Please hear me out. I used to utterly despise this movie until about a week ago. I still am bored by most of it, and I still wish Luke hadn't been an old hobo. I by no means think this is a great story. But 1. If ur gonna blame anyone for Luke's arc, blame JJ. He wrote Luke in Episode 7 as having been on a tiny island for six years. What was Rian supposed to do, say Luke still can't find the jedi temple on that 1-acre island? Say he's too scared to fight? This was the best Rian could do, and he has Luke redeeming himself in the end. 2. Forget most of the movie. The parts with Luke or Kylo are interesting, if u can accept Luke's arc. Then, the best part of all, is when they're together on Crait. I used to hate the Crait battle. And I still don't like the beginning of it, or Rose's awful line after crashing into Finn. But once Luke arrives, and he gets that moment with Leia. The music kicks in, he kisses his little sister on the head one last time, the music rises even more, resistance fighters lift their heads to witness THE Luke Skywalker, and with a classic John Williams theme that gives me chills, he walks out to face down the entire First Order with nothing but a laser sword. But there's a twist. One that used to piss me off. I complained, "why didn't Luke actually go to Crait?" Well, aside from the fact that he didn't actually want to kill his nephew, we also have to remember what Vader (kinda) says in the very first Star Wars: "technological terrors are insignificant next to the power of the force". Luke proceeds to straight PUNK Kylo with a clever new force ability we haven't seen before (it's good that they aren't recycling the same old things, and it's good that they didn't make it OP- using the power causes you to die). So Luke creates the spark that will light the fire that will burn the First Order down, and he did it without ever taking a single real swing, or putting anyone in danger. Aka, by going back to the Jedi's roots. The answer isn't to end the Jedi, it's to revive what they were meant to be, before they became corrupted. By not going to Crait, he didn't have to kill his nephew, the First Order didn't get ammunition for their propaganda, getting to say they killed the mighty Luke Skywalker so the galaxy might as well give up. Instead, the Resistance saw him take on the First Order and win. They saw him take a hundred blaster shots and a lightsaber through the body without getting a scratch. So while the movie was kinda boring and weird, everything with Luke, especially on Crait, is amazing, even if I'd rather the movie not exist. Since it does exist, we might as well enjoy these few brilliant scenes with our hero, Luke Skywalker, straight owning the dark side yet again. Not to mention, say what you will about his script, Rian's directing, the visuals, John Williams's music, and the acting of Mark and Adam really make these scenes beautiful. Those two actors really sell it. Adam perfectly sells Kylo being had, like he's completely befuddled. I encourage everyone to not make the same mistake I did. I was so busy feeling bad about Luke failing to rebuild the Jedi Order and being a hobo that I couldn't enjoy the great things this film had to offer, even if it was only a few. I couldn't even see the intent. I just interpreted everything in the least charitable light because of how the film started- with Luke tossing his saber. Not to mention Disney was already going to be intensely scrutinized, and we as a fan base had a bias against them, and thought they probably didn't know what they were doing. It turns out that, while that's kinda true, Rian's film is actually a lot deeper and meaningful than I previously realized. At least the stuff with Luke. Everything else is meh

@@ryanboggs8685 The sequels arent even as well shot as the prequels. Maybe from a contemporary point of view the acting is better , but even that is problematic because its not Star Wars acting. People complain about the prequel acting but it is more similar to the OT acting than the ST acting is. In TFA, the camera zips and zooms and doesn't stand still enough to display any kind of epic visuals like we got in the first six movies. The movie is just a bunch of action scenes spliced together, and there is no time for reflection and therefore no time for character development. The movie is very loud all the time, and there is no time to develop any kind of tension.

I only liked episode 3 when I first watched them but after all these years, and especially after having seen the Disney Star Wars crap, I now realize that episodes 1 and 2 weren't that bad after all. I mean, there was SOMETHING in those movies, there was some soul in them with a cogent plot and story and it definitely enhanced the Star Wars story as a whole. The dialogue was bad and some scenes were annoying, especially those with Jar Jar Binks, but as a whole they enhanced the story in the originals. The Disney movies on the other hand, bring absolutely nothing to the table, they're creatively bankrupt with some wokeness sprinkled on it. I'd take the worst parts of the prequels over anything in the sequels.

How to make Finn a better character. They should have never made him a janitor (which apparently was for comedy) instead a trooper who had killed Innocents (have him murder villagers in the force awakens) and he has this journey of pushing himself harder than any other rebel because he wants to atone for his atrocities. Later on through the trilogy if someone ever asked him if he feels he has atoned, he would tell them that no, that no matter how many people he saves, he still sees the villagers he killed in his nightmares, and he now knows he can never atone for what he did. A character that gritty and conflicted would have been far better, add some comedy SOMETIMES but keep him mainly a soldier who will forever seek to forgive himself, but may never achieve that. I really feel he was wasted for the sake of comedy.

Just as Anakin could handle a pod racer at 947 kph as a 9-year old, without any training, you mean?
@brndnwilks6 жыл бұрын
Anakin states that he had been in pod races before, just never finished one. We can infer that he has had some training (most likely self taught) and that he has experience pod racing. Additionally his connection to the force simply gave him quicker reflexes in piloting the craft, it doesn't equate to Rey being able to use force powers in a day that took Anakin, Luke and all other force users years to learn
@ErikBlomqvistSwe6 жыл бұрын
We've rarely seen what people connected to the Force can do at their earliest stages. Luke could see the Marksman-H combat remote without any vision, just by some basic "feedback" from Obi-Wan. Same thing with Rey, she could see things by some basic "feedback" from Luke, but she could not control it - at all.
@brndnwilks6 жыл бұрын
I respectfully disagree. Luke blocking shots from the combat drone with help from a Master is shown to be a basic exercise for younglings, his only other use of the force in the first movie was enhanced perception and reflexes while piloting in order to destroy the deathstar. He doesn't showcase his ability to force pull his saber(poorly) until the second movie set 2-3 years after the first, the jedi mind trick in the third movie set 4-5 years after the first and after grueling training with Yoda. Rey displays force pull(against a more well trained opponent) and the mind trick on her first day, as well as beating a highly trained opponent with a lightsaber with absolutely no training for any of it(Pre-meeting Luke). The dark side = Quicker, faster, etc. That's Rey, she hasn't earned anything.

C'mon, Last Jedi was fantastic, I think the scene with Ray and Kylo after they kill snoke and the guards is probably one of the top 3 finest moments in Star Wars, when Kylo puts out his hand and asks ray to join him the emotional impact of the scene is only equaled by "Luke, I am your father." In some senses the emotional impact of the Kylo and Ray saga is greater because we really don't know that much about Darth Vader in episode 5 so the "I am your father" scene is really only powerful because of Luke's journey, however the Ray Kylo scene is a pivotal point for BOTH Ray and Kylo, who, together with luke, form the core of the Sequel trilogy.
@manniman825 жыл бұрын
They're both trash. TFA was a scene for scene lower quality rehash of A New hope, replacing the every day man Luke with a Mary sue. The plot points are incoherently connected, their only worry was to evoke nostalgia for episode 4. TLJ, was the work of an egomaniac that decided to shit on everything Star Wars had been up until then, an incoherent mess THAT STILL was a rehash of episodes 5-6. Both are creative failures and it's no wonder that everything Star Wars has been trending down since TLJ came out.

I could have written Episode 8 better in my sleep. I would: *Have had the "bombers" fire warheads that didn't go "down" in space *Had Leia killed in that explosion so: -They wouldn't need to explain how she died an inconsequential death between episodes 8 & 9, -They won't bring her back with poorly done CGI like they did in Rogue One with Tarkin and Leia -Her death would have a huge impact on Kylo Ren's emotional state and force alignment *Make Luke Skywalker the same character as he did in the Trilogy: -I would use a similar backstory for Kylo Ren that was used for Desann and Jacen Solo. Make Ben Solo/Kylo Ren someone who believed that the ends justified the means like Jacen/Darth Caedus -Instead of Luke trying to kill him in his sleep let Kylo Ren be disillusioned with the NJO like Jacen, then Luke and the NJO try and confront him for fear that without their guidance Kylo may turn into a dark jedi. There could be a confrontation from an argument escalating into a fight between Kylo and his friends vs Luke and the Jedi loyal to him, leading in the Jedi's defeat and Kylo and his followers joining the First Order *Remove any crap slapstick attempts at humor such as the Poe mocking Hux and Finn being reduced to comic-relief instead of being a serious character. -Make Finn have a more serious demeanor and relevant to the story *Get rid of Rose and the whole idiotic forced love-interest side story *Have the final battle take place on an environment we haven't explored yet that isn't too similar to the battle of Hoth (they show it's salt and not snow so people can't easily say TLJ isn't a ripoff of ESB) -I would have had the battle take place on a city planet like Trais or Fondor, or maybe even on Manaan, Jabiim, Nal Hutta, or Dac (Mon Cal) *Had Luke translate Chewie instead of Rey. In fact I would have allowed her to have some flaws (not personality flaws, she already has enough of those) so she's not a complete Mary Sue that could just win the whole damn war on her own with minimal help. *Make Holdo turn out to be an undercover agent of the First Order, but cover up the reason she withheld her plan from her subordinates. I think it would explain a lot. *No porgs. *Luke Skywalker not being shown milking that damn cow thing.

I don't want to be rude but: I think you would not have done it better. You just take out everything that is considered bad by public opinion and having it replaced by legends ideas or left out how to handle it. Even though you made some good points you did not explain how to do the rest. Take the rest how it is? Then it is 90% of Rian Johnson's script. How would you make these 90%? I think that if you started writing the first scene you would realize that it is extremely difficult. Yes, the movie had its flaws but it also had some good parts.

Noah Zbinden After thinking about it, if I wrote Episode 8 it would be fundamentally different from Johnson's script. I meant to say even Johnson's version of E8 could have been less hard to watch if he made it the way I said. If I wrote episode 8 I would try to be as original as possible, except maybe have Luke training Rey the way Yoda trained him with Rey going through character development to overcome her arrogance. And instead of Luke being a defeatist loser, have him be open-minded, optimistic, and maybe unorthodox. Also you claimed "considered bad by public opinion". Are you trying to tell me what I did or didn't like about the movie?

SJW brainwashing aside, this was just a poorly written story. So many plotholes, loose threads from TFA, poor character development, story lines that went nowhere. But their worst sin was how they treated Luke. The scene where Rey and Kylo team up has a few fatal choreographical mistakes. For example the dude who splits his weapon into two daggers gets Rey in a hold where he could stab her in the back with his dagger and Rey can do nothing about it. But they just edit his dagger out so I guess he stuffed his dagger up his ass since he doesnt have it anymore
@victoriouse6 жыл бұрын
Not to mention that Rey is also "super good" at fighting vs all these different weapons, and has no problems defeating these "royal guards". Stupidly boring
@mace70776 жыл бұрын
That's hilarious because I watched a review of that fight scene and they didn't even mention that one! That means there is more than one way that they would have killed the "jedi/sith" in that scene, a second part is that the staff fighter behind Rey is about to make contact with her head with her back turned and instead of re shooting the entire scene since it was horribly choreographed they instead have him swing the staff in an arc motion from making direct contact with her head to over two feet ABOVE her head, rather than making her duck. Utter trash, what do you mean best scene, it felt as slow and clunky as A new hope's scene with Obi-Wan and Darth Vader. Nowhere near the speed or intensity of the last fight scene in Revenge of the Sith.
@MK-133376 жыл бұрын
Mason Palframan Yeah that's the second big flaw I saw. Plus it has a few strikes that aim at the weapon of the enemy (be it either rey/kylo or some of the royal guard) instead of the person. I think Pixar is the great example here. when acquired Pixar had a process that Disney tried to majorly alter( types of movies and frequency) because Pixar movies were like 💰. but altering the formula saw diminished returns so Disney seems to have made a compromise: leaving Pixar to make their style of original movies and only tweaking the frequency up a little. with Star wars they should have retained Lucas not as a director but as an executive producer galactic story Lord. and they never should have cut the expanded universe. and what kind of sequel to complete a trilogy could u possibly have after this film? it feels like the beginning or a one off. the only film that fits the style( with pacing and action story structure) is Rogue One.

They were the real her-o's of the movie. 🤨 But I could have tolerated all the SJW garbage if not for the film's largest sin, which was to completely revise Luke Skywalker. You're telling me that a Luke of 30 years prior, an appreciably weaker Jedi, brought back the most heinous, Jedi-killing, and universe oppressing villian in history from the dark side... but an older, wiser, more compassionate, and stronger in the force Luke was going to chop his own nephew in half over a "moment of doubt"? This trilogy would’ve been much better if Kylo was the main character.

Astrosive Can anyone say what The name "Kylo Ren" means? It doesn't sound like a villainous name, actually. It sounds like a protagonist.

Astrosive he essentially is, this entire movie is dedicated to his arc

Joseph Thurman lol I think Snoke actually said the meaning of his name when they were talking I can’t remember though

Nolan Beck That would’ve been a great ending. I kinda thought that was gonna happen in the whole Rey and Kylo fight scene. That scene was still great though.

Every decision they could make in this movie was one step away from being awesome, and yet they failed every single one of those decision and it turned out shit.

All of the Lucas haters are now eating their words. At least Lucas had a story to tell with the original trilogy and the prequels, even though at times it wasn't done the best. With the new films it's just a nostalgia fest with no other substance/vision to them. I'm afraid this is all Star Wars is gonna be under Disney, I'd have Lucas in charge any day.

Dont forget the sjw politics in TLJ.

thunberbolt two This is what Disney does with its franchises, they start inserting their political beliefs and then shove it down the audience throat, just look at Forces of Destiny that is pure feminist propaganda. This will probably be the last Star Wars movie I see which is a shame to say.

It's a shame Lucas never got the help he needed. Before TPM, he went to various directors and writers (Spielberg, Darabont) for help but they all turned him down, feeling that the franchise is best left in his hands. The man admitted that writing and directing was his weakness.
