This movie is pure magic - the best of the magic of movie making. The movie magic transcends the film, filling you with a sense of awe and wonder. Chance walking on water at the end is sublime. Steeped in irony, the ultimate irony is that the most mature, thoughtful and insightful person is also the most simplistic. Like an onion, this movie has endless layers - layers of depth & irony. One of the finest movies I've ever seen.😉 Greatest closing line in a movie ever: "Life, is a state of mind."

When I started filming "Being There" (age 9), I was too small and too cold. It was a historically cold day in D.C. Hal Ashby stopped the camera. A bunch of adults swarmed around me. My mother and the casting director came running over. He sent everyone away except for my mother and the extras casting director. He said, "I don't want to discourage Matthew from pursuing future acting work." So he placed me within the original mini-monologue near the basketball court scene. They cut Peter's lines but kept me in it.
