So I've got both of these is the opposite colourways (Lunar on Compact, Black on Regular). The top magnet flap comes off far too often on the regular sized one if the load approaches the 15L mark. The bag works best flatter at the top with most of the weight and volume at the bottom of the bag, or else the magents get loose. It's a much bigger issue if I'm trying to put the bag on after loading it up and closing it, and then a few steps later, someone tells me my bag is open. On the 12L Lunar colourway, it's less of an issue. I don't know if that's the effect of knowing I can only fit less gear in so I don't pack it as much, or if it has to do with the size, or if it has to do with the materials. Just my 2 cents.

100%. Having to constantly weight up what I put in this thing so the flap doesn't come off is a huge design flaw.

I'm really not sold on the top closure: There are reviews out there pointing out that the flap will come undone easily. Though it does look organized and accessible. It doesn't seem to crossover well to post work use cases like a quick run to the groceries.

They did a great job with the Melbourne series bags. I've used mine for a few weeks now and it's great when I don't want to bring a lot of stuff. The only gripe I have is that the outside material likes to track cat hairs so I have to brush mine off with a lint roller quite a bit.

I agree - those are probably the main two concerns most people have. 18L is smaller than the typical 20-22L. The magnets on the Melbourne are solid I must say. But I have heard instances where people have had trouble with the top flap.

Here's the logic at 5:05. If you need to get your t-shirt by swing the bag across and using the quick access zipper, then tell me, how do you put on the shirt with the bag still on, wouldn't it be easier to take the bag off?

you mentioned there is no problem is securing the top no matter how heavy or light you pack the bag. That is completely wrong. Obviously you've not used the bag at all. If you pack the bag heavily or even medium, the top will flap open. The design is a failure. the bag will be open most of the time. The only time the flap is secure is if you pack the bag one quarter full. But why buy a 18L bag that limits you to a quarter full capacity ? that's 4.5L capacity. Even if you pack it half full, and you're riding a bicycle or any sudden movements will immediately open the flap. total design failure. Also the external material is a dust magnet. Need to have a lint roller to constantly keep it looking presentable. I would expect you to point out all these in your review of the bag. If I just want to know the positive points only, I'll just need to go to Bellroy's website

I got it as I gift and the magnets aren't that strong. Bellroy Customer Service said that my item is not faulty and I should be packing less.. The side pocket is impossible to use without the magnets opening. It is advertised as an 18L bag with "SURPRISING STORAGE" but you will be able to carry max a laptop, a water bottle and a pouch. Maybe an umbrella. If you put a jacket in it that will open the magnet as soon as you move the bag to put it on or dash to take the bus. Of course, your experience might differ based on what you carry but be aware that you might experience some of the issues I had or all of them.
