The problem with Orvar is that it tempts the player into going the combo path with it... and as a result, the player tries to run both strategies and ends up failing at both.

This extends to the 99 as well. I put a lot of thought into which cards I run because players will make concrete, sometimes irrational decisions in their play patterns if they even get a whiff that a certain card is in my deck. "You must have Cyclonic Rift in your deck because it has blue," nope. But I will be honest if it instead has River's Rebuke. Not only is it way cheaper to buy, but it also adds a lot of theme/character to the deck if it has a merfolk, pirate, Ixalan, or some other kind of ocean/water style story.

My very favorite commander decks end up being interesting archetypes with interesting restrictions. Decks where you have to make interesting and weird choices, find cool cards. A lot of cards (commanders especially) that are “more powerful” often just remove restrictions or drawbacks, or do something obviously very strong.

That’s why it’s more fun to play stuff like prossh instead of the original korvold, it’s still got some of the power of the original but it’s still fun and you’re not an immediate threat.

Sometimes a lower power commander is also better because of that last bit...you won't have to waste as much mana recasting it or protecting it. Whether you play EDH for fun, to win, or both, is ultimately up to you, and what you do with that is important.

At least you can have an "hard mode" version of mistform with orvar since they play similar i usually go with fun jank over serious e.g. i have ixidor reality sculptor for morphs than using the more "effective cards"

This only true with casual players who have yet to improve their threat assessment about which card to remove and way more important when to remove it. I can tell you that the most boring commander games I've played are those where my opponents just stuffed cards with little to zero synergy together because "if it's too powerful, it's less fun". Absolutely not. It's less fun when your deck doens't work because your cards don't match or they are just bad or only working with a bunch of other bad cards.

its one of the things that makes mtga brawl so miserable and commander with the right groups so good. for most people, playing the weirder, funkier, and more interesting/sentimental cards is going to be more fun, and its amazing to play like that against people with that ethos that way. but to play brawl is to optimize and become vicious or be tortured into insanity, if you dont just quit.

I was very sad when I built Orvar Wizards and people were like "oh you're playing Orvar, I will be ending you first, I have had bad games against Orvar combo decks" and I was playing wizard tribal 🫠 sure I had 2, TWO, combos in the deck to get to an alternate wincon in case somebody had a billion health or whatever but that's standard for commander

Yeah but now with all these KZbinrs promoting Mistform Ultimus, it's going to become less unique and more people will know what people are using him to do, so then it'll eventually just lose its identity of being a sleeper commander :P
