Different people different tastes...all I can say is that my buddy had two Nissan GQ and GU, both with several motor issues and couple new motors and always with little gremlins. I had several Toyotas always drove them very hard and basically thrashed them during foresty work and hunting but never had any major problem or the cars broke down

Nissan definitely isnt the better build quality between the two. I've worked on both brands for years. In terms of reputable and reliable 4x4s all Nissan really has to its name stake is the 4.2, the rest of their diesel motors are good but fall short of the Toyotas in terms of reliabilty. Toyota has more than just one reliable diesel motor to its name sake. the entire L series motors are bulletproof, the 1HZ is better than anything Nissan produced, the 2H, 13B diesels are all tougher. The GQs have beefy suspension components, but so do the cruisers and the 80 series is a tougher and more dependable vehicle all around than the GQ.
