750-1 rank outsider, previous best tour finish of 13th at the Western Open that got him here. Sport, we love it for a reason.

And that was just the betting odds. True odds probably closer to 10,000-1 and that's not an exaggeration

I went to the practice days of this. Sunday morning maybe 9 or 10am, so a week before this, we get there and there isnt anything going on, few people milling about etc. Took a picture of the board they have up with everyone who is out on the course and there was just one player listed who we had never heard of. When I went back through the photos a few weeks later I looked at the name and it was Ben Curtis. He has become the maligned poster boy of this period of major championships when there was a lot of one off outsider winners and I don't think he gets the respect he deserves.

yes Curtis was runner up in the pga a few years later and did have a few top 10 major finishes but seemed to drift away about a decade ago

I would rather be a one hit wonder like Ben Curtis and actually win a major, rather than be a permanent nearly man like Lee Westwood who'll always bottle it under pressure and never win the big one
@deancaudle60433 жыл бұрын
Was a great performance by an unknown but he did have a huge advantage on his last shot not yet knowing how important it would turn out to be. If it was the last shot of the tournament for the win the pressure would have been much much greater.

The complete lack of leaderboard information or even individual scores (over/under par) makes this (and other videos of Open tournaments) uninteresting and frustrating.

Agreed. There are fairway lie graphics... Where's the scoreboard??
@DanielSong394 жыл бұрын
It seems like they only have the raw footage and don't have the television graphics which is created by the networks. But that information is so crucial. It proves just how important production is when it comes to broadcasting sporting events.

while I appreciate these videos being made available on you tube it would be so much better with the scoreboard being displayed

Ben Curtis had a 2 stroke lead with 7 holes remaining and made 4 bogeys coming home Similar to Geoff Ogilvy at Winged Foot You can't make bogeys when you're done

Amazes me how many commemts on lack of leaderboard info on this coverage. How about listning to the commentry? This is classic BBC no unnecessary use of stats fact and figures etc. Does any one care about the ball speed when it's been whacked? Only got to look at F1 coverage these days and you can just about see the cars through all the screen clutter. Less is more!

No but basic score and leaderboard info is vital when you have so much going on simultaneously.

Thanks for a great upload,a fantastic Open with a very good examination set up by the R&A. Deserved win for Ben Curtis,wonderful moment with Sir Nick and Fanny on 18,petulance from Sergio as usual. The BBC commentary was at best mediocre,the nauseating sycophancy from the BBC's own Tiger Fan Club was unbearable,Torrance describing a hack from the rough that flew past the pin at 60 mph as a 'wonderful shot' because at one point it was 6" from the flag.... plain stupidity. A reminder of how truly open the Open Championship is and why it remains the greatest championship in golf.

I worked for the R&A on the scoreboard at the 1993 Open at R St Georges, was a spectator at this one. Bjorn should have won.

To be fair Bjorn only had a lead because Curtis collapsed down the stretch

Worst major winner ever. Tiger should have won all these majors, from 2000-2008. Should have won many more than he did. Messed around with dumbass swing changes in 03-04 that cost him 2 very prime years
