Ultimately it was Clarkson that chose to say things that he knew full well would render him simply unemployable and thus end the show. No media company, and even worse, no government, could have continued to employ Clarkson at that point, and he knew it, and chose to say the stuff anyway. (KZbin literally will not let me write the words he said.) And without him, there was no show. You could have replaced the Stig or the other fellows at any time.

I love Ben Collins as the Stig because I knew when watching Top Gear he would get the absolute most out of those vehicles and the Koenigsegg crash proved that to me. Everyone has to make a living somehow. If a case ruled in his favour, that means any clause relating to prevention of disclosing his role at the BBC after his employment was probably ruled as unrealistic. His brand is being the ex Stig, just like the other three presenters' brand being ex 'golden era' TG presenters. It's clearly fair game for him to make some cash out of it.

He also had the feeling that he was about to be sacked anyway, or at the minimum, phased back. And I still don't understand why a character can't stay a character even if we know the actor. This is very much like what happened to the man inside Darth Vader's costume, David Prowse. Being pretty much the biggest icon in Star Wars, presenting the character so well without ever showing his face - yet when he wanted the rightful recognition, he was sidelined and ultimately replaced by George Lucas.

I think, at the end, it was about money. I can’t blame Ben, either. I think he was simply treated as another behind-the-scenes Top Gear staff when he was, obviously, this huge superstar on par with the rest of the presenters. Seeing them making millions and being able to cash in on their Top Gear fame must’ve been very difficult for Ben who had to remain anonymous. With his newborn coming I think he realized that he wants to make more out of his life. Not to mention, like he said, his identity was pretty well known and TG would’ve probably gotten rid of him anyway. Well, I’m just speculating, but I think it makes sense. Good for him and I wish him the best.

Its nice to hear from the guy now.. But lets be honest. The whole point of the helmet was to make them interchangeable and to not make a big deal out of the individual since the show already had 3 presenters. Its like Mickey Mouse at disney. Its a costume. Those kids get paid minimum wage for standing in the sun whole day playing a roll. No lines to say. They could never make a case to get mickey mouse money. The character was created for a specific roll. Just simple actions on camera and then the driving. Probably alot of guys that could get 99% out of those cars. Its unfortunately part of working for a big corporation. Whatever you create while working for them belongs to them. That's the incentive of working for yourself.

I think it’s a bit much to say he was on par with the presenters. If any of those 3 left it would have made a huge difference to the show. Ben leaving? Not so much. Or even if there was no stig at all it obviously wouldn’t be as big as losing one of the 3.

The *real* villains of the piece were *always* Clarkson and Wilman, who are friends from their school days at Repton, and the situation you describe was created by the production company owned by the two. The BBC went along with it because those were the only terms available to them for access to a hugely successful and popular show. Ben Collins left when his self-esteem caused him to decide that enough was enough - he brought to the show skills which Wilman and Clarkson would have donated both kidneys for, and he was punished for that.

Mr Collins comes across as a nice fella. Good luck and all the best to him. He's certainly put the time and effort in. Back in 2005, I once asked a sports car manufacturer's delivery driver, who had taken a car to the Top Gear track, if he knew who the Stig was, and without hesitation, he replied, "Ben Collins". I knew the name, but when I told my colleagues at work, they all replied, "Who?"

Thanks for sharing. I urge everyone to check Ben's channel. Unlike other influences, journalists, car dealers, anyone, he actually knows how to drive and is eloquent explaining it. I get a new and unique perspective on vehicles from him. For me, the way they treated Ben was always the most disgusting thing about TopGear. He was much too humble here. He created the Stig style and Stig we know. He went enormous lengths to keep it secret and make it work which he didn't need to. But that is what made the Stig so special and so popular. Clarkson said about his enormous salary is a compensation for all the wasted time by people everywhere because he is so popular. Ben's case is almost totally opposite, but very much demanding as well. However, instead of being compensated, they treated him like a disposable waste. The staff and presenters were all friends and all, but in the end, he was out and no one else stood by him in return. I am glad that is over and Ben is in a good place now.

I was once mistaken for The Stig. I was spraying off regenerating scrub on a heathland SSSI not far from Dunsfold, running off a quad bike with a hand-held wand, wearing a white Tyvek noddy suit and an old Arai Giga full face plus wellies and bright green chem gloves. This was just after the Stig had been given the push from ToP Gear and it was all over the news, penetrating even to telly-less me. These two male walkers approached and asked what I was doing. I told them and said that running a quad was a step down from my usual transport and the paper suit was sweaty. (Both true). One said 'Are you The Stig?' I said something like 'Well all I can say it that Clarkson is a bit hard to take'. He goes: 'It's the Stig, it's the Stig", gets his phone out and says: 'This is amazing, this is going on KZbin'. And off they went, happy as Larry. I fired up and got on with the job (and sweating). Made me smile. Sorry, Stig.

Top Gear was such an important show for me during a very difficult time of great loss in my life that lasted 6 years. I used to watch the show every week over and over and fall asleep to the show. The stig's part in all those races to set track times always made me feel good. In some way I wish I could be a stig in life. Definitely an inspiration to go out and push my mental limits. I over came a fear and learned to swim and surf. I know he'll never see this but I'm thankful for him and clarkson, richard and james. That show was/is everything to me. Thank you Mr. Collins The Stig. And also thanks for the laughs with the whole American Stig. 😆

Watching this unleashed a fury of memories. Top Gear was a part of my every day (or close to it) for so many years. As a car lover it sucked you in, but the Stig... the Stig added this element of not just coolness, but mystery, wonderment, always thinking this guy is a legend... but who is he? Ben, you led a life many of us could only dream of, but we also see how much work, stress, and anxiety involved. We appreciate you!

Ben should recreate the Top Gear track and resume the 'star in a reasonably priced car' theme. There's a list of people a mile long who would donate a lung for an opportunity to compete. It would also make a great venue for all of these people who want him to drive their cars to get a benchmark for how well they've done, whether it's a KZbin build or something from a real manufacturer. Just a thought..

Worst part of the show. No one wants to watch that. Rich arseholes can pay for him to teach them but if they redid that segment stuck it on YT no one would watch. I take that back the weirdos who are obsessed with celebs will watch it.

The BBC would sue him into oblivion, as they own the rights to the top gear intellectual property, or at least still own license to it. Gran Tour had a LONG list of things they couldn't do, because it would cop TG's intellectual property. Although you're right- people would love to see something 'similar' or get a chance to take a lesson and then a timed lap as if THEY were a celebrity... with enough changed to keep the BBC lawyers out of it.

Great stuff. I remember arguing with a mate at the time he was convinced M Schumacher was the Stig and got half the pub involved who'd also seen that episode but i just kept saying (as a big motorsport fan) that the driving styles are different plus MS walked differently and the way it was revealed didn't seem right. I'm wondering if he's hesitant to say anything negative for fear it'll: 1. be permanent on the internet. Even if he changes his mind, the public won't allow it because of this recording. 2. It'll hurt any chances of being asked to do anything in the future because whoever asks will be concerned about him saying anything negative. Because anything as large as Top Gear there is 100% going to be issues, it's just unavoidable. 3. He signed a non-disclosure agreement. Regardless, I wish you continued success Ben! Thank you for your time as Stig and keeping us entertained. I've subscribed to your channel.
