"The worried songbird cries out in the forest, Her thoughts go far away, For those of us without fathers, Her thoughts.... go out to them" Wow! The metaphor is awesome. But surely Oumou Sangare herself embodies the worried songbird in the forest, crying out for those children growing up without a father as she had to do. Her voice is haunting, and she is so inspiring isn't she? Bravo and thanks to both of these excellent performers.

This song is a number 1 . It should be on radios everywhere. You don't need to understand the lyrics you can hear the beauty in her wonderful voice . Bella fleck is one of the best musicians ever. This song soothes me and inspires me every time . Love it

This is one of my favorite all time songs… it’s just perfect. And she sings it not just from her heart but from all our hearts. It is from heaven.

One of the most beautiful and perhaps the saddest song I have ever heard. Thanks to nature, God, whatever for Oumou Sangare and to Bela Fleck for going there and giving us this wonderful, shining, precious gem of music. It has brought me to tears many times. The banjo played softly and sadly is a revelation. Oumou, Bela, I love you both for this heartfelt gift.

I will admit… I took a hit of LSD and watched this documentary and this song cracked me open and spilled me everywhere. I broke down crying over this one.

I have watched/listened to this performance an enormous number of times. It is the most beautiful piece of music I have experienced. It is unusual for Bela Fleck to play so restrained, but it brings out his total mastery of the banjo. There may be a human voice more thrilling than Oumou Sangare's, but I have never heard it.

This is one of the most amazing musical performances i have had the pleasure to witness in this life. i really appreciate bela's understated performance, very skilled but allowing Oumou to shine. And shine she does. Her voice is other worldly, as in not from this world. Too beautiful to be from this world. And yet it also encompasses the pain of the human experience. What we are witnessing here is a blending of beauty, pain, and extraordinary human talent.

84 comments! I was born in 84! Anyway, this song will always have a place in my heart. I can't help but think of my Mother, Valerie Curry, who passed at the too early age of 51 🙏🏾 This song reminds me of all the times you reminded me of just how much I loved her, and still do. This is literally one of the most beautiful pieces I've ever heard in my entire life 😭 Many blessings to everyone out there, and their loved ones 🙏🏾🙇🏾♂️🎶💜

I want to remind myself that I first heard this song whilst listening back to Guy Garvey's 6 Music radio today, the day I found out my father in law peacefully died in his sleep last night. It was a soothing, mesmerising song to get lost in. Loving the banjo perfectly complementing her beautiful mournful vocal. Makes me want to find out more about the film this is from.

Doesn't this make you wonder how humans ever can be compared to animals? Do you ever see an animal sing with such heart and soul as this? There's so much more to people than just atoms. Something special and unique. Could it be that it is the visage of God's own image which He Himself poured into man so many ages ago?

Have you ever actually stopped and listened to birds with your heart? The songs we sing come from them, stories sang by animals to those who have the heart to listen. The bluewhales have a song of generations, and each generation adds a part to it. It's very long song, and we can't hear it without the aid of electronics. So yeah, all beings are able to express and create, just a matter of receiving imho.
