I did Cairn Gorm, Ben Macdui, Cairn Toul and Braieriach over a couple of days, camping as we went. The weather was absolutely perfect sunny and warm. I count myself lucky to have spent 3 weeks at Loch Eil Outward Bound, this was a bit of a drive away. So many memories.

Top tip! If you’re heading up, you MUST walk past the trig point at the top a further 50m and take in the views west! It’s so easy to miss this and turn back, but keep going!!

It's not so bad Cairn Gorm itself, it's the crossing over the plateau to Ben Macdui that can be tricky in winter. The wind up there is forecast to be pretty rough today so it might be more enjoyable to leave it for another day anyways. Hope you manage to get up there soon!

I was up Cairngorm earlier this week. Even in relatively good weather it is pretty brutal at the top. This area needs absolute respect, it can kill you. On the flip side to that, it is a fantastic introduction to hill climbing with very good, clear paths to the plateau. The pathbuilders were out doing their magic round the back of the mountain at The Creagan Dubh and my route took me up to the plateau and back down to the upper car park. It's a great walk.

That was yet another enjoyeable film to watch :D We have been to the Coire you pointed down to when you were up by the finicular track. It was so so windy we could barley stand up so we had to just do the sensible thing and turn back down the hill and to the car park. So we never got to the top of Cairngorm ! Maybe next time we will just head up the way you went by the track.That beetle was great and I love to see the snow bunting on the tops of the mountains. Thanks for sharing and preparing us for our trip north very soon :D Teddy

A long time ago I did this trip on cross-country skis. It was very early May and there was still a lot of snow about - I can even remember hail at one point, along with intermittent mist. The northern corries are a great place for less adventurous trips when the weather is unpromising.

Sounds like a fantastic adventure Neil! I saw many cross-country skiers heading out onto the plateau last week. The mist must have been unnerving, quite a tricky area to navigate in when the fog rolls in!

@ScottishMountainGoat5 жыл бұрын
Hey Keith, The main problem in summer would probably be the wind. The good news is that you can always walk up to the summit of Cairngorm at least and make your decision then if it's too windy to continue or not. I've you've got a map or a couple of GPS's with you, you should be fine. Cheers, Kris.

Another great vid! I love the Cairngorms, but haven't got around to climbing any of the mountains there yet. I always seem to spend most of my time checking-out the reindeer's. Just out of interest what sort of time did it take to climb from the Ski lift car park to Cairngorm summit? The last time I was up there we weren't allowed to leave the restaurant without an official guide, otherwise i would have bagged it.
