The Victorian Branch of the Australian Fabians hosts a special social and fundraising dinner every year, inviting an esteemed guest speaker to deliver a lecture at the event.
The guest, Barry Jones AC was unfortunately unwell at the time, and while his speech was delivered at the dinner via proxy, it is here delivered by Barry himself for the Australian Fabians.
A Fabian’s tribute to Barry Jones AC, polymath, writer, teacher, lawyer, social activist, former ALP Minister and respected ALP elder. He became a household name as national quiz champion in the 1960’s and is recognised today by the National Trust as one of Australia’s living treasures.
Fellow Fabians and guests both in person and online had the opportunity to listen to Barry's thoughts on “Being honest with ourselves”, his reflections on what he sees as the pressing issues of our time. As well as talking about equality, a key Fabians principle, Barry's speech presented his ideas on Australia's anachronistic Constitution, the dilemma of pursuing "the vehicle or the destination" and the challenge of complexity - and getting out of Plato's cave.
