One of my all-time favorite Belle & Sebastian songs, "This Is Just a Modern Rock Song," performed live at Royal Albert Hall, June 23, 2016, during the "If You're Felling Sinister" night. They rarely play this live.

wow thank you. I got to know Belle & Sebastien like 20 years ago with this song and is still one of my favorite among another 50 I was listening to today. I was fortunate to see them with the Cal. Philarmonic Orchestra in the Hollywood Bowl with The Shins opening and later in Mexico. Funny how "just" another modern rock song turned out to be among "the best" rock songs in the last 20 years huh. Cheers and thank you for sharing :)

i saw this played in Atlanta on the Storytelling/Fold Your Hands Tour. Had no idea what it was but saw the guy running the soundboard getting super into it so I knew it was special. I could see the set list taped to his table and caught the name. Been in awe of the song ever since. Absolute B&S Perfection

I’m not as clever as Mark Twain I only buy a book for the way it looks, and put it back on the shelf again

Nothing cynical or proud in the lyrics or chords, but want to know reasons for the title?

Yeah. Or my interpretation, at least. The song is 7:31, which is not considered ‘radio friendly’, but it’s so damn catchy. It’s three chords with a more complex vocal composition. It strikes me as something Lou Reed would have written (R.I.P.) The song is a self-conscious confession of personal faults and it gives little insights into the lives of several different people. The last line- “because this song has got to stop somewhere”- is a reminder that it’s longer than the typical modern rock song.
