hi q8, I am a CFI for rotorcraft so I can give you and your viewers some insight on how these birds really fly vs. how they fly in xplane. the flight model for the 407 is actually much better than say the schwitzer 300 or r-22 in xplane 11, however they are still a bit unstable versus how a real helicopter flies. first off, there is WAY too much "pendulum motion" in these flight models. all the helo's swing too much front to back and side to side when using cyclic inputs. I guess xplane is trying to replicate the inherent instability that goes with helicopter flying, however it is too exaggerated. you put in just a little cyclic input and these birds just start moving wildly in that direction. real helo's don't move nearly that much with small inputs which is what you want to do when flying helicopters. also, the anti-torque or what you refer to as "rudder" inputs are inaccurate as well. there is a really bad "rubber banding" motion in the yaw of these flight models which again real helo's don't do with pedal input. Again, the 407 flies much better than the two smaller helicopters mentioned above so I would recommend that people interested in helicopter flight in xplane start with the 407. hope this helps!

I found if you turn on the SAS it does make the helicopter a lot more stable. This is my favorite helicopter across any sim platform I have flown. (I started with Microsoft Flight simulator when the planes were wire frame models and scenery was just, green for ground, dark blue for water, light blue for sky.

I started with the AS 350B3, and I was near to suicide... was really frustating... then after some modities went a little bit better. Now I'm with the 407, and seems quite different.
@ledfarmer80697 жыл бұрын
I can point out some things for you. 1. The pedals control the tail rotor pitch to offset changes in main rotor torque. The 407 does not have a rudder. 2. In forward flight, if the collective remains stationary, the T/R pedals remain stationary, even in turns. Airplanes need rudder pedal inputs when making turns, helicopters don't. 3. The throttle stays in idle until you are ready to fly. Does your manual say to go out of idle to "25%" throttle setting and let it ground run just under 100% NR and NP? That is very dangerous in the real world. The 407 is flown in the FLY position as indicated on the throttle. Not the MAX position. If the FADEC fails and goes into manual with the throttle at MAX, your rotors will overspeed and ruin you day real fast. Try pushing the FADEC Mode button out of AUTO and into MAN with the throttle in MAX. I'm curious to see how it is modeled. I noticed that at 35% TQE you are in level flight at 67Kts. At that setting and air speed I would not be able to hold my altitude. During training we would set the TQE to 30% and try to hold altitude , which the 407 will not. We do this during the settling with power recognition maneuver. I also noticed the Attitude Indicator never righted itself. It usually takes 5min or less. Other than that, this looks really nice. Hope you enjoy flying it as much as I do. Thanks for sharing.

Well that was different and first may I say you did well to get the thing off the ground if this was your first time ( bet you had a practice) I think us simmers sometimes forget how far we have come in just a few years since FSX and some others which started what was to become our hobby. I myself have always been into Airbus mainly A320 series but I was into helicopters in FSX which I got fairly good at but when I tried it in X- plane 10 it was a like a mad drummer with all my hands and feet trying to get the thing to fly, that's how good X-plane is modelled so well done and I for one look forward to more of your videos in a helicopter also full marks must go to the makers of this Addison for there work and small purchase price.

Thanks VIC, I had one quick practice before the video, otherwise would have been torn apart =) I think I need to do a little more on the A320 and A330. I am thinking of doing a series on the FSLabs A320, but will see how if my permits. Let me know if you have anything on mind for a future video!

Different to flying a craft designed to slip through the air, like riding on a bed of silk?. My son is learning to fly a helicopter but I never trusted an aircraft where the wing was going faster than the fuselage and which battered the air into submission. Although you may deduce I am not a helicopter fan, you produced a great video.

Hi and thank you for this really cool video! I would like to know if it is possible to get the "Main Panel Advertisers" via UDP to build a simulator. What are the specific DATAREFs?

I'm thinking of getting this. I saw that it has some contextual menus for customization (Garmin 530, radios, etc). Can you choose to have modern avionics on the dash as opposed to gauges ? Also; is it possible to fly from left seat? Is there native Avitab support for both seats ?
@BlackFoxFalcon3 жыл бұрын
No, yes and yes. Modern Avionics, no. Dreamfoil would have to redesign the entire cockpit. And for a hobby developer, that would be too much and if I`m not mistaken, also illegal. You can set up your view so that you could fly from the left seat. However, most of the times, Chopper Pilots fly from the right seat. But, nonetheless, you could set it up. I think Avitab is supported. What you can also do is add the RealityXP GTN 750 to it. You have to buy it but, once you have it, you can download a program that implements it into the Bell 407. Dreamfoil supported the project so it`s legal. Hope that helps.

@1st-Impressions7 жыл бұрын
Yes. Flying a helo is difficult because everything has to be perfect, field of view, joystick sensitivities and dead zones, Track IR limits, plus the helo yaws like crazy unless you have got some speed, tries to kill you if you hover backwards yada yada. It takes a lot of practice and adjustment. Good videos btw.

Q8Pilot What do you think has more detail and realism FSX, X-plane 10 or 11?
@ElephantoGaming7 жыл бұрын
Stomper003 you can chose yourself but I think that if you have the money and the effort you can make FSX looking really realistic and nice but x plane 10/11 has a really good community and there is more realistic flight dynamics (as I've heard) so it's a hard choice if you have the effort and you have the money you can put into FSX it's beautiful (as I said) but if you want a sim that is nice out of the box then x plane is probably better

Beautifully modeled heli but spool up sounds cartoonish. What would it take to drive to an airport & record the actual sound of a B407 startin up?? Heck, you could record sittin in your car hangin the mic out the window. Common Dreamfoil!! Really?
@Q8Pilot7 жыл бұрын
Hopefully they would improve the sounds in the next update. Thanks for watching!
@sdavidp.89736 жыл бұрын
yes, I totally agree about the sounds. it gets worse when you use xprealistic as there is this incredibly annoying knocking sound when you are spooling up the turbine, like its a piston engine or something starting up. I usually turn off xprealistic when starting up the turbine and then turn it back on once the rotor is up to flight rpm.

very nice video! Perhaps you can answer this but how do you prevent speeding up but still increasing altitude when you raise the collective during landing?
@CharlesDSmith-mv7zi6 жыл бұрын
As you are landing, you pull back on the cyclic to raise the nose of the helicopter. That reduces the forward speed. At the same time, you lower the collective to reduce the lift and keep your vertical speed descent speed about 500 ft /sec. Don't descend too much faster than 500 or you'll get into a vortex ring state (VRS) where you're descending faster than your air column and your rotors won't be able to produce lift and you'll crash. You learn about VRS very quickly if you fly the Huey in DCS. Trust me, I speak from experience :-D
