haha tom collects sodas and drug store bottles, and I (jake) collect the tiny bottles.. especially the ones with embossing on them.. idk just something about the huge amount of manufacturing that goes into one of these tiny little bottles.. sometimes i wonder if the bottle cost more to produce than the contents inside it.. and they dont take up a lot of space which is awesome bc my shelf is literally starting to buckle under the weight. ha, anyways! thanks for watching and commenting. p.s. if you want to see the coolest small bottle google "hood's pills cures liver ills" its on of the most embossed bottles ive ever seen and its about the size of a 50 cent piece.. its amazing

yeeeaaah.. id prefer to just dig the pits from the 1800s, but to be completely honest, ive under estimated the stuff you can find in some of the early 20th century pits. they always seem to have a lot more variety of stuff in them.. the bottles arent AS cool, but, when you dig one thats a little newer, we tend to come across random stuff like marbles and bakelite pipes and pens.. and idk, its just so rare to come across some of that stuff in super early pits, at least in this area.. anyways! like always, thank you for watching and always commenting on our videos! have a great rest of your day/night

@@ShirleySwedberg-tt2cc I'm not a youngun, my courage back in the mid to late 70's almost got me killed several times. Joining the Marine Corps in the mid 80's saved me, it taught me discipline and was the best thing I ever did to forward myself. Those lessons I learned have helped me throughout my life in ways I will never really understand, I just know they did when I compare myself to others I grew up with. My believe in the Lord even back then was the difference, I think. Everyone needs a solid base to rely on, I'm very lucky I had one.

In reference to the Blue Willow tea/coffee cup you found ... To be a true "Blue Willow" pattern, it must have the following elements: pagoda, apple tree, bridge, willow tree, fence, cottage on island and a pair of turtle doves. "The Legend of the Blue Willow" (The Blue Willow plate.) Long ago, in the days when China was ruled by emperors, a Chinese manderin,Tso Ling, lived in the magnificent pagoda under the branches of the apple tree on the right of the bridge, over which droops the famous willow tree, and in front of which is seen the graceful lines of the fence. Tso Ling was the father of a beautiful girl, Kwang-se, who was the promised bride of an old but wealthy merchant. The girl, however, fell in love with Chang, her father's clerk. The lovers eloped across the sea to the cottage on the island. The mandarin pursued and caught the lovers and was about to have them killed when the gods transformed them into a pair of turtle doves. These are the doves seen gazing into each other's eyes at the top of the design on the plates. Blue Willow China, in its present form originated in the United Kingdom (England) in 1790 by Thomas Turner at Caughley Pottery Works in Shropshire. A lengthy and old Staffordshire poem of the pattern concludes with the verse: "In the oft quoted plate two birds are perceived, High in the heaven above: These are the spirits of Chang and Kwang-se, A twin pair forever in love".

The ode to chicken Joe:-) To be song to that old country tune, The Green, Green Grass of Home. Now every time your out there digging you'll have that song going thru your head. Yee-Haa! I've been in the same situation. I've been told that the bottling works would often get their competitors bottles returned. Being it was illegal to use someone else's bottles they would simply destroy/discard them. Another story I've been told is that during prohibition it was illegal in some places to have empty bottles around that could be used to hold moonshine, thus resulting in the tops being knocked off. Thanks for watching!

There's a public park with excellent hiking/biking trails near me with a seasonal creek through it. The creek sits at the bottom of a hill of an old farm. Clearly they dumped their trash there before it was a park and I decided to climb down to it last summer (there's a bridge over it for the trail). I pulled out loads of old bottles right on top without much digging at all. After I cleaned them up I posted a photo of my finds on FB - most were 1950s-70s. And a friend of mine who is an anthropologist absolutely ripped me a new one! He said people like me are the reason history is lost and only the experts should be digging that stuff up. We're talking 7up bottles from the 70s and shoe polish jars from the 50s. I was hurt but also angry! I mean, seriously?? If we listened to him, no one should even pick up litter! 🙄

It strikes me that with the exception of beer and alcohol bottles, most of the bottles of the time seem rather small. When bottles were perhaps more difficult to make, why didn’t they make bottles bigger so they didn’t have to make as many? Was it just a marketing thing or was there another reason for that? Home canning was certainly larger than those commercial little pickle and water bottles. Maybe the larger bottles broke more easily?
@BelowthePlains2 жыл бұрын
