Leave it to the Italians to create a stunning mid size SUV. This is the brand new Alfa Romeo Tonale and it’s based on the concept that was unveiled back in 2019.
It’s been delayed because of the chip shortage but now it’s finally here in its production version.
What I want to do in this video is talk about some of the spec and tech but more importantly, discuss this design because it’s going to be really interesting to compare what actually made it into production from the concept which we’re going to do when we jump into Photoshop and show them side by side.
The Alfa Romeo Tonale isn’t a big car measuring only 178.3 inches in length, making it a full six inches shorter than a BMW X3 for example.
This is Alfa's first production vehicle featuring a plug-in-hybrid powertrain and it comes with two powertrain options.
You have the brand new plug-in-hybrid which pairs a 180-horsepower turbocharged 1.3-liter inline-four with a 121-hp electric motor that sits on the rear axle. This is powered by a 15.5-kWh lithium-ion battery.
Combined, the hybrid setup has a total output of 272 horsepower sent to all four wheels via a six-speed automatic transmission. You can drive it on electric power in the Advanced Efficiency driving mode for about 30 miles, not too bad for just driving around town.
It also has three driving modes: Natural, Advanced Efficiency which I just mentioned and Dynamic mode.
The second engine option is a more traditional turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission. This engine puts out a respectable 256 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. Both versions come standard with all-wheel drive.
On the inside, the Alfa Romeo Tonale features a 10.3-inch center touchscreen with Stellantis’ Uconnect 5 infotainment system in addition to the 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster. It comes pretty well equipped as standard with features such as Wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and wireless phone.
The price starts at around $38,000 and it will go on sale early 2023. Buyers can choose between three trim levels - Sprint, Ti, and Veloce.
The Tonale is the first of many electrified vehicles from Alfa Romeo who plans to unveil another one in 2025 in addition to a full all electric car coming in 2025.
