H Peli Original had the parallel port too. It had it from the beginning. Then Sony started taking bits away. First went the red, white and yellow connection, in their first revision. In the second revision, the parallel port was removed and the 3rd revision is the white PS One. On another note. The original PS was notorious for the laser struggling to read discs after a couple of years of heavy useage and you'd have to play it upside down. My brother had an original one and that's how we had to play games on it in 2000.

You can find a lot of software online to encode video into NBTV format. Maybe you can try to build the mechanical part of the tv and then connect it to a computer (Raspberry Pi) that receive the NBTV from a FM radio, like a PMR446 walkie-talkie, another walkie-talkie transmit the NBTV video encoded from a computer far away. It was a good game and I enjoyed it but to me, it would have been the master piece everyone is claiming only if the characters were 2D sprites. Honestly, the chibby characters look ugly as fuck even for 1997's standards. It's like they made the battle system at the very end and didn't have enough time/resources to remake the overworld characters/animations. Just have a look at Breath of fire 3 which came out the same year. The backgrounds might not look as good but the 2D sprite characters are much more interesting to look at.

Hi Ben, How would you go for backwards (or forwards) engineering a retro console with current technology but still keeping the cartridge slot? For example: Rebuilding a PS1 or N64 with something like a current intel/amd CPU, HDMI output/Video Cards and DDR Ram etc. Would an idea like that be possible or do the games only run on certain architecture? Many thanks and keep up the great work. Shane.
@whatsmyname4818 жыл бұрын
+intheblues yeah, i think its not possible due to architecture, i dont know much about tech like this guy does, but most of the current consoles dont have backwards compatibility due to different architectures, xbox one does have backwards compatibility but thats because it emulates the games. Remember the 600$ ps3 era, i think it was so expensive because it had a ps2 shoved inside, when they got rid of that (slim models) it got cheaper and started having less heating problems etc. but im nowhere close to being a tech expert, so take what i said with a grain of salt, besides that, i think it would be a waste, would be like buying a quad 980 ti sli machine to play minecraft, you wouldnt use 99,99% of its power

Both systems had amazing games. N64: 1080 Snowboarding, Banjo Kazooie, Beetle Adventure, Blast Corps, Conker's Bad Fur Day, Diddy Kong Racing, DOOM 64, F-Zero X, GoldenEye, Ocarina, Majora, MarioKart 64, Super Mario 64, Super Smash Bros, Perfect Dark, Pokemon Stadium 1&2, Pokemon Snap, Star Fox 64, Star Wars Rogue Squadron, Star Wars Racer, Turok, Wave Race 64, Yoshi's Story. There are some more for the N64 but a lot of these are straight ports. I'm not hugely knowledgable on this library but I think from whats in this list you get a fucking amazing experience and a wide enough array of different games (except for RPG's which the 64 just outright was dog poo) to keep you satifsied for a whole generation. PS: Armored Core, Breath of Fire 3-4, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, Colony Wars, Command & Conquer Red Alert(Retaliation is even better), Crash Bandicoot 1-2-3, Devil Dice, Dino Crisis, DOOM (Quite possible the best port of this game up till that point), Driver 2, Kingsley's Adventure, Final Fantasy I-II-IV-V-VI-VII-VIII-IX-Tactics, Gran Turismo 1-2, Klonoa: Door to Phantomile, Kula World, The Legend of Dragoon, Medievil 1&2, Metal Gear Solid, Oddworld Abe's Oddysee-Exoddus, Rayman, Silent Hill, SoulEdge(blade), SkullMonkeys, Spyro 1-2-3, Syphon Filter 1-2-3, Tekken 3, Time Crisis, Tomb Raider 1-2-3, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2, Twisted Metal 1&2, Vib Ribbon, WipeOut XL(2097)... I think that'll do. My overall experience with the N64 is that its built off its first party titles. The Nintendo games on that system went on to practically define what some of the series games became, such as Zelda (Ocarina of Time is literally the highest rated video game ever made on Metacritic), Mariokart, Smash, Mario 64 (which is one of the most important games ever made as it redefined platforming forever). On the other hand, third party was Sony's strength, allowing for a ridiculously diverse library of good and bad and was the main reason that there were more weird and experimental games on the PS (ie, Fluid, PaRappa the Rapper, Music, etc.) but there were some games on PS that were also extremely important IMO, like Metal Gear Solid (First real-time in engine cutscenes and innovative story-telling format). Final Fantasy VII, love it or hate, redefined RPG's forever and started the RPG boom on the whole console leading to a huge shift in the gaming industry. Gran Turismo was very important in pushing racing games to the simulator realm. Here are some negatives for both systems. The N64 was designed internally like shit. Developers hated it, 64mbs of cartridge space was just pitiful, draw distance was very limited in detailed environments (hence heavy use of fog to hide this in some games) and polygon count wasn't as good as PS1. Nintendo were just absolute pricks about giving out their code library to developers and the N64 controller was also unappealing to a lot of people. PS1- texture warping looked like shit. Dithering is something that was rampant in PS1 and while you couldn't notice it on CRT's back in the day, it affects a lot of games now (MGS, Silent Hill). 1st gen of PS1's had crappy laser racks and you had to turn them upside down to get them to work. Lots of really, really shitty or average games from hack developers looking to make a quick buck (look up Phoenix Games) due to having the same problem the NES had- wide third party support- even though I'd say amount of good games on the PS is higher, the N64 library was more consistent quality-wise. Ultimately, regardless of hardware, both consoles have some of the best games ever made. I have to say I don't think you guys really made any effort to try to find good examples of ps games... Medal of Honor?? pfft. okay. Not that its bad... Serious bias towards N64 though. Kinda cringe. that took a while to write lol

Like how N64 games look cleaner but less textured or something (like compare Tekken 3 and Metal Gear Solid to Majora's Mask or Banjo, or something). The reason textures warp on the playstation when close to the camera was that the ps1's gpu can't do perspective correction. The texturing is treated as a linear 2d operation, and 3d projection is a non-linear transform. The textures will look fine when facing the camera but if they are at an angle, the textures appear to distort when in fact the issue is they aren't distorting the way should (non-linearly). The closer they get to the camera, the more obvious the distortion is. Weirdly enough, they fixed the issue with perspective correction for textures in the PS2, but they still did color shading as a linear operation. That's why the lighting on polygons always looked a little off on the PS2 compared to the Gamecube and Xbox. Sony always seemed to emphasis speed over correctness in their chips and developers refer to them as "stupid fast".

The PS1's polygon warping wasn't a flaw in the hardware so much as it was that the hardware wasn't fast enough to do floating point math for polygon coordinates (subpixel accuracy) with usable speed. The PS1 *was in theory* capable of a high-accuracy mode similar to the N64, but at crippling performance cost and AFAIK never used; Conversely, the N64 was capable of a low-accuracy mode like the PS1 for better performance, but Nintendo forbade it to give the N64 a visual quality advantage. The PS1 also lacked a Z-buffer (for sorting polygons by depth in the scene), meaning that polygons in close proximity would visually overlap and flicker. The N64 did have a Z-buffer, but it required a lot of memory to use. The PS1's texture warping was a result of using what's called affine texture mapping. What this means is that since each object is made of triangles, the textures weren't "aligned" relative to the triangles, but instead to the camera. As the camera moves, it "guesses" at what the correct appearance should be, and since one triangle is often closer than another, that results in the wavy, often jumpy textures the PS1 was known for. The N64 uses perspective-correct texture mapping, which eliminates this issue. As a side note, the Saturn used quadrilaterals instead of triangles for rendering, which made this a non-issue. Quads could also render rounded surfaces more easily, but the industry settled on triangles since they were faster and simpler to render. Quads are still in use for 3D modelling since they're cleaner and easier to work with, but are almost always converted to triangles for rendering. The N64's blurriness was a result of its use of texture filtering to smooth the appearance of low-resolution textures. Which is normally fine, but it uses a unique, cut-down 3-point filter instead of 4-point (better known as bilinear), resulting in that trademark blur. That, and a *4KB* texture cache. Really. The Visual Interface chip also heavily filtered the image, especially if output via RF which adds its own blur again. Modded-in RGB output doesn't suffer from that. The N64's Jumper Pak was actually a Rambus Continuity Module / CRIMM, which was, yeah, essentially a terminator. Early Rambus designs required modules be installed in pairs, so that's why the system won't work without a Jumper Pak or Expansion Pak. Both the N64 and PS1 were capable of outputting up to 480i, but typically output 240p like most older consoles. Not only was 480i more demanding on their GPU, but it also came at a significant framebuffer size increase, which is why the high resolution modes seen for the N64 are usually used in games with Expansion Pak support. Menus, FMV's, and 2D games were generally safe to run at 480i for both consoles, and this was in many cases preferred where text readability (mainly in menus) was important.

Mix Bag Ummm... he did mention golden eye. One of 2 games I ever played on the 64, btw. The other was Mario. Golden eye was a fantastic game. I was a little too old when the 64 came out. It seemed geared way more for 6-10 year olds. People of my age range who grew up with the original Nintendo went to playstation which I truly feel was the actual evolution of the Super Nintendo. We went to high school, and gaming went with us with the PlayStation. The 64 was for the younger gen who may have played the snes, but didn’t really grow up on those pioneering consoles. I had an Atari as well, but I was born in 79, so the Atari was already on its way out when I discovered Nintendo in the mid 80’s.

I remember reading some dev's text about consoles of that era. Xbox had it's problems, like while it had double the ram compared to PS2 they needed to downscale some textures because it didn't support non-power-of-two res. in any way.
@jc_dogen7 жыл бұрын
PS2 was better in some areas than the gamecube though. Burnout 3 was originally gonna be on it until the devs realized they couldn't get it to handle their physics engine fast enough. The PS2 had 2 was clocked a lot lower, but had way more general purpose floating point power with it's 2 dedicated vector units. In most cases the gamecube was overall faster though, and it was definitely a lot easier to develop for. Also the PS2 didn't have texture compression built into the GPU, but it had plenty of cpu power to do it manually, which lots of games did. It also had an image processor, which was partially intended for it as well, but no games ended up using it.
@AxiomofDiscord7 жыл бұрын
Wrong the Gamecube could perform over 10 Billion floating point operations per second and the PS2 could do a little over 6 Billion. But this is where the Xbox really shined and blew everyone away at 120 Billion but overall the CPU of the Gamecube and Xbox where so close and a GPUs where not as general purpose back at that time particularly the way the Xbox used its so that really brought them closer to one another. PS2 does however beat the Gamecube in Memory Bandwidth so it has that.

The N64 also have to load the code from the cartridge, because it only offers around 4MB/s of access rate, which is just hopelessly slow for any sort of code running. But its still fast enough to perform all sorts of almost realtime data streaming. This makes N64 be prone to a certain trick called "cartridge tilting", where you disconnect the cartridge just enough to cause glitching on the reads but not enough to turn the system off, which makes some funky stuffs like textures loading all wrong, or goldeneye having characters spazzing like mad.

Something which basically didn't exist for the N64 due to the storage medium being so expensive and limited: Demos. It's interesting that hardly anyone ever talks about that. I vividly remember playing demos of PlayStation games again and again because they were so good. And they usually came bundled in with other PlayStation games or with PlayStation magazines. Pressing demo CDs for the PlayStation was dirt cheap and they could afford to pack them in with magazines or just hand them out for free. If demos for N64 games had been sold with N64 magazines, every magazine would've probably cost something like 20-30 dollars.

+DREAMATRON If a random guy would appear in the intro bits of a woman's KZbin channel for let's say make up tutorials. But after the intro he would not be in the scenes at all. only to appear in the outro to say some words I would be equally interested in why that guy would be there. Is he a make up artist? is he her husband? Why would he be in the video? Same question would apply in reverse situation. So maybe I can get an answer like Oh her name is so and so and she has her own channel where she does so and so. go check it out. and I would. and possibly discover another cool YT channel. So WHO is she..?

I really don't want to go into much depth trying to refute your trivial argument. I've seen her working hands on with Ben in montage shots during several videos. The Saturn was the best 2D gaming machine of the bunch. It even had a memory expansion feature even before the N64 hardware came out. The issue with the Saturn was Sega not anticipating the move to 3D and tacking on the 3D processing units late in the game, resulting in a console that was the hardest to program of the three and that didn't have as many hardware graphical features as the other two. There were many forward thinking features for it, including a modem, but 3D was not its strength.

You should have included a Sega Saturn just to see the mess that the particular board was with the last minute changes Sega made to it (it was a very messy architecture). Some things that were not mentioned in the video: PSX--- - At the time the PSX was revolutionary in a few aspects to compensate for the slow read speeds of CDs. One of these features was "CD Spooling" which meant the console would continue reading the disc, and loading data, as you were playing. This allowed games like Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver to stream levels seamlessly without loading screens (save for the initial boot up). - The PSX was also capable of hardware video decoding which allowed it, coupled with the extra CD storage space. to display video smoothly, at full TV resolution, and at a much higher quality than competing consoles at the time. - The PSX also had a "high resolution mode" which allowed the game to be rendered at a full SD resolution of 640x480 (closely matching the 720x480 standard TV definition at the time) compared to the more standard 320x240 (and less) resolution of most games. This was used in a few games most notably Tobal no1 and no2, games which also ran at 60fps and used the hardware Gouraud Shading to produce a very clean image. - Sony released to the general public the Net Yaroze which was a black "developer's" PSX. It came with all the development libraries and allowed anyone to create games for PSX on their computers and test it in the Yaroze plugged to it. You could then upload the code to a website for other Net Yaroze users to play. From time to time the best creations would also be featured in Sony's own Playstation Underground demo discs. N64--- - The big selling point for the console, pre launch, was what the partnership with Silicon Graphics, at the time top of the line in 3d graphics hardware, meant for the games. The console was heavily promoted for its hardware-based capabilities such as anti-aliasing, tri linear mip map interpolation, and Z-Buffering, among others. These features were highlighted as making the games look better. PSX vs N64--- - While the N64 could do things like Anti-Aliasing with hardware many developers didn't use the feature after launch because it was very costly to processor performance. Killer Instinct Gold, for instance, was one of the first games to drop the use of the feature due to the frame rate impact it caused. - A few developers used software texture filtering on the PSX that could produce a nice result similar to what the N64 could do with hardware. One good example is MDK. Most developers, however, just relied on higher resolution textures in order to maintain performance and create larger environments. - It was common for multi platform games to look better on the PSX than the N64 due to the higher texture resolution and less aggressive texture filtering. Games such as Forsaken looked sharper and cleaner on PSX compared to the muddy textures on the N64 version. Hydro Thunder, which came out also for the Sega Dreamcast, had the best performance on Sega's machine but even then the PSX version featured effects, such as water reflections which the console could do in the GPU, which were absent from the DC and N64 versions. - In terms of raw processing benchmarks the PSX could render 350,000 polygons per second (roughly the same as a Sega Model 2 board at the time), while the N64 could only process 150,000 polygons per second (roughly the same as a Sega Model 1 board at the time). The Sega Saturn sat in the middle capable of rendering 250,000 polygons/sec. This is why models in PSX games usually had more polygonal detail while N64 models were lower resolution compensated with shading. - The PSX did not have upgradable RAM, like the Sega Saturn and N64 had, but many games allowed for 4 player multiplayer with the use of a Multitap accessory, including games such as Crash Team Racing.

What I really liked about the PS1 was the FMV sequences that were way above the Sega CD in range, without the grain, and all the video saturation that was the biggest hinderance of the time. PS1 was also easier to program for, and the game manufacturers and creators had a lot of modes and filters at their expense to take advantage of, which Sega struggled with, as their hardware used for the Saturn was more difficult to program for, utilizing the chips way differently than most of the hardware of that time, but fared way better than the Jaguar which was pretty much doomed right out of the gate (mostly for the same reason)

PS1 technically came out when the Snes still had classics being released, and almost 2 years before the N64. So it was partly a "transitional" system (16 bit to 64 bit console generation) and still strong enough to compete with the N64. Ben basically confirmed what I always guessed back then. PS1 had better audio, and raw polygon pushing on screen. N64 was faster in everyway, sharper visuals. Love both systems, good video.
