I personally loved that Sorkin managed to leave us heartbroken by Desi rather than angry. He was a great man overall, and people are not their mistakes! But we do have to live with them.

The moment when Desi (as Ricky) said “Lucy, I’m home” and Lucille (as Lucy) froze, reflecting that that was what she ever wanted and the reason why she did the show, did it for me. It was something Lucille wanted in reality but could only achieve if she continue with the fictional TV world. Such great writing. Now I finally understood when Sorkin said that he wasn’t looking to make/remake a story about “I love Lucy/ Lucy Ricardo” but that of Lucille Ball & Desi Arnaz.

I adored "I Love Lucy" and grew up with the show in the 1950's. I assumed, as a kid, that the Ricardos were just Lucy and Desi being themselves, only on a set, lightly fictionalized and filmed. I was crushed when they got divorced. I was about 11 years old. I still want the dream of the happily married Ricardos. I didn't want to see this movie, "Being The Ricardos," because Nicole and Javier are both way too old to be playing these parts. At the time these real events were happening, Desi was about 38 and Lucy was 43. This scene here really moves me and makes me sad and yes, I can see them as these people, though I still have my issues with this casting.

Having watched a recent biography of the great and funny Lucille Ball - this drama is dire. Kidman cant move her face and Javier is huge in size and more ike a boxer than Desi. A good review quote: “Nicole Kidman was not a good choice for Lucy. She is a beautiful woman but she has made certain choices regarding her appearance, and those choices include the heavy use of Botox and fillers, which consequently results in a very limited range of expressions on her face. That is the exact OPPOSITE of what made Lucy special. Lucy was one of the most expressive actors on TV. She quite literally a flexible face and used those great expressions to make us laugh.” I totally agree with it.

@@cerdas1814 no Lucy wanted to divorce. It was the second time she filed since she caught him cheating in the 1940s. She did like not only his continued cheating, drinking coupled with his increasing violence. She even told the judge that her real life with Desi was the complete opposite of their idealized television life. Had he not descended u to drunken violence they might have stayed together but she could live with the adultery, drinking and violence.

@@3dartistguy If you read the books that they wrote and published it states that desi asked for the second divorce in 1960. Lucy filed it. And he had not gotten violently drunk. He was just completely distant from Lucy at this point. And he started drinking because he got more and more stressed out from all the work he had to do as a president. Yes the cheating was a huge factor in it, but in the end Desi recognized how much it was hurting her, but also realized that there was no return and if they walked away they might be better friends and better parents.

@@cerdas1814 I dobt know what books your reading that said he asked for divorce but books and documentaries I’ve read said Lucy pushed for divorce because again he had gotten violently drunk and continued with his adultery. Lucy reportedly told the judge her life with Desi was a nightmare. Yes the pressures bay have caused him driniking heavily and cheating on her but unlike Hillary Clinton, Lucy could not continue to be a fool of. Lucy later too over as president of Desilu and handled the pastures of running a studio just five h til she sold it in 1967 to Paramount pictures. Fiction always plays better than truth. And the truth is that no such phone call happened with Hoover in front of the audience. I've had a book for YEARS which explains, in detail, exactly what happened. They both knew they could lose their studio and were frightened. At first, after the accusation, Desi considered calling President Eisenhower but didn't really know him well enough and decided against it. So he called J. Edgar Hoover, who he knew rather well from the race track at Delmar. Desi asked if the FBI had anything at all on her and Hoover told him no; as far as the FBI was concerned, she was in the clear. Literally HOURS before the show, Lucy was cleared, I believe, by the House Un-American activities committee. So Desi DID speak to the studio audience about it. But what he REALLY said was that Lucille was "no communist." He said they both despised the communists and everything they stood for, that he was kicked out of Cuba because of communism and that they had both voted for Eisenhower. He said Lucy was 100% American. Lucy stood off set and cried. When he introduced Lucy, he said "I want you meet my favorite wife, my favorite redhead...in fact, that's the ONLY thing red about her!" The audience gave her a standing ovation.

And why Sorkin didn’t use Desi’s actual words and went with words that don’t pack the punch of the real life ones is just plain dumb.
@retroguy94942 жыл бұрын
@@bradleyscarton3931 Well, you and I agree on that one. But as I said, fiction plays better than truth. The dumb masses would be more entertained and thrilled with Hoover speaking on the phone through a microphone to the audience rather than Desi speaking to them, which he did before EVERY show during the warm up. This incident was VERY important in our history as it shows how just a few untrue words can destroy a beloved person. I think Sorkin should have paid it the respect it deserved by showing it exactly as it happened.
