This is for my friend Ronan, who is the personification of this song ,in my mind anyway. He passed away last week after a long debilitating illness. We miss him, we love, we never forget him.
@ieltsteachergerard59574 жыл бұрын
If he had a friend who dedicated this song for him then you all were lucky. We never lose someone even when we don't think of them every day because they leave an imprint on us forever. I haven't had the same lose as you but when I do I will get drunk and listen to B&S. :)

This is not a pop song. This is a work of literature with musical backing.

You should try to listen to their EP's that are previous to this; this is actually a mix of three songs if I am not wrong; the state that I am in, lazy line painter jane, and string bean jean, there three or them it's on the Wikipedia site; the literature quality of the lyrics is more obvious on those songs.

I bought this album with my first salary; for me Belle and Sebastian's masterpiece. It still excites me like the first listen, or like when I saw them in Rome in concert at the Orus club.

This was the song chosen by Electric Honey for B&S to record as a single/EP but Stuart persuaded them to allow a full album recorded at Ca Va studios in Glasgow. I still have the original demo cassette which when first listened to, people likened to Donovan.

This is awesome. I was quite a die-hard B&S fan some years ago, not anymore, but it still gave me chills to think about this cassette. May I ask you how did you manage to get it?
@hashburystumble60218 жыл бұрын
I was "studying" at Stow College on the Music Business course where the not yet fully formed Belle & Sebastian sent their demo tapes. Two years later the same course found Snow Patrol & issued their 1st release (under a different name) & the same year Biffy Clyro played a lunchtime set in the car park.

Hashbury Stumble what year was that? I did the HNC course 00-01 and we did a band called Pupkin. I remember getting a few of the original B&S and Biffy EP'S from Alan Rankine. think I've got a couple in the loft.

I was surprised I was happy for a day in 1975 I was puzzled by a dream It stayed with me all day in 1995 My brother had confessed he was gay It took the heat off me for a while He stood up with a sailor friend Made it known upon my sister's wedding day. Got married in a rush to save a kid from being deported Now she's in love I was so touched, I was moved to kick the crutches From my crippled friend She was not impressed Cause I cured her on the Sabbath I went to confess When she saw the funny side, we introduced my child bride To whiskey and gin To whiskey and gin. The priest in the booth had a photographic memory For all he had heard He took all of my sins and he wrote a pocket novel Called The State That I'm In So I gave myself to God There was a pregnant pause before he said okay Now I spend my days turning tables round in Marks & Spencer They don't seem to mind. I gave myself to sin, I gave Myself to providence and I've Been there and back again The state that I am in. I gave myself to sin, I gave Myself to providence and I've Been there and back again The state that I am in. Oh love of mine, would you condescend to help me? Cause I am stupid and blind Desperation is the Devil's work, it is the folly Of a boy's empty mind Oh and now I'm feeling dangerous Riding on city buses for a hobby is sad Why don't you lead me to a living end I promised that I'd entertain my crippled friend, My crippled friend. I gave myself to sin, I gave Myself to providence and I've Been there and back again The state that I am in. I gave myself to sin, I gave Myself to providence and I've Been there and back again The state that I am in. I gave myself to sin, I gave Myself to providence and I've Been there and back again The state that I am in. I gave myself to sin, I gave Myself to providence and I've Been there and back again The state that I am in. I gave myself to sin And I've been there and back again Oh yeah

Morrissey can only dream of writing a song this beautiful...! (Okay, I take that back. I'm a reformed Smiths fan and they meant a lot to me in my younger years. Morrissey is working on ruining that now, of course, but he can never change the fact that I Know It's Over is a heartbreaker of epic proportions. But still, I think Belle & Sebastian are, ultimately, a better band with more variety.)
