Bering pto driven, the Belsaw mill was designed with the farmer in mind. It made it affordable for them to build barns, garages and storage sheds, hog houses and fences. It was also designed as a one man mill with the arbor powered from the opposing side and all access to the log and lumber is attained without crossing the drive shaft. They could be mounted on your own frame, on truck bedframes, wooden frames or even on bar joists like this one here.

I happen to own a Bellsaw. Ours is mounted on a wood frame. Ive often thought of using a larger circle mill's mandrel so i could tin a 52 inch blade. However the retaining nut would be turning the wrong direction and not stay tight. So It would need to become a left hand mill to work? I really enjoy watching a circle sawmill in person or on a video.
@tractorman44619 ай бұрын
I actually ran a 48, 49 and 50” insert toothed blade on this one with the original arbor. But if you really needed to reverse direction of the arbor it’d be a big job to do it correctly. But if you’re willing to operate it from the offbearers end, you could use a 4 speed truck transmission, figure the ratio, and power the arbor in reverse …?? It’d be a real bugger. A one-off for sure. I’d suggest just trying to find another 50” like I did. I really enjoyed the little Belsaw !!

I love the way this one was built on the bar joists. This is why I decided to use bar joists to build the 21' trailer for the Frontier bandsaw mill. This old Belsaw sat rotting down for at least 30 years. It had a tree growing right up the middle around the carriage cable. I just cut the tree off above and below the cable and let that part rot away. Eventually it fell off.

Awesome video, I’m wanting to get into this type of work so bad! Have plenty of cedar and pine on hand! Any advice?
@tractorman44619 ай бұрын
These particular Belsaw one man saws used to be all over the place and bought cheap. Not so much any more though. If you're only looking for a little side money, I'd look for a bandsaw mill. They are much more labor intensive than a circle mill unless you go with the big bucks hydraulic controlled ones. Then you're at 40 grand and HAVE to make money doing it. Cedar and pine are two of the easiest woods to saw and there seems to be a good market for it. Luckily you have a good supply of it. Another thing that's big bucks is raw edge sawing of hardwoods. Guys love it for making tables and bar tops...even doors. Good luck with whatever you choose. But I have a lot of band sawing videos in my playlist above like this one: kzbin.info/aero/PLk72G9DTzZ1vxi3ger2KJ4HqOCmqD8e1K
@bendugas863210 ай бұрын
I don't mean to be disrespectful but there is no band saw mill that gives you that sound when sawing lumber, I started working in a sawmill at 15 years old and I haven't tired of the sound yet.
@tractorman446110 ай бұрын
No concern there...I agree with you a hundred percent. There's nothing like the howl of the blade echoing up through the holler in a good cut. I prefer sawing on a circle mill too. But I think I'd change that thought if the band mill was fully hydraulic and the circle mill was manual. But if both were fully hydraulic, I'd take the circle mill if for no other reason, for the nostalgia of the sounds.
