Wyatt Rice extended interview - Church Street Blues 40th anniversary (audio only)

This interview is an extended version of the one that appeared in the first part of the Tony Rice Church Street Blues 40th anniversary celebration.
I talked to Wyatt for almost an hour and we covered some areas that weren't directly related to the Church Street Blues episode, but are fascinating as an insight into where Tony was around the time the album was recorded. Wyatt also shared some of his favourite memories of hanging out with Tony and making music together in the early 1980s, so I wanted to share the rest of it.
This is the first interview about Tony Wyatt has given since he passed. It was incredibly special to get to have this conversation and my thanks go to Wyatt for his generosity and warmth. I hope you enjoy this!

I went to the Paramount in Bristol to see Tony. I bragged all I could to him. Tony said, if you wanna meet a real guitar player, my brother is right over there. Every time I talk to Tony, he was a awesome gentleman. Im glad this interview is in existence.

I played the “bone” backstage after a show. Proudest moment of my life. Tony got up off the couch and came over. “Damn son you pull some tone out of that old rag. You trying to put me out of a job?” All the weekends in my bedroom with my guitar and a bootleg tape of TR. lifetime of memories thanks to him!

Thanks so much for an interview with Wyatt, so appropriate, and timely. I remember shows at the Birchmere in the Eighties. After show, go visit Tony and Wyatt in the back room, (where, by the way, Tony would invite me to play the antique), Wyatt's young family was sometimes there. Tony knew me because I was a regular "wanna be". Tony and Wyatt were always so friendly and gracious. Of course, this down home humility and availability was always typical of professional bluegrass players. It's one of the things that contributes to the great beauty of our music. No snotty gatekeeping going on here! American commercial music is either mentally ill in itself, or will lead a person to such a condition. I remember Tony, when asked, would swear he gave Wyatt no lessons. Now, I finally really believe him!

Wyatt is a hoss on rhythm! He is the closest to TR’s tone as you’ll hear. Great interview and obviously great memories for Wyatt. Where does time go?

P.S., At one point in the interview Wyatt meentions that Tony took him to see The Osbourne Brothers. Sonny had several "candid" photos of Tony that were quite funny. Sonny was actually close with Tony, fyi.

Thank you! The truth is I just email or message people I want to talk to and interview the ones who say yes! It does help sometimes if I'm talking about someone else - I think I only got Alison Krauss to agree because I was talking about Tony Rice and she loves Tony!
