Despite her service to US airmen - Mrs. Brusselmans was denied US citizenship until after a heart attack in 1986 which got her publicity. She had lived in Canada which gave her immediate residency in gratitude for Canadian fliers that she saved. For several years New York U.S. Rep. Mario Biaggi and World War II veterans tried to persuade Congress to make Mrs. Brusselmans a permanent U.S. resident. This valiant woman passed away in 1993.

For her and her husband's bravery, Mrs. Anne Brusselmans was awarded the Member Of The British Empire by a grateful British Government. It was quite unusual for that award to be bestowed upon a citizen of a non-British Empire, or Commonwealth, country. She received The Medal Of Freedom with Silver Palm from General of the Army, Dwight D. Eisenhower, being one of only fourteen Europeans given the medal during the entire Second World War. Anne ALSO was awarded the Polish Medal of Resistance, the Order of Leopold II, and the Belgian Croix de Guerre. In the 1980's, Anne wanted to move to the the United States, to be near relatives during her last years. Her request was denied, for 5 years, as none of her relatives were then American citizens. President Reagan was somehow informed of her situation, and what she had done. He immediately signed an order granting Anne permanent U.S. residency rights. Reagan also phoned Anne to inform her of his actions, and to thank for her outstanding bravery. She was moved to tears by his call.

​@@sjoormen1 - I don't see that her husband got the awards. Only Anne. Perhaps because she did almost all the work, and took far greater risks, while her husband was out working. She was fluent in English, which meant she was the only person talking with the persons involved. Should Anne have been betrayed or captured, though, no doubt her husband would have suffered the same punishments as herself.

The American flag is a piece of cloth. Freedom is an important concept, though I'm not sure it's epitomized in America in recent history.

Absolutely fascinating, she and others like her should have been awarded the Victoria Cross, Congressional Medal of Honor, Legion of Honour and every other military medal, not these civilian awards, what they did was military based. I hope she was commemorated in her own country by a statue
