Fun fact: Flora D'splora is a parody of Dora the Explorer, from her purple monkey Palisman to her actress being the same as Dora's mom.

It was kind of given. You almost expect a cheap "interactive" moment to disrupt the flow of the episode (per the fact that _Dora the Explorer_ takes place inside a preschool child's computer game that actively interrupts itself to routinely engage the child audience/break the 4th wall, even if it low key insults the intelligence of older viewers whenever doing so) or a "Come on, Vamanos!" / "We Did It!" from Flora.

"I thought I was the only one who used glyphs. It took years to find them. Almost as if the world wanted to hide them from me." It's very interesting to compare this sentence with Luz's experience considering the Isles practically gave her all of the glyphs on a silver platter. *Alluding to spoilers from the finale* It also makes so much sense now that we know what we know about why Luz was able to discover all those glyphs so quickly.
@patzy0299 Жыл бұрын
I believed it's because The Titan himself sensed Belos true dark intentions while with Luz he sensed pure intentions thus favoring her and granting her knowledge of the glyphs
@emilyprice178 Жыл бұрын
@@patzy0299 Also Luz starts finding the glyphs after she befriends King. Luz finding the light glyph happens right after she makes up with King after she didn't give his demon lessons much attention due to her hyperfocus on magic, and after she had been protecting him from the Owl Beast. It makes sense that after seeing Luz being physically protective of King, and also recognising that she was wrong to be dismissive of his attempts to connect with her through his demon lessons, that the Titan deemed Luz trustworthy.

I also love that it so neatly answers a lot of previous questions we had about why Belos acted the way he did: he needed certain things to play out in a certain way to ensure that Lilith and Luz went back in time so that the present timeline matched up with what he remembered from his own past.

@@SteveMND I view it more as the scene from Harry Potter where he realized he was the one who played out the part of saving himself. He didn't intentionally setup the time travel he just diligently played out what had already happened. Ie: setting up Luz and Lilith to time travel. Or, more to the point. In the owl house's time travel no one has free will to change the past because it already happened and that causes the future that caused it.

The reveal at the end that Phillip is Belos is one of the best "twists" in the series. The best thing is that it works either way for the viewer. Ah, I love a good time-travel story! Philip remembered meeting these two, but it wasn't until he first met Lilith _as_ Belos that he realized who SHE actually was, and how he knew he had to make sure that Lilith and Luz became friends... because if she didn't, then Luz would have never have gone back in time in order to have taught him that last glyph that he needed. That neatly makes some of the apparent plot holes we saw before make more sense, as Belos couldn't just put all his might out there: he needed to make sure that things like Eda and Lilith and Luz all worked towards the goal of going back in time to meet Philip in the first place. He HAD to let Lilith rise through the ranks with the promise of a cure for her sister, and he HAD to let Eda and Lilith off at the last moment at the petrifaction ceremony, and he's HAD to conveniently allow the Owl House to stay mostly unhassled. But once all the time-travel shenanigans have happened-both in the past as WELL as the present-the kid gloves can come off.

This episode is really great at demonstrating with subtle clues how time works in this world regarding time travel. It's a continuous flow where what you will do in the past has already happened in the present, this is first shown on a small scale with Lilith kicking herself. But it's also shown on a longer time scale with the warriors in the distant past, where the three eyed warrior is wearing a helmet but in the present his remains don't and his skull is tilted to the side, and when they are in the Deadwardian era his remains are still wearing the helmet and looking straight forward until Luz takes the helmet and tilts the skull, thus leaving it in the state that is seen in the present.

The most important lore reveal of this episode is that Belos' scar/crooked nose came from Lilith punching him in the face 400 years ago. And uh... I think he did stay mad. I genuinely think that most of what happened in Lilith's life was a result of Belos having a personal grudge against her. And to think, she spent so much of her life directly under his control and trying to get his approval... the subtext here is so disturbing to me. The fact she realizes Philip is lying because his tactics are "uncomfortably familiar"... but she doesn't even know how right she is.

The creepy thing about Philip keeping "trophies" like Blue Fang's tooth and Palisman reminds me of Voldemort's habits as a child that followed him into adulthood. When he bullied kids or defeated powerful witches/wizards, he made it a point to take belongings that were precious to them. And like Philip he horded them as though they were some sort of twisted treasure that "proved" his accomplishments.

Looking back I see how the question Amity asked about how belos said he "can't wait to meet you" after they already met makes me wonder how that fit into play when they first met for Luz's timeline compared to through Belos's eyes having already met Luz. We see how he maybe chose to influence Lilith because of this interaction but I wonder if he knew that Luz could turn Lilith to her side and that's why he kept making Lilith prove herself to the point she threatened Luz for Eda.

3:40 Why was I today years old when I realized that Flora Desplora is just grown up and Boiling Isles-ified Dora the Explorer. She's got the brown chin length bob, the purple shirt and orange shorts, a little lavender coloured tool/companion, a love of adventure....... literally Dora. Which makes sense actually, since way back in the first episode Eda said all the stories and fantasies in the human realm are a result of things leaking through from the Boiling Isles.
@TherealRNOwwfpooh Жыл бұрын
Plus, her monkey palisman is a callback to Boots (although in _Dora the Explorer_ Boots is light blue & can communicate on a human level, as can all of the animals & creatures Dora interacts with), which is also the nickname Ed gave to Amity when the latter starts talking about wanting to prove herself an awesome girlfriend to Luz ("As Luz's girlfriend..." "We get it, Boots."), although the palismen's particular color is reminiscent of Dora's sentient Backpack (where Map & Dora's other essentials are stored when not in use).

A massively important episode for story and lore especially in regards to answering some big mysteries about Belos, as well as the amazing return of our aro/ace icon Lilith and finally getting to meet the last Clawthorne Dell. Getting to see Deadwardian Era Boiling Isles is a lot of fun too. While it's historically been really easy to mess up time travel plots I think this episode does the idea justice and also manages to use it's premise to incorporate some really funny jokes that it wouldn't have been able to do as effectively otherwise like the Viking reveling himself to death and Luz finding his skeleton or Lilith kicking her past self in the head. I have say that my favourite part of this episode is the return of Lilith. It's been 8 episodes since we've seen her and getting to see how much she's healed since then is really nice. It's cool how she's wearing her glasses and is letting her hair get a little curly again, it feels like a visual representation of her returning to her routes after going home and reconnecting with her parents. She's being herself again after so long of living up to the Emperor's Coven's expectations and is even indulging in her own hobbies. Watching her get excited about Deadwardian history and ballisters is really adorable but we see in this episode with the inclusion of Flora Desplora that she is still learning to ignore bullies who judge you for your special interests which is never not hard to do. By the end of the episode we see her learn to ignore the pressure to appeal to others and to just be herself and who better than Luz to help her do that. Speaking of Luz, her and Lilith has to be one of the best and most underrated teams in the whole show, a nerdy, queer niece and aunt duo travelling through time and I just love their interactions. A line from Lilith that especially sticks out to me in this episode is when she asks herself if she's broken, which from what I understand is something that a lot of aromatic and/or aesexul people ask themselves because society likes to pressure us into thinking that love and sex are an inevitability of life. This of course isn't true because aro/ace people do exist and you don't need a romantic partner in you life to be happy and anyone who says otherwise has a narrow view of the world. Aro/ace people are sometimes even discriminated against by other queer people because of this and it's really gross when others decide to sexualize people who have no interest in anything sexual, it feels borderline predatory and it's why I get so uncomfortable with people who do it to Lilith. Lilith being aro/ace, I can imagine this line really connecting with those people and I like how she tells herself off in the reflection of her glasses, like she won the internal struggle against herself. So Luz gets to finally the other human has found the demon realm long before she did and it turns out Philip is a massive jerk which is devastating news for her. And not only was he a jerk who manipulated her into helping him find the Collector mirror, but also it's actually Belos and she accidentally taught him the light spell he needed which is going to be especially devastating for Luz going forward. While the twist that Philip has always been Belos wasn't really surprising it was still an effective reveal that opens up a lot of other questions about Belos as a character. Having our main villain in our show about witches and magic be a literal 16th Centuy Puritan does make a lot of sense, especially with how inclusive this show is with it's main cast. Of course the old white man from centuries ago is going to be an asshole, it would be weird to expect anything else lol. The journal entries are the heroes that modern fascists want you to think the Colonizers were, and then Philip in person are the villains that they actually were. Not only does this episode have an amazing A plot with a bombshell of an ending but it also has an emotionally powerful B plot with Eda getting to reunite her dad. We finally get to meet Dell and he seems like a pretty chill guy. It's sad watching Eda be so guilty about accidentally attacking him because of the curse that she doesn't want to confront him but she eventually relents and confronts her fears head on. This is one of the most underrated scenes in the show and it's beautifully handled. All this time he was never mad at her because it wasn't her fault, but she was still mad at herself and continues to blame herself even in this conversation. He's able to give the reassurance she needs however, which I imagine is a massive weight of her shoulders and with that Eda has been able to reconnect with her entire family. First Lilith, then Gwendolyn and now Dell. We also get a Bar Queen name drop and learn that Dell has been helping her replenish the forest that Belos has been chopping down for his own appetite. There's also the beautiful reveal of Owlbert's origins, and how Dell and Eda has carved him together which always causes me to tear up. One more thing I have to mention is that I love how King has been accepted as part of the Clawthorne family. He's never refer to as adopted, Dell calls King his grandson and King asks Gwendolyn if he gets to meet his grandpa which she never questions. It's really nice and continues the strong found family themes of this entire show, that your family isn't always the people you start with but the people who love and accept you as yourself. Your strongest bonds are the people you choose, that's family. All around love this episode, the fun Luz and Lilith team up, the emotional Eda and Dell reunion and the story bombshell of the Philip is Belos reveal.
@TherealRNOwwfpooh Жыл бұрын
Aside from King as the Clawthrone grandson (adopted), Dell may be the last Clawthorne alive we meet (bearing one exception with a recognizably annoying voice whom a certain plant witch seems enamored with), however the lore deepens as the show progresses & another non-binary character further bridges the connection between the Boiling Isles, the brothers Wittebane, and Luz's human home in Gravesfield, Connecticut.

Love her long awaited return in this episode, seeing her happier and being able to indulge in her special interests is nice. I like how she's wearing her glasses and letting her hair grow curly as well after returning home and reconnecting with her mum, it's like when she was young and feels like she's returned to her routes and is being herself again. Also as someone who is queer but isn't aro and/or ace but has friends who are, the "am I broken?" line sounds like it would hit especially hard . There's aro/ace people who feel like this because our society has pushed the idea that romance and intimate attraction are an inevitable part of life which just isn't true because aro/ace people exist and also there's a lot of people don't need a partner to be happy. Lilith is awesome and is one of my favorite characters and I love her team up with Luz in this episode.

@@MattTOB618 It doesn't really need mentioning. It's pretty obvious: 1. Her monkey palisman is a callback to Boots, although its purple color is similar to Dora's sentient Backpack. 3. Flora patronizes Lilith as if Lilith were still a child (much in the same manner which older viewers feel the "interactive" 4th wall breaks in preschool shows actively insult their intelligence, as if these shows think its intended kid audience is too stupid to pick up on anything not blatantly spelled out for them). 4. Luz has questions about Flora's name, because Luz is bilingual also (she's a Latina herself [albeit, of Puerto Rico descent], so both her & her mother Camilla can speak both English as well as Spanish fluently), which means that she'd be able to directly understand the Spanish Flora would say if she had spoken any (to that end, you almost expect Flora to say either "Come on, Vamanos", "We Did It", or if coming across the fox palisman of Raine Whispers, "Swiper, No Swiping").

@@ac3.ofspad3s How would I know if they realized it or not? The similar names & blatant character design is a dead-giveaway.

*clears throat* It is entirely possible that Belos has been deliberately not catching Eda because he knew this had to happen, and now that it has he can take the kid gloves off.

Did Belos even NEED The Collector? He seemed to already been doing good without him Teleportation spell, plans for the Grimwalker, you can see designs for a staff at the end there, and with him feeding off Palisman souls, he’d last a while

I guess all he needed was the draining spell from the collector,cause your right,he didn't need the collector at all for the other things

I actually missed this episode when it first aired, pretty confusing when it was referenced later on

you guys should watch yellowjackets!! 10/10 show with such an incredible story that you see a glimpse of in the first episode but have no idea what it means or how they ended up there, but seeing it all unravel is so cool to see and amazing looking into it all psychologically (which is why i think montanna esp would like it! also: lesbians!) TO PREFACE: it is live action, it can be GRAPHIC, but it is genuinely my favorite show and has been for months. Not going to spoil too much, but it follows the yellow jacket soccer team on their way to the national tournament when things go very very wrong. So many characters handle things so many different ways and its so cool to see them come together or clash despite their unifying goal of surviving.

The butterfly effect is when doing something in the past Ex: Kicking a rock can lead to something bigger Ex: Volcano erupting. Lilith said: And we need to be careful of the BLOOD-FLY effect

What's crazy abt Eda feeling the guilt of scarring her father is the fact her sister seems to not feel any guilt for her father's accident
