That thing looks really good! But I was surprised how well it cleaned! We never got the dc01 over here.

They get an undeserved reputation in the uk. They don't age well, their not brilliant inside so they clag up. This is how people remember them, they are pretty awesome when reset to new!

I still think the original dual cyclone was the best cyclonic system Dyson made, it's a really simple design and it's very effective. Just shows that the DC01's where built to last doesn't it? And as you said they do need refurbishment every so often, but if a vacuum lasts 20 or more years with care and just some replacement parts, it's done incredibly well.

Sounds like the ametek motor Sam? Got that slightly different sound to it than the ydk

what exactly is the purpose of the donut? I live in the US and none of our vacuums have that

Interesting video. I have recently been given a Dyson DC01 which does pick up with both the hose and when in "upright" mode - however, I noticed that when in upright mode very little fluff and dirt seemed to be going into the dust collector. When I use the hose it picks it up AND I see it go into the dust collector. When I use the upright, it appears to pick it up BUT very little goes into the dust collector and then when I switch the motor off, it spews out fluff and dust where it stands. Seems to me like there is some sort of blockage when in upright mode but I can't see anything. It's got brand new filters in - both the one under the dust collector/container and also the one which goes into the plastic cage to the right hand side in an upright position. Any ideas?

They never did pick up much fluff tbh. If you vacuum up some small stones or bits of paper do they make it to the bin? Otherwise the suction duct runs through the chassis and has a friction fit seal where it meets the head. Take the base plate off and see if there's a clog I guess

@@beko1987 Thanks. Yes, if I vacuum up some small grit or tiny bits of coloured wool with the hose then they do make it into the bin. Not always the case when cleaner is in upright mode. They disappear off the carpet, maybe a small amount makes it into the bin, then the rest gets spat out under the cleaner the second you power it off. I have checked both the inspection chambers at the bottom and have put a long, flexible, fluffy radiator brush up both the inspection chambers - one going up into the hose and the other going up into the chassis of the cleaner - quite expected to pull the brush out with a load of fluff on it but it came out clean as a whistle each time. I'll have a fiddle tomorrow and see if I can figure out how to take the base plate off. Thanks for the guidance!

Not bad at all. Is there anyway to get a new motor for a DC01 if it had went?

You'll struggle to find a brand new one, but plenty of used ones, usually for 99p with a battered ruined Dyson attached!

It's not the original DC01 because that came out in 1993, whereas this later revision of it came out in 1996.

The DA001 came out in 1993, the DC01 MK1 came out in 1994/1995, MK2 from 1996 with a later revision (MK3) around 1998 which is the one in the video. No matter the revision, it's still known as the first Dyson.

Pros of dc01 motor is amatek or ykd japan amatek was used on late models will outlast any dyson uprate model to today strong handle cons filters are not freeflowing for max suction wheels can get lose when old air channel from brush bar need cleaning sometimes due to blockage dyson dco4 dco7 dc14 models dont last long due to small over powered motor which overheats and burns out due to no air cooling and bearings etc

Would have been a DA001 maybe, or a 1st gen dc01 which used the old font for a spell before changing. Da001 has better build quality and a couple of differences but their basically interchangeable
