Brad, I think your other video with Jimmy Gaudreau says it all about Tony's approach. In that video, Jimmy quotes Tony as saying "I want your breaks to be spontaneous. I don't want you putting a lot of forethought into this stuff." Also, these words from Tony really help to show what he thought: You don't have to talk to them day and night about how to do this and how to do that. You just pick the right guy, he shows up, walks on the stage, knows what he's doin'. A good example is The Unit played a really good gig at the Merlefest one year and I didn't have a fiddle player. Well, one minute before we were to be called to go on stage, Stuart Duncan was standin' there and I reached in my pocket and I pulled out a hundred dollar bill, and I put it in Stuart's shirt pocket. I said, "Stuart, what are you doin' for the next hour?" He said, "I ain't doin' nothin'." I stuck the hundred dollar bill in his pocket and I just said "go get your fiddle real quick." He went and got it and he walked on stage and played with that band like he had been a member of that band for twenty years. That's the way I like doing it. That's from the video "As Tony Sees It - A Conversation with Tony RIce" (Jan Johansson)

Great album, I wore the record white learning the tracks but also what impressed me was the brilliance of the musicians on that album. Bela didn't hog the show and never has, he likes to let his fellow musicians be creative too, Tony was incredible and I met him in 1988 and he was friendly and helpful. The 'Drive' album was something special and still is. Thanks for the insight Brad.

I love that album! Back in the day, I left it in the CD player in my car for 2 years, I couldn't get tired of it. I still listen to it and it's just as good now as it was the day I bought it.

I totally understand. I'm the same way. Had it for 35 years now and it still isn't old to me, and I always hear something here and there that I missed before.

I can see why. Drive is one of if not the best acoustic instrumental recordings of all time.

This came out when I was still in my student days, and moving from house to house a lot. The first thing I'd do when I got to a new place and set up my playback system (I had quality equipment in those days) was to put this one on. I'm not a musician, but I'm always nearly struck dumb by the way "Sanctuary" curls around chord progressions I can't identify. It's a cosmic mystery to me. Later, I was able to get a copy of the SACD, but I never had a player for it; mainly it's a collectible, but it does have those 2 extra tracks. Thanks for presenting this.

Bela is the GOAT. It is hard to imagine anyone ever being as good as he is. Sam and Tony are also on my list of the best ever. I also love Bela's album Deviation

I think you are correction in your opinion that this is truly one of the greatest instrumental by albums ever recorded. It was released on a stereo SACD but I was unaware of it's release. I still looking for aa reasonably priced copy. Just found your channel and subscribed.
