We always tie Caddis in a perched position, and they still appeal to trout. Wouldn’t a splayed wing be more accurate/appealing? The caddis Ive seen on the water have their wings out to the sides, while caddis Ive observed on branches and rocks are resting with their wings back - as you’ve tied it.

Fished this spot yesterday and caught a decent bass and 2 rios from the bridge. Kinda tough with the fly rod but it’s possible.

Awesome! Yeah surprisingly it’s decent fishing here. It is hard with a fly rod but really not too bad.

Thanks for the video and education. Just starting my second year tying and I live in Northern Maine, this time of year the people up here refer to it as fly tying season because there's not much else you can do. Presently it's around zero degrees outside so yeah it's fly tying season inside!..lol...but I think these types of flies will work great for the trophy class brook trout and Atlantic Salmon I fish for...3.5 pb brooktrout so far and last may 36 inch Salmon was hijacked by a huge river otter...but I just ordered some mylar and was looking for patterns to tye and came across your video looks promising thank you very much.

I’m so glad the video was able to give you some ideas for what to tie, and yes at 0 degrees I think I’d be inside tying as well. Welcome to this awesome hobby!

Is this not a sparsely tied back stabber.
@McFlyAngler6 күн бұрын
No, I’d say it’s quite different. In fact the back stabber is closer to a crazy Charlie than this rio getter is to a back stabber in my opinion. But either way, there really is nothing new under the sun. Many flies resemble each other, different names for each come out to define the specific difference of either material used, colors, sparse or densely tied, etc.

Howdy 👋, Picked up my first outfit a week ago. Have been addicted since. I am based out in the Houston area so this was quite literally perfect for me. I am also away in England for a bit so this is a great video for the time being. Am a big fan of your carp video on the flats. Really envious of your casting however I’m sure mine will improve over time. Thinking of heading to a shop or clinic to maybe work on casting with someone more knowledgeable. This creek fishing and stalking is exactly, and I mean exactly, what I want to do.
@taranmehta635611 күн бұрын
Also random thought, but as you mentioned Niel’s 1wt setup- Have you ever seen or used a practice rod as an actual fly fishing rod. TFO micro or the orvis practicaster with a micro fly reel zip tied onto the butt.
@McFlyAngler11 күн бұрын
Hey congrats for the new rod! And yes you will improve over time, casting takes time to perfect, and it’s something I still am working on after all these years. For the carp video, do you mean the one in New Mexico I made 6 or so years ago? On the little lake near the San Juan river? Yeah it’s a cool little creek, I love that kinda fishing also! I haven’t ever used a practice rod for either fishing or practice. I’m sure it could work, like tenkara style maybe? If you ever make it out to San Antonio I would be happy to help give you some lessons on casting and such. Otherwise I think a few places in Houston do lessons…. Not sure how expensive they are though
@taranmehta635610 күн бұрын
@ howdy sir, thank you so much for the reply! It’s been so much fun already just learning about this style of fishing even if I’m not casting. (I have been itching to cast though, weather is quite windy some days so I may invest in the echo mico practice rod. So that I can mess around indoors and improve) Yes sir I believe it is the little lake that you were fishing at, but also have seen the trout rod 20+ minute fight. Really intrigued by carp on the fly, especially in Houston we have some wierd urban spots. The idea that all fish can be caught is what truly captures me, catfish, carp, mullet, bass, panfish, gar. Literally anything. I think especially for carp, they fight so hard, earning their nickname mud marlin, so obviously I want to target them in the future. Also just to add on further, when I was speaking of the practice fly rod and actually fishing with it I should have mentioned the man with the initial idea @COAFFIELDTEAM He ended up creating this ultralight fly combo that was quite interesting to watch. I have been on the hunt looking if there are some clinics or lessons around. And I have had luck as I think there are some private lessons I could book - the site looks outdated but no harm in contacting. Houston has a couple fly stores which I am considering heading to, to just talk with some knowledgeable people, and apparently they have a casting pool. Honestly sir that may be one of the coolest things someone has offered. I absolutely love wetting a line, especially with others. I am currently a college student at Texas A&M and picked up the fly to learn in my free time. If I ever am down in San Antonio, would love to take you up on that offer. Apologies for the long messages, just super interested in fly fishing. wishing you a merry Christmas and happy new year

Hello sir! I've got a question. How exactly does this fly swim when fished? Hook up or down etc Thank you sir!

Hook point down, if you have a super light hook I guess it could turn over but, most streamer hooks have enough weight to keep it stable

@McFlyAngler17 күн бұрын
I agree with your selection as well. I really was weighing between the EHC and the Adams. Ultimately chose the adams, but I now feel the caddis is more versatile as it works great for bass and sunfish as well!
@RT4206917 күн бұрын
@McFlyAngler i figured it would work for sunfish, as they will eat almost anything that can fit in their tiny mouths, but bass? Never knew that. I figured they would want something a bit bigger. But I believe it.

Hey Sean. Nice little jig fly, looks super effective for panfish. If you tie the rubber legs closer behind the bead, stretch them back toward the tail tying them down as you go, you’ll have a smoother body without the bump. This one will definitely be in my box for next season. Thanks for sharing this one with everyone. Enjoy your trip and catch ‘em up! Hope you got or will get your deer.
