Beloved KPIX Sports Anchor Wayne Walker Remembered

Wayne Walker was one of the most popular people in the history of television in the Bay Area. On Friday, Walker died from complications of a disease linked to the game he played and loved. (5-19-17)

Man, Wayne Walker was THE face of SF Bay Area sports in the 80s! He was everywhere and talked to everyone! Knowledgeable, funny, knew how to "find the funny" in whatever the situation was.

He also did games on The NFL on CBS. I remember watching him doing the San Francisco 49ers, Buffalo Bills game at Orchard Park, New York.

RIP Wayne..met him in 1980 at St. Francis hospital in San Francisco, He was there to check out the sports medicine. Wayne was class act. My favorite quote by him about Joe Montana..Joe is as cool as the other side of the pillow...classic..thank you Wayne Walker..

Wayne worksd at WJBK-TV2 in Detroit when still playing football fot the Lions in the 60s and early 70s.. IN the summer he did sports and also handled "Baseball Scoreboard" after the Saturday afternoon telecast of the Detroit Tiger Games. He also for a few years ran a Steakhouse in the New Centre area of Detroit called "Wayne Walkers Steakhouse." He was also loved in Detroit and cut his teeth in the broadcasting business long before he did his shtick in San Francisco. He loathed the 49ers when playing for the Lions and Monte Stickles of the 49ers and he were bitter foes on the field, then great friends. He was well loved in Detroit too and a fan favorite. Rest in peace #55...you are not forgotten in the Motor City.

A lifelong resident from Cupertino who enjoyed Wayne on KPIX. He was so easy- going on screen and it seemed the 49ers players and staff respected him. My favorite recall from his television career was challenges he would perform. These segments including one where he was running up a steep street in San Francisco and trying to beat a cable car. I was too young to see Wayne play football and feel fortunate to view his talents on the television and radio during my late teens and into my 20's. My thoughts and prayers to his family and friends. RIP Mr. Walker.

He died from football related head injuries. He knew it. Still, Wayne said he wouldn’t do it any other way. I was on channel 5 news twice, but never with Wayne. They always sent the weekend guy to see me.

I remember Wayne playing for the Lions. Great linebacker and can still visualize his swaying arms when he kicked as a place kicker.

He was always quick and witty, I thought, having lived in SJ for 24 years. Sad that it was Parkinson's, but I recall suspecting a health issue. I was living in Washington then but Dad tuned in. That was 94 or so. Great guy. RIP
