I just recently discovered the English version, and although I adore Patrick Fiori's interpretation of his character, and cannot express how perfect is his performance, I think nothing could have prepared me to hear Steve Balsamo as Pheobus. His voice is like pure, warm honey. Young, fresh, delicate. Definitely the best foreign casting they could have made.

Belle, is the only word I know that suits her well When she dances oh, the stories she can tell A free bird trying out her wings to fly away And when I see her move I see the hell to pay She dances naked in my soul and sleep won't come And it's no use to pray this prayers to Notre Dame Tell, who'd be the first to raise his hand and throw a stone I'd hang him high and laugh to see him die alone Oh Lucifer, please let me go beyond god's law And run my fingers through her hair Esmeralda Belle, there is a demon inside her who came from hell And he turned my eyes from god, and oh, I fell He put this heat inside me I'm ashamed to tell Without my god inside I'm just a burning shell The sin of Eve she has in her I know so well For want of her I know I'd give my soul to sell Belle, this gypsy girl is there a soul beneath her skin And does she bear the cross of all our human sin Oh Notre-Dame please let me go beyond god's law Open the door of love inside Esmeralda Belle, even though her eyes seem to lead us to hell She may be more pure more pure than the words can tell But when she dances feelings come no man can quell Beneath her rainbow coloured dress there burns the well My promised one please let me one time be untrue Before in front of god and man I marry you Who would be the man who'd turn from her to save his soul To be with her I'd let the devil take me whole Oh, Fleur-De-Lys I am a man who knows no love I go to open up the rose Esmeralda She dances naked in my soul and sleep won't come And it's no use to pray this prayers to Notre Dame Tell, who'd be the first to raise his hand and throw a stone I'd hang him high and laugh to see him die alone Oh Lucifer,please let me go beyond god's law And run my fingers through her hair Esmeralda Esmeralda

I imagined myself dancing as Esmeralda while my favorite trio of my favorite RnB male singers sang their parts respectively in their RnB way of singing! :) But this song talks about different men who have desires to one girl and she is Esmeralda!
@aldranzam3456 Жыл бұрын
it's not the kind of desire you want thrown your way though... it's non-consensual violent desire. It's so well written how the three men portray themselves as victims of desire while giving Esmeralda no consideration as an actual person. There is no hero in this tale.

As someone who's bilingual it's frustrating when I want someone to listen to NNDP who doesn't understand French because the English versions really don't do it justice.

ukuleledeparis, I don't like the English version it comes out so dirty as if I've never heard the French version.
@sdkelmaruecan29077 жыл бұрын
It's not that bad, I thought the translators did a pretty good job given how hard it must have been to keep the spirit of the song while centering it around the word 'belle'. In any thing, the original version is always better but in all fairness, it's not that bad.

Hmm...I'm bilingual, and I personally feel that each version is gorgeous and I really enjoy the fact that they're all slightly different. Personally I'd just suggest to someone who hasn't heard any version to try all of them out and see which they enjoy the most.
@beaq67556 жыл бұрын
I'm bilingual too and I find it awesome how many languages can convey the concept of beauty and desire and human despair in many different ways, each highlighting different emotions, and still be absolutely beautiful in their own way. To be offended because translations aren't absolutely identical to the original is like insulting the translation and those who worked hard on it, in my opinion.

I was wondering why Partic Fiori sounded weird in English, took me a few listens to recognize Steve Balsamo. Garou has such a passionate French, it's disheartening to hear that passion lost to the English version.

leenbizzle I'm sorry. Can you put the name to the character?
@StatRM6 жыл бұрын
illusionspark1991 Garou is Quasimodo, and Patrick Fiori is Phoebus, who, from what I believe the OP said, was replaced with Steve Balsamo in the English cast.

Really nice song with nice lyrics. But it can't tip the French version, I feel like the English version is not as poetic as the French. And I don't know why, because 2/3 of the singers are the same as in the French version, but their voices just don't sound as emotional/passionate as in the French one.

I think when they say they basically mean her vag. But they cant just say vag. They have to to make it musical and have a deeper meaning.

Well part of it is they also have to make the syllables of the sentences fit into the same song and have the rhyme too, so its hard to get good translations i'd imagine.
