This brings back memories of a time in the late 1989s my buddy had an inground pool installed. Turns out that exact site was a school house in the 1700s. All kinds of ink wells and the absolute gamete of great old bottles came out the ground. Just so happens to be in Millville nj. Home of many glass factories including the famous wheaton glass factory.

I have dug in hundreds of old bottle dumps and will say this...the excavator does ok but without rare Poisons, bitters and historical flasks popping up, not even close to being worth it. Excavator digging in historic dumps should be illegal due to the destruction of historical artifacts. Just a opinion. 👍

I'm sure the neighbors would have loved it even more if the bottles were hand-dug. The noise and dirt and dust blowing around get old real quick.

First bottle I ever found was a Hugh Forsythe Frontenac KS Hutchison Bottle. I found it 2ft deep digging under my deck. There are only 2 other known examples and I am from Frontenac and donated the bottle to the museum. The city historians had absolutely know idea there was a bottling company in Frontenac then and actually argued with me when i told them what I had. My bottle was a aqua color and had the wire around the neck and the cork, its near perfect other than dirty. I live in one of the oldest homes in town and it was once a 1 room coal miners house, I am hoping to do some more digging come spring and find more.

I would love to see the process from start to finish. How you determine the location (probing, detecting, divining?) and then how you protect yourself and the landowner. You and your team are obviously good at all of that, and if more landowners felt safe allowing this sort of exploration who knows how many treasures might see the light of day again.

oh yeah we know.. and i feel like we've made a ton of improvements since we first started filming and i still think its not good enough.. but we've bought some better gear to help. just seems like its literally the worst kind of conditions: filming in sunlight ruins the colors, filming in wind ruins the audio, digging with one hand and filming with the other, the lighting changes during the courser of a day, looking into a dark hole when standing in light makes it hard to see everything in the shadow, dirt or worse mud too deal with... ive had to learn alot about cameras and film making, i honestly thought it would be just as easy as pointing my phone at what im doing but its just way more complicated... haha you get it. thanks for watching and always commenting

Would have liked to see more in-pit excavation than bucket dumping, but it was still enjoyable to watch nonetheless. Shame more intact bottles weren't found. Superb job on running the machine. I'm guessing you did some of that for a company at some point or still doing it?

You may have covered a lot more area by digging like this but the machine is very noisy/annoying!! I like your videos where you use a shovel/ trowel to find things. I agree. If you’re going to upend what could be a historical site, metal detecting and documenting would make your work more like archaeology and less like tomb raiding. I’m watching, liking and I’ve subscribed and enjoy it all but sometimes I cringe when I think about how future archaeologists will not be pleased. Also just my opinion…

Also no pharmacy bottles. Jake now I know who I've been by texting to. Who was the other person besides Tom that was working with you. How far away were you from your base? I think I like watching you doing the back breaking work , because we see everything that's coming out of the hole not just a random bottle here and there. Take care guys and be safe. ✌

well i guess its hard to say.. we rarely ever dig like this, it was just a rushed situation. i believe they were planning on tearing it up anyways, we didnt really have the time, and we didnt want them to smash thru it and hall it off to a landfill like we've seen happen so many times.. if we get an excavator we usually just dig next to the pit, and then pull the pit into the hole we dug, so we dont break anything.. but it would surprise you how few bottles actually break, the excavator is surprisingly gentle with them..

The excavator saved time but potential of destruction of the quarry in the process seems unnecessary and risky. Senseless destruction.

Awesome videos you make! You aren't to worried about breaking them with the excavator? Do you often get excavators to dig the pits?

it all depends. but the super common ones are probably $50-150 and some of the rarer ones can go for up to $2-5k.. havent really seen any go for more than that. the older ones are usually worth more, and if you find one that there are no known examples of, id say you are probably looking 4-5k.. its complicated, but a good way to find out is just to check out what they sold for on ebay.. but that isnt always the case. one time i came across a $2k hutch that was priced at $20... it had already been sold :( thanks for watching!!

You can do a lot with the broken glass with an artisan. They make beautiful pictures with the pieces and you can sell the broken pieces in boxes.

yeah that place was really weird.. there was a creek on the edge of the property and supposedly it was full of trash into the 1980s, and we were thinking they just covered some of it with diry and leveled off the property.. it was a pretty strange place to dig. thanks for watching

do you cut the tops off the ,embossed or interesting ,broken topped bottles and sell them as drinking glasses. They would still be worth something.
