What does it mean to be Hindu? Hinduism is the world's oldest faith. It's an embattled identity, says Makarand Paranjape, professor at JNU, who has been in the news for giving the alternative perspective to the Left in the nationalism debate in India. He is a scholar of Hinduism with several books to his credit. He talks to Hindol Sengupta about why Hinduism and its core values need to be understood and celebrated in new, myriad ways in 21st century India.

Such a nice talk. It is always so heartening and enriching to listen to Professor saheb. I like the line when he said that 'hindus have become like those against whom they have stood", very true. We have become so intolerant towards different forms of hinduism . We are shying away to discuss our own scriptures and stories (like shankracharya and chandaal) just to justify caste. We need Renaissance and yes we will !

Makarand Ji is a brilliant professor, no denying it. However, "Truth is one, but sages call it by many names", no sane sage ever called God "Allah" or "Yahweh" or "Christ"! By misquoting this particular Vedic verse, he has proved that he is not a real expert in Hinduism. He has studied Hinduism not from Indic authors, because if he had, then he would know for sure about radical universalism!

I disagree . Even akbar , humayun , shah Jehan were not really deen e ilahi , as is propagated . They were just marking time to become daarul islam before slamming it on non muslims . jodha may have been allowed to remain Hindu to create confidence in the Hindu population mughals ruled over. Not a Permanent Acceptance . mughal mindset continued and in 1940s jinnah came up with islamic state ideology ,pursued it , and broke India into three .NO AKBAR ... MUGHAL , TURK , PERSIAN , OR ANY MUSLIM WAS A BENEVOLENT BADSHAH...SULTAN IN TRUE SENSE .DECEPTION IS THEIR QURAANIC INJUNCTION .PERSIAN SCHOLARS STUDIED OUR DHAARMIC TEXTS , ONLY TO STEAL ,HIJACK THEM AND CLAIM THEM AS THEIRS ...

One person who is not 'embarassed' at being a 'Hindu' ,he is actually a modern day 'Swamy' ji,he is also 'educated' in the real sense. In a crux put very simply,'Thakur ji 'Ramkrishna Paramhansa' says 'Jato Mat Tato Path' ,as many paths to the Almighty as many beliefs.

Sir, where does the notion of "Jambu Dwipa" come from? That term finds its way in the scriptures, but the period before India crashed into the Asian plate was so old, it could not have been known at the time of thinking of the scriptures. I've been trying to find out for some years.

why the hell wouldnt it be known. pls dont assume anything. try to know the extent of time frame of santhan dharma and not from our badly written history books. in many senses its as old as eternity.

A view regarding untouchability - even today we see people don't like to touch dirt and other dirty things and want to keep themselves neat and clean that could be a possibility why earlier people believed in untouchability. Also agree that it was too strictly implemented and to a bad level but was for the above stated reason.

By birth each and every person is a hindu, the child becomes Christian post baptism without which the child cannot be a Christian and Muslim post shahada with minimum 2 witnesses without which the conversion to muslim is incomplete, till then the child is a hindu, though the child may not be born in a hindu family. And in Hinduism there is no such ritual as we believe we are hindu by birth.

The rigidity of caste system and social immobility was created to a great extent by the "Criminal Tribes Act" of 1873 by the British, that tried to equate the varna system of India with their own class system. Prior to this act coming into force, sudra children and women could go to gurukul and get educated, change his/her occupation and climb the social ladder. Although some varnas were trade centric, and they followed mostly their traditional trade, where skill was learnt and transferred through generations.India had a very high literacy rate before the British colonisation.

In every Indian village which has retained anything of its form.the rudiments of knowledge are sought to be imparted, there is not a child, except those of the outcasts (who form no part of the community), who is not able to read, to write, to cipher; in the last branch of learning, they are confessedly most proficient. - Ludlow, British India,1858

Ekam satyam vipra bahudha vadanti does not bring pluralism or multiculturalism. It says one truth can be expressed by various wisemen. But their truth should would not be conflicting with each other if examined properly. So this does not helps bring any sort of cosmopolitan culture. Jainism anekantwad is refuted so does Buddhism charwak like philosophy by Adi Shankracharya. But yes we do not consider it a reason enough to kill people who are not convinced by our belief. That is where difference exists.

Professor despite all the knowledge of kafur, haram and hell you say the real fight is not theological but social, financial. You of all people should know that theology creates the moral and ideology on the human mind that follows it by birth. The social psychological impact of these theologies metamorphose into the social and the financial e.g., the temple loot for wealth can be justified for finance but what would you say about the "destruction of the temple and deities".
