I had the privilege to see a revival of Ben Hur and Spartacus on the big screen as a double feature. If I ever win the lottery, I'm opening my own movie theater where I can play the classics like this on the big screen, where they were meant to be seen. And Charlton Heston, well, that man is a legend.

I have said it before and I'll say it again, "If you love the movie, read the book!" It's a 19th century publication by Lew Wallace and it's free from many places on the Internet. It was a most popular book back then and it still influenced our society in subtle ways. It's well worth your time.

@@markfortin3502 Despite the fact that he wrote one of the most impactful stories of the 19th century, he spent his post-Civil War life trying to clear his name of an error that he did not commit.
@lomax343
@lomax343 9 күн бұрын
@@station_18327 Yes and no. There was confusion over which road Wallace was leading his division down - Wallace and Grant both deserve some blame for this: Grant probably slightly more. When Grant worked out where Wallace was he rejected Wallace's suggestion that he attack from where he was. This would've been into Johnston's flank and rear. This was a clear error by Grant, which was why he was keen to pass blame onto Wallace. When Wallace was ordered to retrace his steps, however, instead of simply ordering his division to about turn, he insisted that they should maintain the same order of march, and wheeled his entire column, having the head march back past the rear whilst the latter simply stood there. This was undoubtedly Wallace's error and delayed his return to the battlefield until it was too late to fire a shot on the first day of the battle. Having said that, the early years of the American Civil saw a catalogue of errors on both sides. If Johnston hadn't been killed there would've been some harsh questions about his handling of the battle. This is unsurprising, as everyone was essentially learning on the job. Even men who'd been in the army twenty years found themselves commanding bodies of troops many times larger than they were used to dealing with.

We are carefully throughout millenniums attuned to cut all the anarchic liberty swearing and sexuality provide to the individual (the only liberties it has) in order to be better controlled via our rulers who represent death, negation, annihilation, control, massive sheep heard movements done via sweep of their hands.

Though the Romans called them pirates I doubt these were really pirates. Pirates don’t sail in fleets and certainly do not engage in naval warfare. There is simply no profit to be made in battles. A pirate’s forte would be in seizing merchant ships or three or four pirate ships raiding a coastal port or town. But to put to sea in a fleet and hunt down a Roman Fleet and purposely turn towards them and engage? That is the hallmark of a military power. These are either Macedonian or Egyptian Ships. Or perhaps a fleet from a Hellenistic Kingdom like the Seleucid Empire or a Maritime Power like Rhodes.

You are completely wrong. Pirates in those days sailed in huge fleets and lived of blocking ports and taking tribute from coastal cities. They were so strong, that it took creating several navies to wipe them out. They also raided certain coastal areas. Pirates were a serious force and comprised not only runaway slaves, but also military deserters, they were well organised. Romans had to undertake very serious effort to suppress piracy in Mediterranean

One of the best scenes in movie history! But an analysis: “Consul! According to testimonies, while the enemy was around, you were asleep! You should instead have worked out a battle plan with your subordinate ship commanders! Actually, you had no plan! You throw away the advantage of having the falling darkness in your back, you could have used to devise surprising maneuvers! You put all your chances into a reckless massive head-on attack, leaving the outcome of the battle to fortune of war! It was soon all mayhem, leading to unnecessary losses of life and ships, including the sinking of your own flagship! Apparently, you took no precaution to protect your flagship by positioning a flanking vessel on each of your sides, and you exposed it to ramming, by undertaking impulsive, thoughtless engagements with the enemy, instead of coordinating the actions! During the battle, you directly commanded the ship’s artillery and archers on deck, while you have NCO’s to do that! You should have stood on the tower, overseeing the battle and guiding it! It is only thanks to the courage and skills of your crews, officers and men, that the enemy could ultimately be defeated!”
