My tactic is to exaggerate, in a bombastic and exaggerated fashion, in the following way: "Oh my God! That's exactly right, boy you hit the nail right on the head, no doubt about it! It's like you're in my head or something! I mean WOW! You even got all the punctuation down with your inflection, and I have to hand it to you, wow, yup exactly down to the last molecule, a precise word for word rendition of not only what I said but what I meant by it, which by the way is exactly what I said. " Then I sit back beaming smugly at them because I called them a liar in a very sarcastic way. Nobody wants to argue with me anymore after that. Nasty, I know, but it has been several years since I realized there is no way to convert a fanatic so the best you can do is cut the interaction to a minimum and hope they die soon.

Yes, slowing down the tempo vs. the aggressor's rapid pace works beautifully. Tip # 2 You don't have to answer every question. A stare down with an aggressor makes you supremely powerful. Watch them squirm. People HATE silence. Tip # 3 Say "We're done here".. and walk away.

It really gives you the upper hand if you are laid back and patient when the other person is attacking you. It wrong foots them because they wanted to make you angry and it doesn't work. I had a boss do that when I was representing another worker's interest. I just sat back patiently and let him vent his anger until he ran out of steam. Then I calmly asked him if we could discuss the subject now he had got that off his chest. Needless to say I walked out of that room with everything I went in there to get, and the worker was delighted that I had won for him. If you lose your rag, you are going to lose the argument, and that boss knew that. So did Cathy Newman. If Jordan had lost his rag at any moment she would have made mincemeat out of him.

This was in college, and the professor for that class had actually gone to the effort to get them to explain to each other clearly exactly what they were saying. Too bad the girl went and spread bull about her behind her back a day later in another class, all because she was an insecure piece of work (I pity her boyfriend, though). I really hate when people pull stuff like this because they're essentially putting words in your mouth that you didn't say just to get under your skin. It's one of the reasons *why* I absolutely dislike arguing with people, especially if they're never going to admit that they're the ones who are full of it.

@Bill Carson Saying everyone In the context I used it is referring to everyone who actually has done something which is not a generalisation. Not only can we stop generalising by simply! acknowledging not everything is so clack and white and using language to reflect that such as those/some/ most etc but even when this is not an option it is no justification for the use of extremely ridiculous, absurd not to mention highly judgmental not to mention wrong sweeping generalisations such as you saying all members of the left lack any principles! As for the political spectrum its complicated and their are no easy answers but I do know the extremes of both are bad also one party states have definitely been shown to be bad. / you can never entirely get rid of the concept of government force to handle necessary situations Ie you are forced to fund the military. police, fire services I mean things are sometimes needed for society to function its just about how much but stop acting like its just a concept that only will even exist with the left. also major concept of conservatives is that tradition trumps everything and that's a problem for me because traditionally slavery was ok/ the US was ruled by England etc tradition isn't good just by its nature, you have to judge individual things on its merit but people won't do that because their too busy picking sides.

@jeffcourty63212 күн бұрын
One powerful move to turn an opposant into a neutral position is to help him when he is stunned, such as in the ''gotcha'' moment. You can propose a ''lighter version'' of his argument in a question form to help him get back on track. Like: ''Well, by that, did you meant [her argument, remodeled] ?''. It will give that person some space to recompose himself and realign his position without you even agreeing. Then his choice would be to continue in that way or refute it. Voluntarily giving ammo to your adversary earn you some respect and can drastically change the tone of the debate from opposants who want victory to mutual contributors who search truth from different perspectives. Whatever the outcome, he will now be less inclined to make aggressive assumptions. Beneficials debates are not the result of persuasion but mutual understanding, given both parties are reasonable.

What an interesting presentation. Mr. Peterson is someone who deserves to be listened to. He is usually interesting but will often stray from what could actually be a straight answer. No harm no foul. A direct approach as a response will often lead to a mid point where both can come away with something that they both can live with; even if it may appear as a truce. He is a sensitive and easily offended person. He often becomes defensive where no offense is worth noting. Generally the best approach here is to back away and search for an answer that brings you onto a common ground. When someone is clearly offended by an answer, they would be better served by disengaging from any opposition. Better to change the direction of the conversation where your response will deflect the point of view of the questioner rather than starting a debate with them. Once the discussion has turned that way, there will be nothing gained by continuing. Before continuing as before, one might profit greatly by stepping back and observing where things may have gone wrong. The quickest way to evaluate the situation might be to search for another approach while remembering the Teaching of Sun Tzu. When caught in a standoff it may be best to withdraw from the situation and wait for the tide to change.

Do not share your opinion. At all. Found Mr. Peterson a powerhouse. Her a shameless bullying teenager. Mr. Peterson handled this conversation like a pro. Like the best pro. If he would be so easily offended, this conversation would have gotten out of hand totally, since she was only there to offend. So no, your thoughts are not a reflection of what actually happened here. Seems that 'Sun Tzu' teaching is not the best. You didn't learn.

@Marcos 989 OK, let me just clarify, cathy Newman in my opinion is a fantastic journalist and a brilliant anchor. I've admired much of her work . Incredibly thorough, she really does her homework if I was a guest on the show, particularly a controversial guest, make no mistake I'd be shaking in my shoes. However in this particular interview she failed, I don't know what happened , I don't know. Let's just say I hope she learned from this experience. We all have our fine moments and our regrettable moments and this was one of hers. I'll end this by saying Cathy is still one of my favourite journalists she's also fair and tries to see both sides of an argument not all journalists do. I hope this clarifies my point of view

I remember something like this happening to me back in college. I was eating lunch with some of my fellow math tutors when I made an off-hand remark that had something to do with women's brains having larger language processing centers than men's. Immediately after saying that, the girl sitting next to me (also a math tutor) barked at me, "there's no evidence that men are better at math than women!" Caught off guard, my mind raced to come up with a counter argument. After a second of contemplation, it dawned on me that I didn't actually believe men were inherently better at math and never said anything to that effect. I slowly turned to look at her and calmly asked, "when did I say anything about math?" She immediately backed off, finished her meal in silence, and left about five minutes later. And GOSH DARN did it ever feel good! Oh yeah, and don't lose your cool or whatever...
@yungturtle70336 жыл бұрын
"Oh yeah, and don't lose your cool or whatever..." That is kind of the basis to begin with. Watching this conversation progress actualy hilighted to me that I already do effectively recognise and confront these pitfalls and traps in everyday conversation without having to intentionally watch out for them as such .which comes naturaly if you really are listening to what others say to you and consider being precise about your wording before you speak .i think that it follows that if you practise trying to convey to people in conversation exactly what you mean then you do also look carefully at their wording to ascertain its validity in the context that they're being applied. The ones that you should walk away from and disregard are those who have to be right now matter the level of denial that they have to embed themselves in to do it .I know one person at least ,an older guy i work with who is so set in his own ways that he reacts defensively, to even rather shallow depth that I present in my points of view. That ."So your saying phrase "! Coupled with a strongly dismissive attitude. But it isn't about what I'm saying at all ,and is really about him choosing not to listen properly because he cannot cope with the complication of details .being drawn into discussing details that butt up against his frustration and impatience seem to be the true cause of the issue .
