'Being There' is among my favourit films. The first time a watched it i was mesmerized to say the least. This film has touched me internally, it has made me think about life, people, the way we perceive the world around us. it also made me realize that, the world is not the way I see it as everyone has a different view of it. This film analysis has given me a deeper understanding of life and 'Being There" Great accomplishment from everyone involved.

This may actually be my favorite movie of all time. I now have a personal connection to it as one of my Grandfather's was named Chauncey. My son's name is Chance. Partly intentional, part serendipity. This to me is one of the greatest films ever made. Sellers should be given a posthumous Oscar for his performance, (which was the greatest of his career).

The Movie is of its time as well, back then this kinda thing was possible to perceive someone on face value and draw positive conclusions to fill the needed void of right place at the right time. Nowadays never possible. In the late 1980,s- early 90,s I found employment possibilities similar to this movie. It was a real treat to watch actually. The man’s name is Chauncey was a brilliant type of a sleeper character! The symbolism during Bens funeral was very spooky and gave us a glimpse into secret society

A large part of why this works so superbly is the genius of Peter Sellers. This was the last movie he ever made, and the only non comic part he ever played. I believe he knew he was near the end of his life when he played the part of Chance and this gives his performance an extraordinary depth and gravitas. He made a lot of great movies but this, as his old comrade Spike Milligan said, this was the best thing he ever did.

powerful presentation. Thank you. It makes me think back to the first time I watched this movie. I was pissed. No Clint Eastwood, No Pink Panther, No Action. Back then I was completely in the frame of mind of watching and living life vicariously by what I was viewing. I was awakened at about 37 YOA, and my life has been a conquest of trying to understand the dissonance between perception and reality. When I initially saw the movie the walking on water depiction became etched in my mind. Unforgettable imagery with profound impact.

This analysis of social psychology is truly eye-opening for me. From watching 'Being There' for the first time, I was immersed in the symbols of the external world and interpreted this film to be a comedy drama. I realize now what it symbolizes and has actually changed my perception of the material world. The words we use and feelings we express are merely interpretations of symbols. We interpret these symbols in a manner that is conducive to our influences? This explains our human behaviour. If we follow esoteric knowledge and practice mindfulness meditation strictly, logically there cannot be emotions of anger, sorrow, depression, anxiety, annoyance etc. because the symbols that we interpret are merely manifestations of a collection of other interpretations. The true reality therefore lies within our inner conscience which is difficult to fully realize.

@Rafael Nunes Duarte Thank you very much for your insight. I agree that we cannot disregard our emotions - even if we make ourselves aware that the situation or symbol we're experiencing is only an interpretation. The human body is sensory and the brain picks up its own version of external stimuli automatically but the theory of this analysis of 'Being There' is logical from a purely scientific point of view. If our conscience is immersed in the esoteric and not the exoteric world, it follows that there cannot be any emotions. By default, we are all blank-minded like Chauncey Gardiner however as our life progresses, more impressions accumulate in our conscience thereby giving us a self-image. This self-image or ego doesn't exist in the material sense as it's only an idea in our head. Nonetheless without it, how can we relate and transact with our environment? Because we believe and assume this self-image to be our identity, we will naturally feel insulted, embarrassed, humiliated, ashamed or even complimented and perhaps grandiose. It's impossible for our inner conscience to be fully immersed in esoterism therefore like you've pointed out, we simply have to be aware of our feelings and not judge them in light of Buddha's philosophy.
@robertcrosbie6208
@robertcrosbie6208 3 жыл бұрын
@Rafael Nunes Duarte Yes precisely. Chance's conscience is immersed in the esoteric world whereas the other characters (and the audience watching the film) observe him through an exoteric lens. From the exoteric standpoint, we perceive Chance as this idiot (certainly as Louise the maid knows lol) and the other upper-class characters perceive him to be someone important as explained in this video. However if we watch the film through an esoteric lens (from Chance's standpoint), the normal every-day person appears to be unnecessarily complicated and judgmental. Because Chance has no self-image, he remains unaffected by what happens in his environment therefore he can adapt accordingly.

Great comments. You're correct in saying that the film plays out as a satire on American life in all the ways you describe. Which it is...However, the intent here was to focus in on the esoteric meanings that are present underneath the satirical exterior. This is a very deep film that operates on many different levels. This is what makes it so great and worthy of multiple viewings. Thanks for watching!

Chance was a gardener that took very good care of the garden, but was not allowed to leave the confines of the home. When leaving the home, the camera showed a small fenced lawn that was unkemped and full of trash. Meaning to me is unclear, other than the outside world was forbidden, other than through the lens of a TV screen.

One of the most beautiful films ever made quite honestly. At first watch, I had thought the message portrayed was just "Be kind. sincerely kind, and the universe will always take care of you" but the Kubrick'ian tongue in cheekness is rife throughout, which leads me to ask how such a movie even saw the light of day. Pre-internet, I suppose the wizards behind the curtain figured it would all go straight over our heads.

I was so touched by this film that it affected me deeply and continues to do the same 40 years later. I was first touched by its true genius but as I grow wiser I note that it even transcends genius. I am a brilliant man but require complex mathematical formulas and complexly structured sentences to express my understanding of MY reality. I think that the 13 minutes spent here did a great job, but one could discuss the different layers of this masterpiece et ex fine. I think the genius of Chance is in fact his simplistic clarity of thought. His genius transcends IQ since his messages can be accepted by all types of intellect and transcends observer bias. I could develop a complex economic model using Laplace and a Colleague did just that using Fourier to predict economic micro-trends for a major bank. But Chances simplistic understanding of the cycle of life in his garden is easily understood by all and I could never develop a control system model with such insight. I also spent several years composing a mathematical underlay to resolve some shortcomings of Einsteins SRT. I was so "PROUD" of myself when I successfully completed a photonics experiment to validate my model and the hundreds of pages of math I had developed. During a fateful Friday afternoon phone call, my mentor and best professor from University made the statement "If there is a God, God is Math." In an attempt to parody this statement I read the Hebrew version of Genesis and quickly realized it was a metric space. (that is a math space that explains things) and my hundreds of pages of math could be summarized with a math statement that simplistically stated was "LET there be light" . This math let statement merges science and consciousness. The fact that some Sheppard figured it out 4000 years ago without the high level math I had mastered to accomplish this, humbled and prophetically affected me. Whether you think Jesus was the son of God or just a wise man, the parallels in this movie can not be over looked. Only when we realize the limits of OUR intellect, will we truly be able to understand, since seeing requires an open mind as well as an open eye. This masterpiece gave me the ability to gain that insight and that is why i feel it is the best movie of all time. The true measure of a masterpiece is its ability to touch our soul. The fact that the author of this review chose to be safe in his critique , would cause me to grade this at a B+ to A-. Sorry occupational hazard. lol But nonetheless it was very well done. A brilliant but safe review.. lol

Not sure if Ashby was homaging Kubrick, or if Kubrick was involved, but there are some very interesting shots and connections. One shot that I've noticed, that hasn't been mentioned in other videos is the bedroom scene when the wife is talking with Chance, she does a shoulder shrug with a cheeky grin on her face. This shot mirrors the one in Eyes Wide Shut, when militiches daughter slyly backs away from Tom Cruise. Her expression is exactly the same.

The concept of blank slates up for politicians, which is what they talk about at the end, is a very real strategy. "Hope and Change" never said "hope for what" or "change to what", it was all left to the listener to fill in their own answer, and hopefully vote for the dude gobbling up all your imagination points. I rather see this movie as an example of Christian existentialism. Chance is a type of heavenly creature, child-like in his simplicity and naivety, visiting earth and very interested in what he sees and hears here. Being a type of angel or saint he has a profound effect on those who get to know him. He is Christianity's "Perfect Man", the Christian ideal of how man should be.

Chauncey is the owner of a great magic trick. Except, he doesn't know it. It's what makes the movie and character so endearing. Chauncey is self-possessed... Jcrashinthecar, I don't think we (as a general population) share a consensus on what words mean. Perhaps the definition, but not what words imply. Sarcasm and subtext play a role, but past experiences can color a word or phrase negatively or positively. Each character could see what they wanted to see in Chance. They would assume his words were an allegory that described his or her answer that they had already concluded, but Chance's words confirmed. Like you said, creating their own reality.

Hmm. Interesting choice. Another outstanding picture. I just may have to put something together on it. It would almost have to be a full-blown analysis, though, like this one, because of its depth. I love that film!

So, in reading some of the comments below I see that most people got the point and a few obviously did not hence their comments about Presidents Trump and Obama which proves the narrator's point exactly. Very good analysis on an excellent movie.

Interesting analysis actually , especially when talking about the pyramid even if i have some deeper thoughts about it. but what's confusing is the absence of mentioning the (enlightenment symbols) on the original novel...

Poster of movie is amalgamation of Rene Margret surrealist painter The Son of Man and after rain paintings. Word amalgamation cane from alchemy. Freudian ideas of esoteric knowledge became 70 trillion dollar industry of ads, political campaigns, engineering of consent in nephew Edwards Barney hands.

Video made in 2012, me watching in 2021, besides the anagram, my how times have changed. Your intro speaks of how we as a culture share a consensus on what words mean. Yeah, that went belly up in 2014-2015. Now we don't even agree on what pronouns are or how many genders there are, and that's only the top snow flake of the iceberg. Maybe we did use words that way in 2012, but that time is as dead as the old man and Ben both! As for the rest of the analysis, well, there were a lot of words in it. Yes, I think there were. You promised esoteric, and one might say you delivered. But it's also worth pondering if such ponderings as this in 2012 wasn't part of the axe to society that broke our "cultural consensus on what words mean" a mere 2 years later.

Wonderful review to a wonderful movie. Being There is one of those movies that goes out of its way to be just ambiguous enough to warrant discussion and different interpretations. Despite having a fairly straightforward central narrative, there is a whole other level to this movie you've tapped into that leaves it as open to interpretation as Eraserhead or Un Chien Andalou. It's a movie, movies are not reality. Maybe he really is walking on the water at the end. :)

Nice analysis. But i'd disagree with your assessment of 'reality.' there are no false realities or real realities. Reality is what you perceive, or as Picasso would say, 'anything you can imagine is real.'

This film is a comedy based on a Jerzy Kosinski novel. Hal Ashby would be amused by how much Jcrash is reading into it.

@@Jcrashinthecar Lots of people read all kinds of things into song lyrics, poems, paintings, films, I'm not knocking it. Ashby did a great deal of preparation on his films, but he wasn't the sort of cat that would get into discussions about symbolism and esoteric paradigms, tho he wouldn't be disdainful of such discussions, he'd be amused. I enjoyed your video. CHEERS
