McFly Angler

4 жыл бұрын

This fly has been in the making for a while now. Paul from the youtube channel Killer Fuz contacted me about his idea for making a fly on a worm hook. One that will be fully weedless. I had already wanted a good sunfish imitation, so I started tying it. Then I came up with adding the orange beads for both a rattle and to insure it swims hook point up, or keeled. It took quite a few tries though to get this just right, and the first time I tried fishing this, I was getting fouled on my fly line because there wasn't enough stiff materials to keep the line from wrapping around. However, with the addition of the Faux bucktail, this issue has been fixed. I am very happy to say, this is the final version of the fly. Well I take that back, I found out that I liked using Coq de Leon soft hackle feathers instead of shlappen for the body feather. But, all in all this is my final version of the fly and I could not be happier.

I have been an avid Bass Fisherman since I was about 13 or 14. I am now 61 and I often regret never getting into Fly Fishing. After watching you tie this magnificent Fly, I am saddened because I know how much enjoyment I would have had if I would have dove in headfirst into this most rewarding form of Fishing. I've fished Bonefish, Tarpon, Snook, and Permit in Florida as well as the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico. All with Spinning Tackle. Yes, I enjoyed all of it but I now feel that it pales in comparison to what I would have experienced if I would have had a Fly rod in my hand. You Sir are a Maestro with your patience and skill. I look forward to more of your videos.

I might suggest that you have a longer bare wire stem on your trimmed joint connector, bend it down 90 degrees and insert it into the eye of the hook when tying it in. Adjust downward facing piece to be as long as the hook shank is thick. Would keep it from being pulled out and would be easier to keep centered when tying it down. Very nice concept! Should be a killer!
@McFlyAngler
@McFlyAngler 2 жыл бұрын
I thought about doing it into the eye yeah, however it closed the hole up too much and you wouldn’t be able to get thread in. Glad you like the concept. I wish I could convince a hook company to make a wide eyed hook like this and corresponding shanks. Lol

@McFlyAngler
@McFlyAngler 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah I think a spec would be fine, I would question them with a large red though. They could bend on a big one. Also this depends on your fly rod, how stiff and what weight it is. I’ve caught a 31” carp on a small thin hook but it was a 5wt rod which didn’t allow me to bend the hook. Lots of things come into play here whether or not it will work you know?

Nice. I too have been tying on EWG hooks for about a decade, and have learned a lot. That heavy wire and short eye shank on the hook your using presents a challenge. And the weight is totally unnecessary - these hooks always ride hook up. I personally have 5 or 6 patterns that I designed, tie, and fish - all weedless and snagless. Right now, it's really the only style hook I use for streamers and topwater. My favorite is the Decoy Dream Hook Worm 15 - it has a longer eye shank, it's thin, strong, and sharp, and available up to 3/0. I also use the OWNER Jungle Bass for saltwater, and big topwaters, mostly again in the 3/0, though it's significantly different than the Decoy 3/0. Any way, you've barely scratched the surface on what you can do with these hooks. Let me know if you'd like more info? Tight lines.
@McFlyAngler
@McFlyAngler 2 жыл бұрын
Cool, so the weight wasn’t just for keeping hook point up, they rattle. Anyway, I’ve tied a bit with these hooks no question, this is just one pattern I came up with. Thanks for the info.

have you considered tying this fly on the MFC Galloup's Belly Bumper hook? You would have the room to tie the entire fly without having to tie half of it on that shank. This is a great pattern!
@McFlyAngler
@McFlyAngler 4 жыл бұрын
Hey thanks! Well I hadn’t actually. I am kinda new to tying on these hooks. But I’ll take a look at them. So I’m guessing the shank near the eye of the hook is a bit longer? Now, one thing I will say is, that the extra shank actually extends out a bit further closer to the hook point which helps with the weedless feature and keeps this from fouling on the line. So I’m not sure how it will perform without that ridged area past the bend there. But I’ll give it a try some time for sure.

I always wonder, why every fly tier I ever have seen tie, chose to leave that little snip of thread, they have to clip off, when starting a fly. I just don't make that snip, and save a tiiiny bit of time. I knowv "That amounts to nothing during a whole life", but I've learned how to do time studies for industry, and "we" measure "everything". Also how far away from the place you use the tool, it is kept and all kinds of things, that seem like "nothing". I actually do a lot of "time wasting" things such as extra "locks" so a fly that gets cut a bit by a toorh, doesn't fall toattly from is self, and extra laquer for the same reason. But those things have good reasons - the snip clip has none..

Not sure man, If you have a way of doing it you like then by all means continue it. If it works for you, then awesome. I think the beauty of tying flies is being able to customize them to your own preferences. Make them your own ya know? Glad to hear you found your own way and its working for you.

@@McFlyAngler I agree. I just wonder - about tons of things, others do differently. It took me decades to realize, that many men (no hidden dissing) are so insecure, that when I asked them, why they did something a certain way, bcz I might be able to learn something (and have once in a while) they took it as me critizing them. I am happy to be corrected too - I "learned" to fly fish from books, and was really bad at casting. One day I was playing a bit with a friends red ABU (he didn't have a clue either) and making S's over my heasd, a guy who had been standing watching while eating something, walked over and said: "I do that every WE - how about I teach you, how to do it?" I was happy, that he asked, and he explained and showed, that I had to be "better" at the pauses (so logic, once yopu understand it, but I've never been good at learning from text) and all of a suddon I could cast. Since then I've done the same to a handfull or two when checking out PTs, and also taught them about always glasses for safety, and let them try my polaroids. And never got anything but thanks for it. Done right, most people are happy to be educated/helped a bit.

This fly is very complicated for sure. It’s an advanced fly. This is why I have beginners tying tutorials also. For people that are just beginning. :).
