Take into account that she was, and is, done with this whole "will they won't they" with the Alliance and Horde. She discusses it in the BFA opening. She's done with the tiny skirmishes. With both forces dancing around each other with truces that get broken. She wanted to make a stand that her Horde couldn't come back from. Trying to take Ashenvale is chump change. The problem I have with all of this is that Blizzard *decided* to turn Sylvanas into an impulsive fool. I never perceived her to be so impulsive and insecured back in WC3 and earlier in WoW. In BfA, she managed to be influenced by a dying night-elf... And even when she should be feeling level-headed, explain to me how her tactics with the loyalist players make any sense: she keeps telling the loyalist players "to act like rebels with Saurfang" while she sends some of the last Sunreavers we have against us, as if it was part of her grand scheme to kill them off (and maybe it is, which means her mustache-twirling-levels are over 9000). She could've trapped the rebels here and ended them there, as she knew fully well they were coming... but no, I guess her plan was to let them live so they could make the cinematic where she bails Team-Rocket-style happen. It's simple: for Sylvanas, Blizzard was overly inspired by Cersei Lannister... Blizzard has decided to ruin Sylvanas, to ruin yet another Horde leader. How long before we find Sylvanas as a raid boss? Or even worse, as a dungeon boss? Or as a end-of-zone-event like Garrosh in Nagrand? I hope this never happens, really. We already lost two capital cities to this idiocy. I'm glad there won't be a warchief after Sylvanas. It was getting ridiculously stupid to see every warchief die/leave after 2 expansions.
@AnadynTheCursed5 жыл бұрын
I think that Bellular's account misses the whole "cause as much death and destruction as possible for the larger plot" at the Teldrassil. She couldn't have come up with that during the war, and it means that it influenced her desicion there. Like, there aren't that many battles that can cause more death than burning an enemy capital packed with civillians. And hey, Cersei (especially book!Cersei) is way worse both in terms of planning and adapting plans to changing circumstances, she brought on herself everything that happened to her without any larger forces acting against her plans at the start.
@drudle5 жыл бұрын
Well, it was easy for Sylvanas to be patient when she was still in the beginning and middle of her machinations. It wasn't until everything was coming to fruition (and ultimately falling apart) that she became reckless. Which is totally realistic. Have you ever played Overwatch? Or any game with a time limit? When you have five minutes you take your time, plan out your strategy, and act carefully. It isn't until you have ten seconds left that you begin doing a mad dash, throwing yourself onto the point just to gain a little ground in hopes of a win. As you reach the end of your progress, you become more desperate, not less stressed.

And there's differences between Scourge, Forsaken, and others. The idea of undead being emotionless and empty is neat and all, but without that you have nothing to propel them. Even self-preservation is based on emotion (fear). The only way you could say they have no emotion is if you called their free will into question; if all their actions were dependent on the will of someone with emotions then they could still go out and do stuff while still feeling nothing.

7:45 "if she was like this at all times, the War would have played out differently." She WAS like this the entire time, till they decided in BFA that she was an easily triggered and baited Saturday Morning Cartoon Villain instead. "She acts differently under pressure." Yeah, starting THIS expansion. We could say the same thing about Daenerys with that logic can't we? Blizzard decided to 180 the calm collected strategist and went with "bitches be crazy" to force her into scenarios she wouldn't have found herself in the way she was characterized before. The ranger general that kept her cool despite having Saurfang insult her by calling her Arthas (a name that still sends rage through her) and her reacting calmly and with a clever quip... is now triggered by the word 'hope' and easily baited. Give me a break -_- Just as how they decided they would wipe everything away she'd ever said or done that was good (and was WRITTEN with that intent) and just went 'well she was lying..' which is the cheapest way out you can imagine. Fact of the matter is, they didn't want to have an actual war with the brilliant strategist Sylvanas vs the Inexperienced Anduin. They wanted the Unhinged Saturday Morning Cartoon Sylvanas and the Superhero Mary Sue Anduin and they pushed it. Which is why BFA's storytelling isn't just one of WoW's weakest from that perspective, but a prime example of how 'foreshadowing' is NOT character development.
@drudle5 жыл бұрын
I'm curious why people really push the "Saturday Cartoon villain" angle. It's pretty much the only term anyone can come up with (to the extent that you need to use it multiple times in one post, ouch). At least vary it up and throw some mustache twirling in if you're going to mischaracterize her portrayal. See, she isn't Skeletor. People keep trying to imply she is. She isn't cackling at the sky going, "Nyehehe! EVIL!" If anything, she's Azula (was ATLAB even on Saturday mornings? Hm) who is typically pointed at one of the best, most complex characters on the show. Both characters are tactful, strong women in authority who are yearning for power to protect their people and fight their enemies. Both gather a group of allies at their disposal whom they confide in during their campaign to spread the reach of their empire. Both ascend to a role of kingship, only to find that their allies had left them alone with their own encroaching madness. Both are left near alone, lashing out at anyone around them as they sprial downward, reduced to a shell of their former selves, driven mad by the corrupting influence of their newfound power and their self-imposed loneliness as that same power is being threatened by both enemies and former allies as their city is marched on. Sure, you can call it cliche. It's been done before (multiple times) just as most things in Warcraft (they didn't exactly originate anything.) But to claim she's been reduced to some cardboard cutout is pretty not on point.
@AnastasiaBeaverhausen-tn6cx5 жыл бұрын
no. She did NOT lie. There is a CONTINGENCY plan which occurs DIRECTLY AFTER THIS. her loyalists were told and prepared for different outcomes and this was one of them. She got the souls fed to hungering darkness and unified the horde / alliance which were necessary for her plans for when the void invade azeroth. she and her forsaken are the only ones immune. all you have to do is dedicate some time to read and watch the videos for scenes you don't see She's been nothing but calm and cunning. Just because she raised her tone and said "burn it," when saurfang betrayed her occupation of darnassus plan doesn't change that. Just because she said "i trusted you," during the Mak'Gora doesn't change that. Her tones have seemed increasingly annoyed, if anything because she's got her plans going fine. Sylvanas plan is to usurp death so when the void invades she can save the world since she and her people are immune. In order to do this the hungering darkness needed countless souls. War helped accomplish this AND helped unify the horde / alliance so they can stand with her as one when the void comes. There's literally a plan A B C D, and a contingency plan for all. If annoying, she's acted annoyed in her tones, because at this point, her plans of the souls and unifying horde / alliance is complete. She and her followers don't need to stay in a place where we are unwanted. as far as arthas name giving her rage, She said that DURING THE GARROSH QUEST LINE IN SILVERPINE. AFTER she KILLED HERSELF at the end of ICC and start of next expansion cata. she's probably over it and more worried about THE FUCKING VOID INVADING THE PLANET and HOW TO SAVE IT when only her loyalists support her because everyone else is hateful for those who are different. the alliance abandoned sylvanas once she regained her identity and helped other undead find theirs. She became their hero and gave them a home. She was abused by garrosh under his thumb. She offered gilneas mercy, "mercy that i was never shown," referencing arthas. Then the entire legion expansion Greymane and his dogs stalked her. If a horde leader staked one of the alliance ones an expansion we would never hear the end of it. goddess, and as for Khaleesi was a hero that was degraded by misogynists. A little girl raped and owned rises above, liberates and inspires others, and goes to reclaim what's rightfully hers but has to be stopped when males have done much worse. Sylvanas will not be getting stabbed in the heart just because incest-lovers and misogynists were writing it and would have rather scene perversions of rape and incest instead. Funny how you can be strong, have dragons, have death powers, follow your own plans and your own sense of "honor," but because you don't have a FUCKING DICK everyone dumbs it down to "bitches." As soon as a female does what men do but better, and more honorable, what do you do? DEGRADE THEM :D ofc

I really enjoyed the video, Bellular. However, I think you're giving the writing team too much credit. It isn't just the chopping of the narrative into different mediums- the whole handling of characters this expansion follows a trend of 'one hand not knowing what the other is doing' where their story is involved. The same thing happened with Cataclysm - you get Stonetalon Garrosh, Twilight Highlands Garrosh, and then BOMB THE CITY Garrosh. Just because they conclude a plotline doesn't mean it was consistent. And yeah, one could say that the story is showing you a multifaceted character, though it seems all too much a covering of a disjointed narrative plan. But I think the size of the game and its update cycle in addition to the writing staff (in Metzen's own words) writing around the choices of the gameplay suggests otherwise.

She was insecure in life too. She had authority issues and butted heads (metaphorically) with Prince Kael’thas several times. But do NOT use the excuse of her tragic backstory to justify how they wrote her this expansion. She was a character who was set on the path to overcoming her trauma in Warcraft III. She genuinely set the Forsaken on the path to creating a new society, to finding a new place for themselves within the Horde. She gave them hope. When did she lose hope? When did she turn away from creating a new path, a new society? This has never been adequately explained. Just because someone has experienced trauma does NOT mean they will become a villain. This storyline was still complete garbage. A story stops being tragic when the traumatized character starts becoming the bully. And it also stops being interesting.

I really think to understand the emotions involved in this, you should read "The Body Keeps the Score".. you will find that, yes, the traumatized can become the bully, because they are out to hurt people before they can be hurt again. There are multiple coping mechanisms a trauma victim can employ, some of those lead to becoming not a good person.

Gemcat oh I know all about that, I’ve been there myself. I get how someone ends up there, and I’m saying that they haven’t adequately explained how Sylvanas did. When did she give up on hope? When did she decide that creating a new society wasn’t the right thing after all? Why did she plan the Wrathgate? She was full of hope for the future in Warcraft III, even though the present sucked. I would have thought being reunited with Nathanos would have only helped her feel better. She seemed to be finding a new place for herself in the world then. She seemed to be reaching out to Baine, and establishing the Forsaken as Horde members. What changed? I’ve yet to see an adequate explanation for her nihilism. And when did she start working for Death? When did she start wanting to just kill everyone? This makes no sense given where she was at the end of Warcraft III. I didn’t say the story was unrealistic. I said it was uninteresting. It’s been done ten million times and I’m sick of it. I also said it wasn’t tragic. Just disappointing. Put it this way: I was hoping she was Sansa Stark, but I got Cersei Lannister instead.
@sunwalkeredaaga41545 жыл бұрын
Richard Ashendale why work so hard to free others? Why try to protect them from the Alliance? Why seek a position of power? Why become the Banshee Queen, if she didn’t think there was some sort of future for the Forsaken? Maybe hope isn’t the right word. But she must have at least felt there was some meaning in their existence. Otherwise, why bother? She never really valued the Horde, but she knew it was necessary for the Forsaken to exist. If the Horde had withdrawn it’s protection back then, the Alliance would have slaughtered the Forsaken. At that time, she obviously did care about her people: otherwise why frame Varimathras? If she’d really not cared then she would have owned up to what she did, fled, and then watched the Alliance and Horde slaughter the Forsaken. She’s a former Ranger General, she could have eluded both factions. Instead she frames Varimathras and gets the Alliance to turn the Undercity back over to her when they’re done.

Bellular, Sylvanas didn't ask for Saurfang death, just to track him down. It was a willing request from undeads and dark rangers. Sylvanas just let them do their thing. What you really miss is the reason behind the Horde wanting to use sylvanas or believe sylvanas to take their payback from the injustice the alliance have inflicted them.
@TheMoonlitFaerie5 жыл бұрын
Additionally, to me it makes sense that Sylvanas has these emotional reactions beyond her control when things go sideways. Lillian Voss (in game!) does make it quite clear that nobody comes back from death *unchanged*. That everyone breaks a bit from the process. Sylvanas shouldn't be an exception to that, it's what makes the forsaken - in my opinion - great!

If she was already hyper-emotional before, then going through the process of becoming a banshee, then zombie + death & more death, must make her an absolute emotional wreck. Yeah?
@sufode5 жыл бұрын
@@cryptowatcher5963 I don't think she was a particularly emotional character before but she was always a narcissistic machiavellian. Failure to those people is extremely traumatic because it doesn't even register as a possibility to them. She failed to save her people and most importantly for her character, she failed herself. She was also literally turned into a banshee, a tormented soul denied of free will to be used for war by her own killer. Knowing all of that it's understandable how repressed emotions and trauma would cloud her judgement. It's also hard to judge her character when we know she knows a lot that we dont x'P. It makes it hard for people to relate to her when they(understandably) don't make the effort to learn about her story and her psychology.

@@ZZZ-zer Yeah but people are inconsistent. Imo Sylvanas is a very interesting character and her story is pretty good but its been executed like straight garbage. It's not bad writing to have a character be multi faceted, but when you only see one of those facets 99% of the time in game it may seem out of character to most people but in fact its just the part of herself she tries to hide coming out.

Again, turning her into some sort of evil, soulless villain is still so dumb and unimaginative. It's like if some writer got picked up to do The Punisher or Preacher and then decided to turn the main character into a merciless killer of innocents. It's just stupid. I mean ok, they try to justify her actions, but it's still stupid. Somehow some writer got the "genius" idea to turn her into the main villain of the series, and that's what we're building up to now. It's just that it feels completely tone-deaf if you come from WC3 and WoW up til WOTLK. They're just shoehorning her in there. (They could try to justify her behaviour with some crazy twist like with that leak, but that would be pretty friggin stupid too, TBH.)

By siding against Sylvanas we're forgetting the bigger picture as we should remember that the old gods as the servants of void lords, THE big bad since day 1. EVERYTHING Sargeras did was to stop the void lords. The single most important piece of the puzzle is the panic that was displayed in the Three Sisters. Everything should be read through that lense. With the Goblins cannon waiting to fire on Sylvanas order. The only thing that would save the Alliance capital at that time, would be to pull a Rob Starkk while the SI:7 are sending small forces to take the cannon but that would have to be a suicide mission and only Anduin and the leaders in SI:7 should/would know that plan.

I see it as a master planner whose plans didn't meet the 100% completion but are far enough along that she is happy. Her final thought makes the emotional scared seem far fetched. When he went faction neutral as Cenarion Circle during the Cataclysm and abandoned her again, I have predicted that it will be just a mater of time before Tyrande just snaps and once that happens she will go Maiv level crazy with vengeance, just immeasurably more powerful, as she is the chosen of Elune and the most powerful priestess of Elune that has ever existed. And Wailing Caverns established in Vanilla that when something goes wrong in the Emerald Dream, you purge everything that comes out of it. Worgen curse came out of it and was not purged. Latest Tyrande line on "rabid dog" was a throwback to what Sylavans used to say about Worgens since the Cataclysm - telling us that Tyrande is becoming a Sylvanas of the Alliance.

Blizzard could have added all this internal monologue for her character in some in game cut scenes...

It's interesting that while Sylvanas seems to act in anger at the burning, there is a somber logic. Elune's intervention showed her she would oppose Sylvanas, so what she did? She tried to kill hope. And she succeeded, to a point. She managed to turn many fallen Kaldorei, make them believe Elune had abandoned them. It's like at that moment she decided that her plan to splinter the Alliance was less important than breaking Elune's worship.

This was a great video. I finally understand her, like you said, I think is a pretty good story just poorly told. Thanks for the video!

I'm kinda wondering if Pandaria has more to do with her (The Sha and things said in the Heart of Fear) makes me think of her (maybe the "Empress" that's clearly there is a red herring? Also I wonder if she has a deal with "Death" to get them many souls in exchange for Oblivion (kinda like what Callisto asked for on Xena: Warrior Princess...she said she wanted oblivion not just death, she didn't want an afterlife in Elysian Fields or Tartarus she wanted life to end with nothing afterward) I can see Sylvanas maybe wanting the same

Sylvanas makes people so mad lmao, all because of Darnassus. They want to called her stupid but shes a brilliant character. She's highly intelligent but her plans don't always work as intended or are ruined due to her emotions. She's written with the ups and downs of a biography of a real human.

Excellent analysis! Truly saddening that we've not been getting the full picture in-game because they wanted to sell the books separately... Blizzard may not have EA's microtransactions but by separating the story from the game they ended up playing themselves!

So happy you made these videos, this makes all much clearer. And I agree that blizzard should have made a better way to tell this story. Can’t wait for more and your other wow series!

The ingame cinematics are enough to portrait Sylvannas as emotionally unstable, which is the major reason for whole this mess. She presents herself as calm schemer who plays 4D chess on her spare time... but the moment some little bit goes not according to plan, she loses her mind. And when someone taunts her? She becomes a pathetic, spitfull being with no other goal than making other suffer so that she can feel good for a few seconds... That is Sylvannas presented ingame.
