I'm not even Latina but I watched La Rosa de Guadalupe (still do!) to help with Spanish comprehension/vocab. It's funny enough that it's become a meme now.

I now have a desperate urgent need to watch novella’s even though I don’t speak Spanish … I hope I don’t open a rift in the space time continuum

Here's my question. As a person who is not really familiar with Mexico, Central America, or South America... is the division between white Latinos and everyone else as bad as Louis CK tries to make it out to be? Louis CK tells stories about growing up in Mexico and his stories are eye-opening. It wasn't exactly Jim Crow what he was describing sounded rough.

It's not. The concept of race is different in Latin America than it is in the USA. Not that racism doesn't exist, but it's more classism than anything. However, that trend has changed and is getting better, especially with AMLO's presidency. Here's a fact, Mexico had its first African president before the US ever did. It even had its first Indigenous president and now the first woman president and Jewish president in a country majority catholic. Mexico ended slavery way before the US. After Mexico elected its first female president, no one in the Mexican media nor the people commented that she was Jewish. Don't get me wrong, the opposition would make a snarky remark occasionally to put fear in voters, but it didn't bother the overall populace. In the US, the media constantly mentioned she was Jewish. So, to answer your question, no, it's not a big issue as it is in the US. Some Americans like these in the video are so disconnected from Latin american culture they tend to make things up that serve their personal view without knowing one bit about their culture. In one of their videos, they were shocked that they had Spanish DNA. Some of these so-called Latinos don't even speak Spanish.

@@PaulyWally30 Yeah I thought it might be something like you're describing because Louis CK was a kid and teenager in Mexico in the 1970s and 80s. And then he moved to Massachusetts. But when you get into South American countries like Argentina and Brazil, the conversation is much different. Let's not forget the Nazis didn't flee to Argentina and Brazil because they were nice vacation spots.

I mean listen no matter where in Latin America if you have blonde hair blue eyes (or just white passing) you have advantages & society treats you way different compared if you look indigenous, that’s why there is that “slur” word indio, when ppl are saying it usually they’re putting that person down, just look at when yalitzia apiricio was getting lots of love, other white passing actors where criticizing her success. I mean if you look at telenovelas it tells you everything cause rarely you see a very indigenous looking family to be the wealthy ones (yes many of us are mixed af, but evan eva Longoria has talked about how she wasn’t considered pretty compared to her sisters, colorism is a thing for sure

@@Charlierose214 There is no such thing as passing white. White in Latin America has a different connotation than in the USA. Even a person who says they are white in the US isn't white if you look at how pink their skin is or olive, but they are white without saying passing white. The Yaritza issue was due to more envy because she was not an actor by profession as those who criticized her, and this nobody comes up from the ground and makes it big well those in the profession got envious of her for that. Unfortunately, it turned racist due to some of their remarks. As for the blonde hair and blue eyes, that's a misconception that once again is a disconnect with the social ongoings in Latin America. In my personal experience, they don't get preferred treatment. As for the telenovelas, well, that has caused some social issues, but one has to look at the social mapping. Putting an Indigenous on the screen as a lead would not garner too many viewers since they are considered a minority of the Mexican population. It's just numbers, nothing more. They could take a chance and do it, but too many factors are at play that would not go well for the studio financially. They did do it in Colombia with a black lead many years ago. I'm not sure how that went, but I heard it was popular. When it comes to race, Latin America cannot compete with the USA's racial tensions.
