10 years ago my son and his school friends all aged 17 went to Spain for 7 days, they all met up in the one room to organise their night out, next thing a bang at the door police came in searched them and took roughly £50 off each of them. I tried to find out why and to this day it has never been clarified. They all went to Poland the following year and had a blast.

I didnt get a balcony or even a window when I stayed there. As it was my first time going solo after losing my husband I didn't complain. I lived in Spain at the time and went out of season. I wouldn't stand for it now 20 years later

I’m a single person and get the same treatment everywhere I go. As a single person I pay the single supplement but get the worst room in the hotels. I put up with it for a few trips then thought enough is enough, if I’m paying more than others then I want a decent room. It doesn’t always work but on some occasions I was upgraded but you do have to complain.

Unfortunately this happens a lot with single travellers. They think they can just shove you anywhere. I have had recurring problems with this. Honestly, in the situation you found yourself in, I would actually have walked out and run a credit card chargeback.

He has no right to question your word, he’s supposed to be a “professional” & should do his best too make you feel welcomed & valued but that doesn’t happen anymore so I hope they get a drop in customers & a lot of bad reviews, I’d plaster this on every site available out there. I stayed at a 4* hotel Tenerife ..my room was booked as double room with garden views ..what I got was a tiny room bang next to the pool and the outside bar .. single bed no wardrobe just a clothes rail couldn’t swing a cat in bathroom and the room was so dingy I’d have had to have had the lights on day n night ... can you imagine noise all day/ night being next to pool n bar ... and food was disgusting .. I was 5 hours trying to get another room they said all hotel is booked up .eventually got a lovely room 5* I’d say but the food was still crap and the service was diabolical ....it’s put me off Tenerife altogether .....

Find a hotel based on customer review not stars. Contact them email etc, book them and print it all out, make sure you can book flights too. Cut out the middle its no hassle at all

Whenever possible, always book directly with the hotel. This way your contract is directly with the hotel and not the middle man.

Probably thought that as you were English you would just accept:it, the price doesn't reflect a shoebox, single bed etc. No customer care so as you said would not recommend as they seem to be money grabbing. No food hygiene absolutely disgusting.

How shocking....have passed the Belroy on my walks into the old town and thought it might be somewhere to try but based on this review, I will give it a wide berth. The Sol Pelicanos has some issues with the lifts and the soap/shampoo dispensers are not always topped up (I bring my own anyway) but as it is classed as a 3 star I would have expected significantly worse conditions than you had at the Belroy. Many thanks for this valuable insight

It has been mentioned already that the booking form should be more specific. Personally I would not be wasting my breath with the receptionist, I would insist on speaking with the Manager. If he was the Manager best to arrange a refund from the booking agency and walk out. I’ve had issues sometimes with rooms that I have been given as a solo traveller, and mostly it gets resolved for a better room if hotel not full. His attitude was disgusting.

A couple of problems here which I have experienced and heard from others. The booking agents we use, some of them don’t pay the hotels until way after you stayed, some say to hotels after you book your double room we are not paying that for the room and try to get price down. Also booking agents buy rooms off other booking agents that have booked and bought rooms in blocks with conditions that your agent hasn’t checked. Also the last thing to add is that some in Spain hate the British for whatever reasons and that can get in the way of things.

Hi Paul sorry to hear of your experience at the Belroy Hotel, it's shocking that they put you in a room you never booked and then try to charge you extra for that room. That single room isn't worth anything close to 100 Euros in my mind. I have stayed in this Hotel last year and can only say positive things about it. The receptionist was way out of order. I only wished you could have had the same experience we had. After watching your blog today I will not be going back there again.

The hotel for some went through a Spanish travel agency as a third party not surprised things go wrong, either way there no excuse for the way they treat people this had nothing to do with me, it should be between the agencies and the hotel once you have booked

May be the receptionist/ manager is on the take. His little scam on the side. €12 For each booking. Most would not bother. You did however and quite rightly so. Great vlog keep on with your quality content love it. I do think the hotel should be reported for food hygiene breaches. Disgraceful actions. It could result in serious injury and upset.

I heard stories about that type of problem with theSpanish hotels, one of which was on the Island of tenerife where the hotel reception demanded an additional €18 per day for the drink of water or any drink at the restaurant after booking 7 day stay with food included. somehow, during the booking, the hotel web page failed to mention that information (the food is included but not the water) to the prospective customer. The hotel also had no refund policy after the booking.

Sorry to have to disagree with you Paul.You say that you booked a twin or double room with balcony half board for one person. Your voucher states your booking is for a standard room with half board for 1 person. Your voucher shown at 11.36 on your video does not state twin or double room with balcony.It states a standard room for 1 person. Standard rooms are the cheapest room category in most hotels, and in many hotels in Spain sandard rooms for 1 person do not have a balcony. The receptionist gave you the correct category room that was shown on your voucher. Wherever the mistake was made it wasn't the receptionist's fault. Perhaps booking sites should make it clear when a person is booking a room in a sun destination whether the room has a balcony or not. Keep up the great videos.

I'm sorry but your making comments on something you know nothing about whether the voucher states standard room for 1 person like all my hotel vouchers state you don't know what that voucher means unless you work for that travel agent and can confirm that the voucher is wrong, as I said in the video the travel agent confirmed that I had booked a double room with balcony so end of, I know what I booked and paid for which was confirmed by the the relevant people involved. they were trying to pull a fast one again confirmed by previous reviews left on Tripadvisor they seem to make a habit of trying to charge more once the client arrives

It's similar to our experience at the Brisas Xmas eve. Spanish owned and the rudest staff I've ever come across. Absolutely ruined our Xmas. I'll never stay at brisas never again. I received compensation from the airline but no amount could make up for staff who just had no customer care training. Thanks for highlighting the bad staff at the Belroy. I'll give that a very wide berth

I can tell you from previously working as a chef for 3.5 years (including in a Hilton branch) .. you'd probably never eat food from a hotel or restaurant again if you knew some of the things that go on. The fish/steak 'contamination' issue would seem completely insignificant 😂 You're right about the main issue of course.

I always have found with Spanish hotels, their reception and staff are arrogant and surly and will do their utmost to fob you off. You really have to double check before booking and sometimes it's pot luck with each hotel and they have very poor hygiene standards. And as for the food, Comida Espanola muy horrible! 🇪🇸 😵

Does your written confirmation actually state a "Double or Twin" bedded room? As the part you have shown only states a "Standard Room" for 1 Adult. That could actually mean just a single bed for 1 person. I'm not trying to be devils advocate but unless your confirmation clearly states that you have booked a Double or Twin room with Balcony, then actually, you may well have been given what your booking agency have booked for you. I'd also think that it might be an issue with the booking agent, as from from I could gather, they paid over an extra charge to get you the room you believed you had booked. I know many agencies who would certainly not pay an extra charge if they knew they had booked correctly. It does rather look to me as if your booking agency have made an error. However, if you have, in writing, a confirmation that clearly states that you had booked a Double or Twin room with balcony then there's no question about it. I'm assuming that you booked with an ABTA agency? Legally the contract for the booking of the room is between the agency and the hotel, so you are right in assuming that it's not your place to have to deal with it on the spot. But, your complaint to the hotel ought to have been dealt with more politely. It does not sound a great place. On the basis that the booking agency is at fault, and it really does look like that to me. The you can make a claim for distress (in that I mean the fact that things did not run smoothly and you wasted your own time having to deal with the issue) against the agency and have ABTA to fall back on. If it was a package booking, including a flight, then you'd have both ABTA and ATOL to fall back on. (It's illegal to sell a package including a flight without being a member of ATOL here in the UK. Being a member of ABTA is optional, although advised. Perhaps I should have mentioned at the start, I used to own a British based Travel Company.

The agent confirmation is very vague and doesn't clearly say a double/twin room so despite what the agent said the booking with the hotel may have been a single. Having said that it was daft of the check-in staff not to waive the small difference and just move you straightaway when you raised the issue

The first room was very small ☹️ The room you did eventually get after being ripped off looked good with the balcony but what an unnecessary palaver. Their loss, that will be an expensive £12 for them. Don't know why one of these hotel's don't gear up for single people, sure there's a market for travellers looking for decent accommodation. Better luck on the next one👍
