I must have missed this video when it was released! I would love some more information about the camp. Teaching fly fishing and archery is really cool!

Oh yeah man, it’s out north of Uvalde, TX. It’s for boys that are 8-17yo. Their website is reachingoutdoors.org go check it out. They teach hunting, shooting, archery, fishing, etc at this camp. As well as meat processing of wild game, how to cook the game, I believe they will teach fly tying and wilderness survival skills as well. Pretty awesome for a young boy. There is a video (I actually made for them) on their website there that explains it all.

What size/type of wire did you add for weight?
@McFlyAngler14 сағат бұрын
Oh man, good question, it’s been a while since I made this video. Did I not put it in the description section? It’s tough for me to go back and look. If not, let me know and I’ll try to figure it out. But know that you don’t have to do anything exactly how I do it, add a larger lead wire for more weight or smaller wire for less weight. Make the fly your own and for your own needs

Hopefully, he is a good kid, but like every kid these days he loves video games and it’s a challenge to get him outdoors. Also he was at the worst age when covid hit. 1-2nd grade age. That’s the age kids should have been outside and playing in mud, however school systems turned him into a germaphobe and now he can’t really deal with much dirty things. That kinda engrained fear in him at that early age. I’m working on him, and am very proud of what he has been able to overcome. He will get there some day.

Well, have fun, keep it rolling and know the Father is always watching and listening.

Looks like a fun 1/2 hour. The learning curve for fly fish can be pretty steep. Has you son done in badic spinning set up fishing? Apparently leaches are dangerous and dont spread diseases. But damn, a leach might send me packing too. Or at least bank fishing
@McFlyAngler4 күн бұрын
Yeah leeches aren’t dangerous, now that I think about it, I’ve waded through that river dozens of times alone, and my feet always itch. Haha! I’m sure I’ve gotten tons of leeches on me in the past. Did you mean basic spinning setup? Yes in the past he has used it, but he wants to try and fly fish so, I’m happy to teach him. He is doing well and learning quickly!

You should've released the thread and put the missing dubbing and put the strike indicator since you are sharing a video with an audience. You weren't live, so take advantage of that.

Thank you for making and posting this video. My son and I went fishing in the Mississippi river about 2 months ago and he snagged a rod and reel. The reel was this exact model. It looked like it was in the mud for at least a year. It even had worms inside by the gears. I own many bait caster reels but never cleaned one in so much detail as you show here. This video helped me to thoroughly take it apart, clean it and put it back together. I had to order a few parts, including the shaft, but it is now as good as new. It is very much appreciated.

It's possible, give it a try and let me know how it works for you. Its hard to tell I guess when you tie it onto your line and its casted out far. So if you have a way of checking, maybe casting out near to a friend to check how it rides, then please tell me your findings.

I'm anxious to try it. Nice video. I would think you'd get some false strikes with fish hitting the part above the fly.
@McFlyAngler17 күн бұрын
Thanks! and yes, I would think some false strikes also, However I wouldn't fish it when fish are coming all the way up to the rise, just when I notice many swipes just below the surface where they aren't breaking water. This is perfect for that scenario. But like anything, there will be some random differences in conditions. Ive had many trout strike indicators while nymph fishing, even when I dont see any coming up to the surface prior.

Almost all the rivers around here are fishable. Just need to find public access points. Most overpasses or roads that cross the river are legal to park at, and walk down into the river. Once your in the river (with the exception of a few up far north texas) your legal to wade up and down the river. Just be careful because there are some deep holes occasionally.
