Ben Mankiewicz of The Young Turks and Turner Classic Movies is familiar with talking about the problem of money in politics, but today he talks about the everyday problems people face when trying to deal with banks and loans. 70 million Americans are out of the banking system, and the system needs some serious change.
Watch the documentary here:
• Spent: Looking For Cha...
Spent: Looking for Change is a film about everyday Americans without the financial options most of us take for granted and the movement giving them renewed hope. To find out more and take action, visit spentmovie.com/.
Turning to pawn shops, check cashing services, and using payday loans to meet basic financial needs can be costly for many of us, with $89 billion a year going to fees and interest* for using these types of alternative financial services.
It's time for change. New technology, new ideas and encouraging dialogue around this issue can help make managing money simple and more affordable.
American Express is presenting this documentary to help improve financial inclusion in the United States. Academy Award®-winning filmmaker Davis Guggenheim is the executive producer of the documentary which is narrated by Tyler Perry and directed by Derek Doneen.

It's good when he's on it. There are others I don't like as much but it's always watchable.

I completely agree with Ben's point. Keeping wages secret is a bad idea for the obvious reasons, but I'll also give an anecdote that probably isn't what you'd think of... I grew up in a pretty middle class home. I kinda considered it upper middle class, but it probably wasn't. We lived in a modest home, but had ATVs and a boat at any rate... The thing is, even until I was 18 he wouldn't tell me. Hell, even until now my dad won't disclose his old salary, and I'm 29 and he's retired. When I turned 18, it was like a culture shock because I had no clue at all how little I made as an assistant manager at a fast food chain compared to other people. All of the sudden bills and rent were too much, and well... It just went downhill from there for years. I'd grown up being told that college was paid for, but when I graduated high school the money wasn't there... This was 2003, and my dad blamed it on 9/11 and the stock market. I think he just spent it on bills and stuff after he got laid off... I never even knew about Pell grants and FAFSA... Finally I'm going to college to pursue a deep passion for biology. Finally. I could have my PhD by now.. Long story short: Home Economics shouldn't be about cooking and sewing, it should be about maintaining a home.

Employers usually don't want their employees to talk to each other about what they earn - in my experience.

Ben, I would right now worry about hedging your home. I would ask myself. How many years would it take for a person to buy my house. And if it were much above the long term average. And if I didn't want to sell I would be furiously looking for a way to hedge any paper losses I could take on the property. I've seen Robert Schiller's futures. It doesn't seem to be well subscribed. Anotherwords, there aren't that many contracts being bought and sold that you could expect to hedge your home's price that way. Maybe a real estate ETF that shorts real estate in some way? We need home price insurance.

That is, how many years would a person have to save up if they used their entire years salary to purchase your home.

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 SPOILERS BELOW!!!!!!!!!! Not by any means an amazing movie (I was kinda underwhelmed), but Gwen's death in Spider-Man 2. UUUUUUUUUGGGGHHH!!!!!!! She's, like, falling and stuff, and then the web, and the hand, and the- the- MOTHER OF BUTT!!!! She hits the ground REALLY freaking hard, and you know she's dead cause you read the comics, and you're about to shed nerd tears, but you hold it back because you knew she was going to die. Then. Oh man. The blood. The blood coming out of her nose. I didn't cry at the moment because I was on a date, but later that night. UUUUUUUUUUGGGHHHHH!!!!!!!!! The blood coming out of her nose was what did it.

Hmm, maybe if either of these guys knew anything about money, this might have been interesting. If everyone suddenly knew how money worked today, we would be rioting tomorrow.

The reason why people don't talk about money is that they're scared of looking like an ass for making too much
