2 pairs of brothers married each other's sisters (I've Got a Secret 12/16/59)

Brothers George and Edward Pupp, brothers Aloysius (a-LOY-shus) and Joseph Geiger, all from Wisconsin: "We married their sisters." The wives (Agnes and Ethel Pupp and Catherine and Margaret Geiger) appear and the panel try to guess who is married to whom.

This is my family. My grandfather was one of George and Edward's brothers. There were 13 (I think) children in that family and my grandfather was the youngest of the bunch. Aunt Agnes died just a few months ago at the age of 96. Joe & Catherine have been gone for at least ten years now, I think. I don't remember Uncle George, but I do remember Aunt Ethel and Uncle Edward. It's always fun to try and explain how this works out to friends because it sounds crazy, but it's a true story.

Those children were likely the grandparents/great-grandparents of the folks commenting here. You folks act like it is a personal affront to you that more than one person is claiming a personal relationship. Get over yourselves.

I saw a glimpse of this and momentarily thought it was my parents who married in 1959. Then, I realized there were two too many brothers! My mother's sister married my father's brother and they are still alive today except my Dad who died a year ago. We always thought our situation was unique and had a hard time making others understand the relationships, but your family is truly special! Also, to this day, I look more like my cousin's twin sister than I do my own sister and we are all in our late 50's, early 60's now!

@@terrig7006 My dad had a brother and sister who marred a sister and brother. Which made my two aunts each other's married name was their maiden name. My sister's best friend from childhood, her husband's sister was marred to her brother, they had a double wedding but how they met was her older sister was married to her husbands cousin. At her sister's wedding a few years before, they met their mates as they were all in the wedding party.

There was one more Pupp-Geiger marriage but Mrs William Pupp née Elsie Geiger died in 1953 aged 44.

Lol we found that out with one set of my cousins. My dad's sister. Her husband was my my mom's third cousin. So we are 1st cousins and 4th cousins. We found that out after all of them were dead doing genealogy on ancestry. Lol mom used to say she wondered if they could be related as my paternal aunt's married name was my maternal grandmother's maiden name. What made this such a big surprise was my mom's family was from Wyoming and my dad's form Mississippi. However, with a little research we discovered our common ancestor through my mom migrated to New York from Ontario. He had several children but 2 of his sons left New York. One went to Missouri and his son to Wyoming, the other moved to South Carolina and then his son moved to Mississippi. Oh and one cousin and I share 1325 centimorgans so almost enough to be half siblings but she shares normal 1st. cousin amounts with my sisters. (around 800 centimorgans with one and around 900 centimorgans with the other.)

My grandmother and grandfather had the same circumstances. Two Meyer boys married two Settje girls, and two Settje boys married two Meyer girls. All the Meyers were siblings. All the Settjes were siblings

My father married my mother and his brother married her sister. Mom had me and my aunt and uncle had a son who genetically shows as my brother on ancestry. My aunt and uncle divorced and so did my parents. Aunt married a man, had a daughter and divorced. 15 years later my mom married the same man and had a daughter. So my male double cousin shows as my brother genetically. My female cousin is my step-sister and my 1/2 sister is also my cousin.

I met my best friend when I was really young, our parents were good friends. We always knew her moms mom had the same last name as me and my family and we always joked we were cousins. Well about ten years ago, we started doing genealogy research on our families and one night while we were up late sifting through census records and birth certificates we notice that 6 generations back, our grandfather's had the same last name...and realized they were brothers. And then we looked at their wives...and found out that they were sisters! So we are double related first cousins 6 times removed! And when we saw it, it just made so much sense because we were like two peas in a pod lol

At first I thought that each of their 31 children could say "I am my own cousin" but it's not quite as close as that. More accurate: "If you add up my siblings and my double cousins, the total is 30." My mother had a double cousin, because her mother and aunt, two Smith sisters, married two Davis brothers. But the Davis boys didn't have any sisters, so it couldn't get as complex as this set of contestants.

Their children would be called “double cousins. Because of familiar relationship their children are “double cousins” and would show up on a DNA profile as closer to being siblings than cousins If they were twins marrying twins their children while being cousins WOULD show up as siblings in a DNA profiles

Why is it most of these episodes feature some weird or unusual family situation? It’s interesting at first, but gets old after a while. Not only that, but the panel gets pretty good at figuring out what flavor of weirdness they’re up against. No more challenge.

Regarding the comments above- I’m in no way excusing the complete lack of diversity. Just remember that many southern states still had very strict segregation laws at this time. The first interracial TV kiss (in the US) was in 1968. Again, this doesn’t make it ok in any way. However, times change. People learn and (we hope) evolve. I wish more quickly, but sometimes you have to move back to go forward apparently. I’m in my early 40s and I’m super happy to see such a wide array of representation as compared to my childhood in the 80’s which was 95% white & 99% straight. If old entertainment like this game show shows us anything it’s that we’re getting there, even if it’s not at the pace we personally think it should be.
