Update! Eve talks about dramaturgy in the social sense found in Shakespeare. Which is why I focused on the social definition of dramaturgy because that made more sense than stage composition: twitter.com/harapecoEN/status/1474019364940967938?t=eiUBvnpuUVN0RE8FUobD5g&s=19 You can watch my video on As You Like It, a Shakespeare play is also titled this and talks about dramaturgy: kzbin.info/www/bejne/p5Oag5dupNKjkNE

good analysis but I feel like you left out a big detail. Dramaturgy can also refer to "the study of dramatic composition and the representation of the main elements of drama on the stage" in relation to theatre. This also explains the parts where the lyrics mention performing and acting as well as the literal stage the main character dances on. He also wears several masks which, in the Roman days, was practically required when acting in a play as it disassociated the actor from the character.

Theatrical masks are a curious topic. First little theatre quibble to clear up, masks in antiquity dervive from the Greeks not the Roman's. Roman theatre and pantomime did absolutely use masks, but that was an inheritance from the conquered Greeks. As for there function in Greeco Roman theatre it was to presumed to be a functional shorthand rather than a neccity of actors role swapping mid play. Most classical plays stick to some ridged unities of structure. 1 location, 24 hours time period, 1-4 named roles and a choir that acted as an audience surrogate/plot regurgitator. Though some choir members have been postulated to briefly break from the group to fill minor roles such as messengers, though a change of mask would have been unnecessary as distancing from the choral unit made that role switch plain. The big benefits of masks were their exaggerated features, which could communicate status and archtype more clearly to the far reaches of festival amphitheaters. Makes it easy to find the hero so you know whose downfall to focus on. Lol. It also stands to reason that masks were also used help amplify the voices of the actor since again they had to full send every word to the back of a huge outdoor space where audiences were expected to be conversing., though we have no proof of masks being amplifiers and I had classmates who would throw hands at that speculation.

Hello! I currently study Sociology in university and I've always thought of interpreting this song in the sociological context like what you did here, even though it leans more on the literary/Shakespearean context. Your analytical application of Erving Goffman's Dramaturgy model was so well and in terms of the "front stage" and "back stage" self, the "roles" we all play, and the conflict we feel (like Kurukuru) in balancing all those elements when conceptualizing our identity and who we are. Thank you so much for this video!! Right now im watching all of your uploads, and im really happy because i havent really seen videos about eve's mvs :) I wanted to share a thought i had a while ago, i commented this on the original dramaturgy mv so i am going to copy+paste it here. Some days ago i read kara no kioku and i cant wait for the next chapter!! I have been listening to eve's songs since last year's summer and i love the theories and the story behind his songs. When i read the manga i paid very close attention in each and every panel, and i noticed something. In the chapter with hitotsume when the protag meets him and he puts his hand inside the hole in his chest, protag feels like he's about to die and faints. I rewatched this mv and i noticed at 3:02 (in the original mv) the lyrics and drawings kind of seem similar to what happened to protag in kara no kioku, since kurukuru has a hole too but instead of his chest he has it in his back. Maybe people that get the monster thingies happen to have a hole first and then hitotsume fixes them somehow? Just like in literary nonsense with the protag who has a hole in his head. Idk these are just some of my thoughts, i dont know if anyone will even read this but yeah :') Also i call kara no kioku's protag "protag" because i keep forgetting his name 💔 That's what i wrote back then, and i hope it makes sense :D

I know im late, but my theory isA person is fighting against them self against truth and lie because dramaturgy is the theory that we are not our own, however each individual person is an actor and not a personality whom change based on audience, place and situation. So this person believes that, As by seeing the way their arms move it can be assumed that this person is fighting themselves against them problems, as the lyrics say “Emotions and feelings are to useless to keep” “Yes yes, take a deep breath, you know how this will all end” “oh wait, took it to far-“ Is signifying that the singer knows the outcome of the problem but is choosing to ignore it because it hurts to think about as supporting with the chorus, heres an example, *Your friend group of 6, the therapist / mother friend, The edgy smart guy, the two childish arguers, The shy person, and the kind extroverted introvert. Its the perfect friendgroup. You all joke around and its what seems can ve the perfect friendgroup. However you guys break into a fight do to this childish joking around you have of teasing. Your a bit of the “cool” person in the group you are there for people hut your really bad at your own feelings your rude but kind and have no sympathy for others you just pretend to. Basically your an ENTP. This stuff has happened a lot to you. And your friendships have ended the same so you know how this will play out and you basically give up on this friendship of yours. But the thing is, you love this friendgroup its nothing like your others beside you being in it, so you begin to wonder if you should worry or not about saving it. Live any other day your on your own, you always have been you laugh at everything and get mad when your embarrassed your so overwhelmed by lies youve told people and yourself your a body with nobody inside, youve lost your faith (this is the beginning of the song” you in a way your jokes are to start drama joking not fatal drama though because you like to watch it, you see life as a movie so this is where Knew it already fine, misery inside At myself, I would laugh, fallen down behind But I don't know a thing, love or losing, see? So I threw to the side any human in me If I live a lie of shallow words and empty replies "Then what am I?" Hitting the walls of a stage that I couldn’t break Then it stuck to my head, gotta run away Playing out like a scene, posing every lead Near the end of the show, waiting in the wing, see? Run to the front stage, you're all actors anyway No one to watch, you're all part of the play Kind of comes in, your unable to feel things really as you see feelings as just a thought you can ignore because it has no affect on you physically. But you realize youve come to love this friendgroup and you actually want to try its only half decided because your forcing yourself to feel “blocking every little thought that i couldnt sit through” thats what i mean. Thats what you always do. I think the character in this video represents the person in this example im explaining because of the way their acting and their hand gestures as well as their appearance. I have a lot more to say but im bored now so yeah* Sorry for so much this took me 30 minutes, i see myself and the singer as the “you” in this case. Thats why i understand every little word said in this song but its so much to go over it all

3 years late but being a weeb and theatre dweeb whose had an unhealthy dedication to this song my hat so enters the ring. "All the worlds a stage, all the men and women, merely players..." - As You Like It courtesy of Shakespeare. As humans we are fundamentally creatures of narrative, we tell stories not only for entertainment, but as a means of pack survival. We take the actions of others, extrapolate those actions to outcomes either positive or negative, and use that mimetic storytelling to inform our actions, beliefs, and sense of self. It is ingrained in a swath of cultures to perform in concurrence with social norms and scripts, where role noncompliance is treated with mistrust or active disavowel from the group. So dispite our individual rationalization that we each much surely be the narratives protagonist, we find ourselves forced to wear the masks we are expect to wear. A performatove mask, disconnected from our interior identities. Expected to fit the dramatis personae some invisable playwright set out for us. Which given our ability to adapt and contain multitudes is something we all do, the only truely unfortunate outcome is if we adopt those persona so thoroughly that we completely lose the character we know as our true selves, our identities..

Welp guess ima tell you what this song means to me. My life is a stage, every time I go out put on a mask hidding myself, as soon as my mask comes off I shatter, why am I crying is it because I know there a demon under this mask, or is because life devoured me, whilst I was lost, please stop me from eating life. Why can't the demon that resides in my heart behind a mask forgive me why can't I feel emotion. If this makes sense to you it connects dramaturgy, outsider, and how to eat life.

What do you think the ending of the MV means? I mostly understand the song, but can't seem to figure out what's up with Fukuro tearing open his mask and growing larger than Kurukuru, then ripping off Kurukuru's face to leave a similar looking face, and the song ending with a focus on one of their torsos.
@EveExplained2 жыл бұрын
Hi! This is just one interpretation~ Fukuro is reflection of KuruKuru's emotions. So Furuko ripping his own mask and growing large represents the problem of KuruKuru's identity and growing larger. He rips KuruKuru's actual face since KuruKuru can never play the role of himself. KuruKuru puts on many masks or roles and it's fitting that he'd wear Fukuro's face at the end because both KuruKuru and Fukuro ripped their own identity and reflect each other.

@@arifrifai5201sorry to reply so late I just saw these comments 😅 I believe Fukuro is a reflection of Kurukuru's inner child. When he puts on that mask, he isn't putting on another meaningless mask like in the past. This time, he's wearing something that represents a part of him! If you check out Nonsense Literature, which is a song that's directly connected to this one, there is a line that says something like "All of you want to know me, and you all have your own opinions, but there is no real me." I like to think this line is directly connected to Dramaturgy and how he isn't his "real self" throughout most of the music video.

hello !! I was wondering do you think that there is a big takeaway the viewers can get from the music video or rather a message eve was trying to convey?
@EveExplained2 жыл бұрын
Hi! Dramaturgy is the concept of playing a role depending on the setting you're in. You're face with the feeling of never being this identity of what you think is you and thus you are forever stuck on stage performing around people. In the case of the main character I find that he never finds a setting where he can just do without the mask. In the case of Eve as the artist, he has always had things he could not express to anyone as himself. So he makes music and art to share those things without being explicit. He has made some kind of exit to his stage in a sense by being on a different one.
