One thing I remain troubled by is Melanie Phillips's comment, circa "we gave rhe world civilisation". 1. This is highly contestable. It is ill judged and unnecessary. The perils of "giving morality [civilisation] to the world" is dramatically explored by George Steiner in Portage to San Christobal, and look out for the AH defence. 2. It is both ignorant and insulting to other ancient civilisations. You don't 'win' by claiming this No.1 spot, because in 2023, anyone will retort "so what?" 3. The mythos and theology can reinforce a strong sense of identity and continuity. But straying into some hermetically sealed sense of purpose, strikes me as hubristic. 4. Witnessing the UN Gen Assembly shows that Israel is at the centre of the emerging schism in global politics, just when it needs not to be. 5. Countries, like communities, are constantly challenged by events. Their responses have to be pragmatic, tactical and strategic. I worry constantly about the global rise in anti-Jewish hate, and hope with all my heart, that we all find a way through.

I'm a retired Harvard prof living in inland California: I did all my postgrad studies in England, for five years in the late 1970s. Britain was mostly a decent place then, but SOAS was vile. My Dad had many relatives in north London and I always spent Shabbat and holidays with those infinitely kind, hospitable, warm people. American academia is hell. I lived that hell. I honestly don't think that the Jewish population has suffered as much as the Muslim population in regard to racism . It's only been around three months since October 7th, yet Muslims have had to suffer over 20 years of racism since 9/11. I have been appalled by the thinly veiled antisemitism of the Left in the C21st; but, I could never have imagined the idealogical nexus of Islamism and Leftist Jew hatred would reveal itself to everyone out of the unambiguously horrifying events of 7/10. I have been deeply shaken by the horror of 7/10 ;and whilst I have been heartened by the solidarity of Western governments with Israel, I have been depressed about the shameless antisemitism in some media and on some streets in the West. I have felt powerless in the face of this added injustice and the echos of previous generations abdication of their humanity and failure to do what is right. I donated to ZAKA, signed petitions and have cancelled my TV license (something I had only wished I had the courage to do before) because I cannot in good conscience pay for hateful antisemitic propaganda. I wish I could do more to shake Israel's European, American And Antipodean detractors to at least have an accurate understanding of the history of the land upon which so much conflict is framed; and for them to know that it is really about a seething irrational epigenetic hatred of Jews rather than who owns/rents what was mostly desert the whole time. As outrageous as the BBC, NYT, Australia's ABC, The Guardian and the other usual suspects have been; they, the academics and students that have been defenders or apologists for terrorism are reviled by most people. Their bigotry on such blatant display has marginalised them from their audiences, employers, and those that truly care about peoples' suffering. I believe this moment is 'seismic'; that it is the fork in the road. The mask has come of the ideology the has poisoned the Western world in recent years and has allowed this moral aberration in response to an objective horror against Israelis. I believe we all need courage to stand for what is right; and intellectual honesty to call the rape, murder, torture and kidnap of women and children evil without caveat.

Different topic but I see Chomsky in a completely different light since the Putin regime's invasion of Ukraine. This is a topic about which I know a lot. I'm a Christian and I'm deeply ashamed of my fellow countrymen's hatred of Jews. No true Christian can hate Israel. Jews alone didn't kill Christ - Gentile and Jew conspired, representing the whole world. Those who claim Jews alone killed Christ haven't read the Bible. All Christians are spiritual Jews and we are grateful to them: without Jews we would not have the bible, the Tanakh. "For he is not a Jew , which is one outwardly; neither is that circumcision, which is outward in the flesh: But he is a Jew, which is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit and not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God." Romans 2:28&29. Christians have been grafted into Israel by faith. Romans 11:17-24. We Gentiles, "who were aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise .... "are now partakers of that promise by faith" Ephesians 2:12-14.

Thank you for mentioning Romans 11, not many teachers seem to preach on Romans 9-11 where it quite clearly says God has not rejected the Jewish people. Rosie HIggs

Labour Party under Corbyn was not a party I felt proud of as a Jew. And I see myself as a Socialist. The number of Labour members who are hostile to Jews is large. So this explains JC's response. Not surprised.
