There's over 200 bones in the human body, and since Belos wasn't saying anything about running out, it's probably been less than that! But uh, in 400 years, Hunter who's 16 (or at least appears to be, they can be created as adults after all) lasted fairly long? Definitely in the double digits (plus later we see around 50 skulls in the pit I think? I wonder if the pit was kept as a contingency plan in case he ran out of bones...)

@@theredeft5319 obligatory reminder that trauma bonding is real but is not especially healthy and you should be very careful if the foundation of your relationship with someone is based on shared trauma. It can very easily become an extension of said trauma or create codependency or toxic cycles to continue due to that trauma bond. We should be careful when glorifying trauma bonds. Also to keep in mind trauma bonds can also be formed between an abuser and their victim. Such as the dynamic between Hunter and Belos. It's essentially Stockholm syndrome. Which is a form of trauma bonding.

Belos' most powerful weapon is manipulation. He managed to trick an entire realm with the power of persuasion and a couple of tricks, and he manipulated every Grimwalker into doing what he wanted, and when they betrayed him, he just destroyed them and started over. He's a genuinely terrifying antagonist because people like him can manipulate using words alone and cause devastating consequences.

i always thought belos killing and remaking his brother over and over again was a combination of missing his brother and wanting to control him. it reads like taking out his frustrations on his brother with the justification of "saving his soul". holding such strict control over his older brother who we could read as possibly more free thinking, making him younger, lashing out at him, all to have his brother do what he wants him to do. and when he learns the truth, he kills them, and tries again. its so fucked up. it reeks of religious abuse. belos is a fantastic and fascinating villain
@alexschott2092

Fun fact about the memory portraits you see in the background of Belos / Philips' mindscape. What we see in the episode is slightly out of chronological order and many more are obscured by the shadows of the scenes. That didn't stop Owl House fans from trying to chronologically reorganize them through screenshots to get a better grasp of the timeline of major events that convinced Belos to go down this horrific path. Then, right before the series finale aired, Dana posted all the individual memory portraits the crew came up with in high detail and chronological order. There were even several that weren't in the episode itself that provide more insight into the events as well as how Belos perceives them. The pictures themselves start out whole and intact, but after a certain point burn holes similar to those seen when Luz and Amity were in Willow's mindscape to repair her memory portraits become more apparent. The questions is, though, what caused those holes / altered perceptions of Belos' memories in the Demon Realm? Given his outlook and genocidal goals for the inhabitants, it wouldn't surprise me if Belos did this to his own mind to ensure he couldn't see these memories in a different light after a while, preventing any reflections on himself that would cause him to waver in his delusional mission to be the hero that destroys the evil he sees all around him.

The recipe to create a Grimwalker is revealed at the beginning of "Eclipse Lake". There's an open book about it. If you see it carefully, you will see that some ingredients have already been mentioned. Like palistram wood (the wood used to create Palismen) which is the reason why the palistram trees are near extinct; selkidomus scales which is the same creature the Golden Guard wanted Luz and Eda to kill; and there's also the galdorstones which are the things in the Looking Glass Graveyard that amplify all magic except for illusion.

This episode is incredibly good, but haunting. It’s so creepy, so dark, the memories, the lies, the realization, it hurts. The fake mind, the palismen souls haunting them, the child crying and running away turning into a maniacal laughter, the transformation into Belos, the dozens, maybe even hundreds of dead grimwalkers that Belos has created and destroyed over the years, the realization and denial from Luz as she drops to the ground, crying, Hunter having a panic attack, realizing his whole life and identity is a lie, and his so called “uncle” will probably hunt him down, the guilt in Luz’s eyes as she sees Hunter run away. It really hurts

One of my favorite little details here is that Hunter referred to Luz by her name after he comes in at the end. He always called her human before, but now that they have really bonded, and that he is now afraid of Belos and the golden guard persona he calls her by her name. It reminds me a lot of how in Avatar the last airbender Zuko always referred to Aang as the avatar until he joined them. As if he was not really a person to him then. Much like Hunter saw Luz as the annoying human interloper until she opened his eyes to the truth.

Hands down my favorite episode. Belos is so much scarier than I imagined. The curse marks, genocide, the golden graveyard, the creepy palisman monster, the cunning child Belos is so dark. The fact that the child inner self was tricking them from the beginning, as was willing to reveal all that to Hunter knowing he would have to replace him for knowing is chilling. The reveal of the collector was also great. The story told in the pictures is quite rewarding to the fans who have paid attention to the little details we’ve seen about Belos’s past. I also love Luz and Hunter in this episode. Luz is so brotherly to him offering the Owl House for him to stay in. And poor Hunter’s panic attack felt very realistic.

In the opening scene of Eclipse Lake (S2E9) there is an open book which describes what is needed to build a Grimwalker. The ingredients included a Galdorstone, which acts as the heart and power; Palistrom wood; Stonesleeper lungs; Selkidomus scales. Remember Belos sent Hunter to kill a Selkidomus? Maybe hes already building Hunter's replacement.

Belos is a scarily realistic villain. The way he essentially creates a religion through lies, villainises Wild Witches with propaganda and fabricating pretend scenarios, pretending that he can "speak to the Titan" to get people to worship him. He's literally a fascist dictator who's using lies, fear mongering and religion to turn society against vulnerable minorities. Which is also depressingly relevant given the current rise of fascism in the US and the Right Wing's violent attacks on queer people, especially those that are trans. Whether it's queerphobia, racism or a prejudice against witches it's always the same type of irrational hatred with a different branding and it's always the same violent lunatics that are perpetuating it so they can maintain their authority above everyone else. This does make Belos the perfect villain for the Owl House though, with this shows amazing diversity, queer representation and bisexual Afro Latina protagonist. Belos goes against everything this show stands for and while Luz came to the Boiling Isles and saw the beauty in it, Belos holds on to his unjustifiable hatred. Luz is the perfect protagonist for this story and Belos is the perfect antagonist to challenge her.

re: 2nd question: I think Philip's continual recreation of Hunter over and over again is that he is trying to "resurrect" his brother, but his brother as he USED to be before he was 'corrupted' by the witches. So each time, he hopes Hunter will stay loyal to their original aspirations, but each time, he realizes he has failed, the newest version "falls" into corruption again, and so Philip must destroy it and try once again. One of these times, Philip thinks, he will succeed and have his brother back as they used to be.

Oh yes, this is definitely my favourite s2 ep! With most scary villains the more u know abt them the less scary they r. With Belos it's all the opposite: the more u find out abt him, the more terrified of what he's capable of u become. But he also is a really interesting character, 1 of my favourites actually. Belos is constantly trapped in his trauma, that being a condition he grew up in and that his brother left him. And he's unable to process that trauma. Partially because he doesn't want to, and partially because he can't due to what he himself has done with it. A reality vs fantasy is an important theme in TOH, and Belos basically made up a reality in which he's the victim and everyone else is the bad guy. That's why he wants to kill all witches (because as u said he blames his brother's death onto them) and that's why he creates more and more grimwalkers (because he wants his brother back, but Belos wants HIS version of his brother back, and that version simply never existed). And that is why Belos will never achieve his goal. Even if he destroys the entire demon realm, he'll switch his hatred to smth else. All to silence his own sense of guilt. And I think there's smth poetic abt the scariest thing in the demon realm being another human (poetic and extra terrifying).

This episode has always been one of the scariest in the show. The Grimwalker lore and revelations only get worse from here. And everything you find out is a punch to the gut. Belos followed his brother to a world of witches, "lost him" (the reality being so much darker), and decided to wreak havoc on this world instead of devoting his time to getting home and permanently severing the portal. He could have just found a way to leave and sealed it off, but he doesn't. He *wants* to hurt the witches living here, to the point of MUTILATING HIS EARS to better fit and manipulate them as well as consuming the life force and souls of palisman to extend his life. He USES A FORM OF MAGIC! Even if it's not *their* magic, he's still become the very thing he despises and *WORSE*. Belos is a true monster, which only makes the reveal of the palisman souls that much worse. They manifest that way after all the torture they endure, try to fight back, only to terrify Luz and Hunter right into Belos' arms. The reveal of the REAL monster gives me chills every time, as do the rotten shells of the other Golden Guard.

Eclipse Lake showed a book on how to make a Grimwalker, with ingredients included. A Galdorstone-like the kind Gus found-as its heart, Palistrom wood as its keratin, Stonesleeper lungs as its own lungs, and the scales of a Selkidomus as its skin. Hunter’s debut episode, Separate Tides, showed him hunting a Selkidomus on Belos’ orders. Belos was already planning to make another Grimwalker to replace Hunter while he was still perfectly loyal, and he sent Hunter to go do the shopping for his own replacement’s skin. Absolutely demented.

He also leapt straight out of the Boiling Sea without actually boiling himself. Our boy is definitely not human! Or… well… a witch.

It truly really shows how frightening Belos's ambitions were and just far he himself was willing to basically purge ALL of the witches in the Isles regardless of the passing of time. Belos's even said back in "Elsewhere And Elsewhen" ' "I just NEED to live long enough to see this through" '.

Just as an fyi a grimmwalker was something that was left in background details in some previous episodes with a lot of the ingrediants being from previous episodes such as the gaulder stones(through the looking glass ruins) and Silkydomus scales (seen shen we first see hunter in s2e1)

I ain’t gonna lie I look at Belos face reveal so different after I watched this episode. Like at first glance we were probably “maybe he’s actually a nice guy and he has a reason for being evil like maybe a witch killed his brother” NAH, he just a selfish evil monster. Bro this whole episode to me was just wild, like this just might be my favourite episode in this entire series

Im not sure if you guys caught this, but in the earlier episode Eclipse Lake where we are shown a book open of Belos' desk near the beginning and it shows the ingredients list to make a grimwalker which had a picture that resembles Hunter.

This entire observance of Belos’ mind is a definite wake up call for Hunter after being fed so many lies about who he is and where his fate would lead once Belos himself succeeds in his selfish goal. He’ll have no use for him after all that.

Grimwalkers are actually mentionned in S2 Ep9 "Eclipse Lake" in a book we see at the start of the episode. I won't spoil anything, but since it's an episode you already watched, I thought I could mention it.

You guys actually spent a good deal of time looking at the recipe for a Grimwalker and theorizing what it could be in a previous episode. I would also suggest really thinking about the name (*grim* - *walker*), what Belos said, and what we currently know about Belos. "It hurts every time he chooses to betray me." "Of all the Grimwalkers, you looked the most like him." "I will stop at nothing to save humanity from evil." From what we see of his life, it seems like Philip cared about his brother more than anyone else.
