Utterly gorgeous singing. Round sounds, a consistently supported line, the embellishments grafted onto this seamless line, and the expression coming from the music and singing rather than histrionics. This is what opera is about, or rather used to be. There is nothing comparable to this ravishing beauty now.

Oh, you are wrong there. This is exactly, what belcanto is aiming at right now. Of course, this is out of this world fantastic, we'll never quite get another Sutherland (amazing mezzos are more of a common commodity), but in this day and time you cannot get away with anything less than respect for the work at hand in a manner, originated by Richard Bonynge and Joan Sutherland. And then you get the odd thing out, as in one of the productions of this year's Rossini Opera Festival.

Norma is a bel canto opera.Sutherland and Horne have never been surpassed by anyone and I mean anyone. This is a fulfilment of a tradition, that as been lost , until the emergence of this duo. True bel canto.
