One of the more curious facts about Japanese society is that it is culturally and ethnically homogenous, with over 98% of Japanese citizens being considered ethnic Japanese. And comparatively speaking, there is only a very small proportion of citizens who are either non-Japanese or have mixed Japanese blood, known as “hafus.” This creates both unique challenges and unexpected advantages. To understand better what they actually face, today we’re going to meet three “hafu” Japanese to discuss their experiences of living in Japan.
Special thanks to our 3 guests.

Better understanding and awareness of each other's cultures and a celebration of both worlds, being mixed should be a celebration of life and the diversity we have, it should never be looked down on, its a shame some people stay small minded and dont care to engage with people as they are. That's so awful. It happened a few times with me. We're all brazilians and here all people are mixed, really, so we have all the races you can think of. But my dad is half german and my mom "fully" brazilian, she has the "latina" appearance. Where we used to live in it wasn't usual to see someone as blond as my father and in all my teenager years I've experienced people thinking I somehow was dating my dad when we were out alone.

This was such a great interview. I watched the documentary about Halfu too, which came out a few years ago. It kind of breaks my heart to hear some of these stories. I really understand these young people. I'm much older than them but I guess they still struggle with being half. I'm half Korean and half American. I live in the US on the east coast, but have visited Korea several times to see family. They are very accepting of me there as far as I can tell. Being half has it's challenges. I'm a little surprised with the racism the Italian experienced in Hawaii. I thought that there was a large population of Japanese there. I grew up in the South but in a city with a large military base. Many of my friends were half Korean because our mothers were friends. I don't recall experiencing that much racism but I can pass for hispanic or some other race, even Persian for some reason. I feel for all the other halfs out there wherever you are! I agreed with so much of what they said. There are challenges but I embrace my Korean side even though I'm never seen as Korean whether in the US or in South Korea. I hope that we continue to grow in how we treat people and embrace their differences. This was such a great interview. And the half Korean was right. They did do something here. They really opened up and honestly talked about their experiences, which helps other people like us and maybe it helps others to understand what it's like to be mixed race. I struggle sometimes with even saying oh I'm half American, or is it white or caucasian or West Virginian. I do feel isolated though. I have isolated myself from my mother more since my father passed away and from my family in Korea and I have no other family in the US. I live alone. And COVID really adds to that isolation. To be honest, I wish I understood my mother more. So I binge watch Korean dramas and movies, looking for some understanding of the culture I'm so disconnected from, living here in the US. I could go on, but I'll leave it at that.

I'm half Kenyan, half Japanese. I don't have physical features of Japanese but this Bahamian guy has vindicated me. Sometimes I even shy from saying that I'm half Japanese because people don't believe me until i show them my dad's picture. I was born and bred in Kenya and only visited Japan once so that makes it even harder. My dad used to visit Kenya but he stopped visiting. I would really love to find him. I truly miss him.

Its cool that the Korean mixed guy speaks perfect English while growing up in Korea and not having the English based heritage wow And excuse me if my English isn’t good. I’m not a native speaker (Regarding the reply’s this comment has ↓) Why r people even replying to me. Some of them don’t make sense, as a reply to what I commented. I’m Japanese and I’ve seen fluent / non fluent Japanese and Koreans, but of course I feel uncomfortable saying broadly “Japanese/Korean do/don’t speak English”. I just genuinely thought that it was cool he spoke a foreign language since I myself is facing the difficulties of that ( I study German). Just wanted to make my comment clear.

Very relatable.. I’m also half Japanese, but the other half being Canadian (Irish/ Scottish descent). I go back and forth but I prefer living in Canada because of the racism I experienced in Japan (I lived in a fairly rural area), even though it’s where I grew up. I always get comments on my facial features and physical appearance and it is extremely annoying to have to explain to people what I am and I can speak their language whether it be English or Japanese. Japan is lovely and it’s my home but I never quite feel like I belong there, or anywhere. It was nice to see people discussing their experiences and I agree with them so much. Being half has made me more mature and understanding and hopefully these qualities and experiences can be used for something good.

@@rebeccablackvirus975 doesn't mean its right though, and if people are constantly asking you why you look different, you're gonna feel different and left out at some point, and in a rural place in Japan that's most likely what's gonna happens. whilst in Canada it's way less likely cause it's way more diverse and theres a lot more mixed people of all ethnicities, so it's no surprise she felt more welcome in Canada cause everyones more use to all the different ethnicities, so they won't pry as much and have more common sense when it comes to asking questions about race.

i'm boThanks for doing this work. I am Portuguese myself, both my parents are obviously Portuguese and so are their parents before that. Yet I was born in 1984 and eventually found out about Japan and all the different stuff was made aware in my naive brain, which I try to understand and respect in my years. This video helped me immensely in trying to understand the reality from people living like that - just by being born. On the flipside: the stories about these people are just SO INTERESTING! I don't care about how much percentage they are of their so-called "ethnicity" - I feel it's just so interesting to have stories of life that by telling a different person (such as me, from TOTALLY AROUND the world can listen to and appreciate) can provide an interesting perspective. I'm born in '84 in Portugal, English is alien, Japanese is like uber 9000 levels of alien but many years later I still connect. Cheers to all! Still, it's so harsh learning about so much difficulty faced by people growing up between "half" parents :(
