A clip of the great documentary "Throw down your heart" while Béla plays banjo with that woman Ruth, thumb piano player.
At Jinja (Uganda).
I don't own the copyright but I post it for informational use, as I think it's beautiful to see.

"Now I don't fear again" What is amazing to me is that this woman I will never meet said these words into a camera, hundreds of miles away, and here, now, I can hear them and be comforted by them, and she will maybe never know.

This is the musical essence of pure Africa, unspoilt rhythms and a raw earthy mix of harmony - wish i was there to hear it live! Bela not bad as an accompaniment but there were a few times when I thought he was just a bit over the top.

A truly wonderful film. It is just brilliant. If you have the opportunity to see it, do so. You will find it time well spent. You may even be able to purchase the CD at this late date. Money well spent. I saw Bela in Vancouver at the Chan Center and I was stunned by his virtuosity. I come back to this clip every now and again just to remind myself that there is indeed harmony on this planet.

One thing I note is that the banjo does derive eventually from the exact kind of harp they show here, if I remember right.

George Parkins The banjo is actually an African instrument, if you watch later in the documentary there are some stringed instruments used by another group (I think in Mali) that could be early versions of a banjo
@georgeparkins777
@georgeparkins777 9 жыл бұрын
That's what I was getting at, yes. I always heard that the banjo derived from the Kora, but it could have been a discredited theory. At any rate, it would be more correct to say that the banjo is an African-American instrument.
@mattw4065
@mattw4065 9 жыл бұрын
George Parkins If I remember correctly, that's the reason that Bela decided to make this album/documentary - he wanted to record African music and banjo playing together since the banjo comes from Africa. I don't know which instrument specifically is its predecessor but it's definitely an African instrument, you're right about that.
