@@jimjimjjjimjijmjim Hi Jim, slight danger of dissecting the frog obviously, but I think it is a genuinely surprising lyric that entirely reframes the song and actually made me laugh out loud the first time I heard it - without really knowing why. That one lyric opened the song up into a short story in my head. It wasn’t just a generic, slightly voyeuristic, remembrance of a girl at school, it was a story about the impact people with that kind of gravitational pull have on the lives of others. Not necessarily good or bad- throwing discuss for Liverpool & Widnes is impressive, but also kind of parochial- there will be a huge amount of commitment for little or no financial award. It almost feels like a backhanded compliment - I mean well done, but equally so what? It’s not a life I’d want - even if it was an option. This person has been sent down this life path by a chance encounter with this girl. I think we’ve all met people like that - people that seem to make lasting marks on others almost incidentally and this single couplet always makes me think of that- of the waves that we make in the lives of others without giving it a second thought. Does that make sense? Others will have different reasons for liking it of course.
