The core of the Classic experience included add ons. Players were writing add on on the fly. Let's not forget. There were BOOKS that outlined the leveling, gearing, talent progression. BOOKS that include full maps. Let's not pretend that all players did not use addon or Websites.

Not so much at the start only over some time. That's the element that can't be duplicated in Classic. It was new, the majority (outside the beta) didn't know what we were doing, zones were new it was all a great adventure, not speed levelling etc like now

Dularr you are so wrong it hurts! Most people, even in the end game, did not know that addons even exist. And many refused to install them even after being told by the raid leader. Thottbot was the go-to for info, but even that wasn't as complete as wowhead nowadays. I'd say that 5% or less were runing addons back then. I know people that cleared AQ 40 without ever using a single addon.

My recommendation for people who 'do' decide to use Questie is to turn off objective tracking. This allows you to enjoy the classic feel of having to figure out from quest text where to go, while also allowing you to see where quest starts are. Very useful for doing grey quests, as well, since they don't have icons.

I'm loving not having quest markers, having to find them, having to explore to reach where the target area is. I love having to explore to get things done. I love combat being slow. I love I have to be on the lookout for marauding enemies closing (night elf in the furbolg caves west of Daalanor). I love that I didn't know "This kind of shop" was a title and I disabled that and have to find the shops the "hard" way, as well as the trainers. I love that, while I've been in only a few short lived parties without much interaction, people to help out each other, buffing other players they run by.

Classiccodex, I've found is a lot cleaner then Questie. Instead of the huge arrow head things they give you dots with multiple colors depending on the level of the mob. They are also not huge, they look about the size of a node if you have gatherer. It shows you all the quests, low level to high level. Once you've accepted the quest the question mark on your map goes grey til the objective is complete and then it turns yellow. They also have a setting that you can put an exclamation mark over the mob your attacking, in case there are different mobs in the area. Nightsaber stalkers, Young Nightsabers. And your questgiver/turn in has the exclamation as well.

I use Questie to experience more of Classic. I've basically untoggled everything except the Quest markers on the map - I still read all the quest text etc., even if I know what to do. I do understand the joy of finding a hidden quest giver, but at the same time, not having it, means that I'm in a constant fear of missing another fun quest. I really want to experience all the levelling content, so missing quests in the name of authenticity just isn't worth it to me.

Fun quest in Vanilla? Like kill 12 boars or 12 pigs? Fear that you feel is from missing a quest that will give you XP and having to grind that out, not from missing a "fun" quest.

For the most part I agree with the addons presented. For now, I am basically only using interface addons - simply for increased functionality and customization. TitanPanel is great in that respect and I like the simplifying of aspects of the UI.

there where no mandatory addons in old wow. Maybe when you started doing late game raids like AQ then some addons became VERY useful. But playing the game and doing tier 1 / tier 2 raids there was no real need for addons.

As an old-school vanilla/BC/Wrath raider, specifically healer (shaman and druid), I always used BigWigs or DBM, a threat meter, and a dps meter that also showed healing stats. On my shaman, I also had a totem management addon (Totemus was my favorite). Beyond that, I'd just tab out to Thottbot or WowHead for other non-time-sensitive info. I didn't want to have a ridiculous amount of addons because I wanted to actually play the game as intended, but the raider-support addons help individual players function in a group environment without pissing people off or getting everyone wiped repeatedly.

Something to note is you can turn off the Questie icons on your map. No more knowing where spawns are located for that quest you are on. I use it only so that I do not miss any quests, as I want to do them all. It is a bit of a cheat to know where your quest will take you if it gives you no clue where it should go but I am willing to compromise on that. That and I used to play Vanilla years ago and I leveled 1-60 as a human warrior without addons.

And for the record, a lot of old addons became useless as Blizzard themselves incorporated them into the game! Some things are just too good to pass up, no matter their origins. :)

See, I use Questie in Classic to check which last few quests I've missed in a zone before moving on to another zone. For instance, "Mist" in Teldrassil. I feel like the vast majority of players probably miss that quest. It's tucked in the corner of the map in a spot that you don't really go to naturally (unless you're on a harpy killing rampage far beyond what the harpy killing quest requires), and it's an escort quest, so the questgiver isn't even there half the time, making it seem like there is no quest there.

I'm using it, but disabling everything but the pick-up and completions icons, because I want to get every quest done at the appropriate level, unlike how it happened in Classic, where I came back to areas and found things I'd never done before and lost that experience of getting the quest done when it was hard and I had to figure out what I had to do from the quest text.

Personal plug: I've been managing/updating Bagmeter for years and updated it for classic yesterday. It's a minimalist bag manager that just shows capacity and filled/empty bag slots. I'd used it waaaaay back and took over maintenance when Hamu quit.

Want to get the speed of Azeroth autopilot without missing out on the lore? Install immersion and set it to always play dialog. Azeroth autopilot will do its thing and you can immediately start running to the next objective. Immersion will play out the quest dialog for you while you're on the way. Gives you something to do read while travelling and you don't have to waste any time.

I use TSM on Retail since WoD, but I really do think it is one of the addons that crosses the line on Classic. It's just too sophisticated and powerful in the same way that Decursive was too sophisticated and powerful. Nothing beyond Auctioneer existed back then, and TSM has a tremendous influence on market forces. I'm not saying Blizzard should break it, but they definitely should pay close attention to it in case it becomes too much of an economic game changer.

Not sure of it was around for Vanilla, but Carbonite was the only way I survived Wrath. It was a quest helper and map replacement. Made the map like Google maps, zoom in and out, points of interest, quest objectives, etc....

Funny, one of the addons he doesn't recommend is the main thing that IMO is the biggest improvement to classic, having a quest helper. I played classic, it was very annoying to constantly have to either look things up on Thottbot or ask for help after getting super frustrated not being able to find what I was looking for in game due to vague quest text

I starting running questies but disabled the objective tracker. Found out i missed a few quests before getting that addon. I'll probably keep using it just for the quest giver tracking. Part of the classic experience was from the stories flushed out in the quests, don't want to miss out on those nuggets of lore/story gold because I never thought to look over there.

I tend to disasgree on Questie. If its ok to use Auctionator which is something I never used when I started, then I don't see the problem with Questie. For me, I know where most of the quests are from playing the game for so long but a few of them are obscure. It takes just as much time to get to them when you know where they are, it just saves time tabbing out to wowhead to try and find them, which is a resource that can be used but its outside the game. I prefer to be in the game and making use of the resources there.

Tho i wasn't... i was just making an observation... people complain about the current game for being too braindead... then when finaly get the old version of the game... they make it braindead themselves adding all the addons that replicate all the qol changes of the current version. My suggestion, if anything, is to try and experience classic without addons for a while... just to get that unique experience of actualy having to play the game yourself. Is up to you how you play, i am just making a suggestion :)

Blizzard added "display numbers on cool downs" to the interface menu regardless of addons in both retail and Classic. Although other addons come with many features, getting an addon just for numbered cool downs is pointless when it already exists in the interface options.

22 shammy on skeram and I use questie to get the general location of adds but more often than not you have to still read the flavor text and just because you know where to go doesnt make fighting them any easier lol just wanna level somewhat efficiently

I used show cool down timers in classic. ps: Raptor strike is on next melee, Add /startattack to raptor strike to get it to turn melee on if an enemy runs into melee while auto shot is on.

I had some similar thoughts about quest codex, however, I work now and my time is limited. I want to raid is classic and I don't have time to be running around, wasting what little time I have to play, trying to follow vanillas poorly described quest directions...

That is actually a huge aspect of the game many people love. Having said that I'm trying to plow through leveling also cuz endgame seems like so much fun.

I like to use questie but uncheck the objective markers in the settings (click on the minimap), so it just shows quest pickup and turnin locations. It's a little ridiculous to me that the exclamation points that indicate where quests are dont even show up on the map, I started playing in bc and didn't realize that wasn't always in the game. It's so easy to miss quests without this

Not a very fair review of Questie. It is very customizable so you can turn off those icons you showed. Plus Questie has a very cool journaling feature that allows you to keep track of your personal story.

I plan on soloing without addons just to play it as it was. But when my lady and I team on our Shaman/Druid combo I will use them. Her response to not using addons is "We don't have to live like this anymore"

When you made this version of the video for BFA you added DialogKey, an addon that allows you to interact with dialog using keybinds instead of clicking. Now I can’t live without it and not having it in Classic is killing meeee Update: I found it and they made it compatible! Yessss

A HUD that combines threat, swing and damage. Mail, Chat and AH add on too. I modifed the interface before I was out of the start zones because I found the regular one too kludgy. I started playing a year or so after original start.

I use a lot of these addons in Main WoW... Hahaha! Guess I can vouch for the video then! Don't have many on classic though... but I will try some of these, thank you. I also recommend MRP Classic / TRP Classic. If you RP, you won't want to be without them. I do use Questie however. I didn't play back in Classic, and looking around for everything isn't really for me. I do read the quest text, so most of the time I do know. It's just my memory that struggles. So don't feel bad if you use it, some random guy on youtube uses it. Hello \o.

I don't think questie and the like takes much from the experience. There's still amazing times of playing with others in groups, barely surviving more mobs than you can handle. It lets you focus more on doing the quests, than figuring out where to go for the quests. Plus showing quests on the mini map from any distance is something I REALLY like.

Tangent Addons for classic are on twitch. Just change the game in the upper right corner

I also was using sexymap, blacklist which was fun because you can add pvp targets you would kill on site for later when they caused trouble, and mapnotes which I could just pin a note to the map myself for whatever reason
