother.

Yeah except if you read Mathew 13:55 it's pretty clear it's his siblings. Why would they mention specific people if they are just non important followers they had to have a significance to be mentioned. He also often refers to his followers as disciples or apostles not brothers. Also there are different words for brother in Hebrew and they used the word which would be for a blood relative so it would be either his half brother or cousins as the word doesn't differentiate between half brothers, brothers by blood, stepbrothers or cousins.

Usually people are operating off stuff their sunday school teacher said when they were 11, and never actually bother to learn anything about the scholarship behind it all. That's a shame, because i think that so much of it impacts us today without us even knowing. Lots of good arguments for/against christianity, but the history/debates/theology/philosophy is actually pretty interesting.

Went through Catholic School, never believed any of it, the education was okay though. Worst part was going to church every Wednesday and Friday. Overall 5/10 experience, probably won't do it again.
@thomasharlovic74709 күн бұрын
Haha so did I, k-12, I’d say 5/10 is a perfect rating, but I get a kick out of people always assuming the absolute worst. Whenever I bring up going to Catholic school, my partner always acts like I’m an escaped cult member re-adjusting to society. I’m just like “nah it was pretty normal, we just had a class about sacraments and wore itchy polo shirts, but kids still got high in the parking lot before school just like anywhere else.”

Is it really so surprising in a time where life feels more and more pointless for the majority of people that everyone is turning to religions again?
@imageword55764 ай бұрын
not surprising, it makes a lot of sense. You're gonna basically believe in something in a platonic ideal sense. Boomers were able to believe in the idea of an endless materialistic progress because they came up in a time of abundance, but then when it became apparent that that was just a temporary thing to newer generations, the newer gens have had to go back to believing in some form of afterlife or something non-material in order to get on with life.

I think the surprising thing is how self-aware a lot of contemporary religious belief (if you want to call it that) actually is. It's not like all these young people are turning back to religion due to having some profound spiritual revelation. It's more like they're just *deciding* to believe in it from a weirdly practical place.

Say what you want about the Catholics but they are genuinely very friendly and a kind people. A lot of Catholics helped me get through a dark time in my life when no other religious community would. That’s something I’ll forever be grateful for and remember about the Catholics.

Wanted to give a little perspective as a zoomer who is living the life you're describing: I think you're right that the 'world of endless possibilities' perspective just doesn't exist for my generation so much, but I don't think this is a bad thing necessarily. I think people are turning to more stable organizations instead of trying to change the world, usually to no avail. Young people just wanna settle down, have a family, stay connected to the community through church, and have a decent job to depend on during economic turmoil. I think it's millennials who are more fucked in the long term, because they are gonna be in their mid 40s and 50s, no roots in the places they grew up, adolescent mindset, and if shit _really_ hits the fan they're not gonna have the skills and support to hunker down and weather through it. I'm 24, I'm in school for my master's degree, I have a wife and we're planning to have kids once I've graduated - I feel very good about my future. As for Catholicism, I couldn't bite for that one either. I went with Eastern Orthodox. It seemed a little less child touchy, at least to the point where I could safeguard any of my own children, and seemed more serious in practice than Catholicism. Though I don't have Catholic parents and grandparents, so I could see why someone would go for that if all of their relatives were. I am worried though that people are going to take for granted the amount of 'free thinking' they were allowed, and that they're not gonna set healthy boundaries between themselves and the church. I think a lot of people are gonna fall into a bandwagon of acting like old-ass republicans crying about satanic books in school and other gay shit like that, and that's just gonna make the next generation swing towards the progressive/woke side of things again. No one understands moderation and just try to throw themselves entirely behind something without hedging their own bets on themselves. Anyway sorry for the textbook-long response. Love you Stavvy, make sure to call your mom, your aunties, uncles and grandparents and wish them a happy lent.

@@HaloFan117_ I was pagan for a long time before getting into Christian theology. I was a member of Ár nDraíocht Féin and was very big on pagan reconstruction and revivalism. I can tell you first hand that it pales in comparison to the depth of thought of Christian theology and pales to the actual, real connectedness you have to people around you when a part of a church network. The most I ever got to a community of druids was a discord server of the most bitchy, mentally unwell people I've ever spent time with. Neopaganism is a very embarrassing and shallow invention of the 20th century, I don't believe it's a serious alternative.
