So if any of the denominators are zero, the other values could be infinite and the legitimacy would still be a divide by zero error. Maximum legitimacy for having no regulations but infinite violation of rights. Sounds legit.

Jesus, there's so much wrong with this. First of all, your assumption that any of the variables would be zero or infinite. Secondly, infinite violation of rights would be infinite in the denominator, which would mean the answer of the equation "approaches" zero, so the legitimacy of the government would "approach zero". Sort of like when Iran murders citizens for not covering their heads in public. Finally, if you didn't fuck up that part, dividing by zero is not infinity, it is "undefined". You receive an F. You got the math wrong. Had you showed your work you would have probably only made the first error. Sadder than that, 18 people liked your comment.

Well, you can do this sort of thing, just on a much simpler level. For example, a vicious lie would be referred to as "L to the Vth", and written in scientific notation as an L with a much smaller V on its upper right.

Or are you arguing that murdering a fetus the day before its expected birth is somehow "pro-life"? Are you talking about COVID policy? When adjusting for age, Florida had the 20th fewest COVID deaths, better than Rhode Island, New Mexico, Michigan etc. You seem to be ignorant any way we look at your statement. Well done. I can see why you enjoy the Seder community.

I think Shapiro demonstrates consistently that he is on the Asperger Spectrum. His speech pattern and toneless voice. His obsession with simple answers for complex socio-political issues. A one sided intelligence best demonstrated by his fictional book "True Allegiance". When he debated Alex O'connor, Ben was like a bright school boy in front of a mature and worldly Professor but both are of a similar age. So, what does that say about Ben's fans?

I love that the brackets/parentheses are totally unnecessary and R-prime and A-prime have nothing to do with R and A. But Ben knows equations sometimes have brackets and primes, so his equation needs to have brackets and primes. Makes it more mathy.

@@quickdrawmcgraw3567 It's not braindead at all. Mathematics is a hard science because it's incredibly abstract. Law is the opposite, because it concerns actual human beings in real scenarios. There are all sorts of nuances, contradictions, and grey areas. The two disciplines have basically nothing in common, so there's no point teaching mathematics in a law course (or vice versa).

@@elephantman2112 I disagree. Mathematical thinking used to be pretty hand in hand with law; specifically proofs. For example Abraham Lincoln had the mentality that he couldn't become a lawyer before learning Euclidean proofs. I think math should be taught especially since a JD is a doctorate in jurisprudence which is a branch of philosophy. Philosophy can be communicated mathematically but in law it just isn't anymore... Ben Shapiro best exemplifies this here lol. He wants to be a political economist so bad but didn't establish his lemmas, theorems, or clarify that the model is independent of the real world but meant to model it.

What it shows is that all these "facts over feelings" and "logic bros" care about is the *aesthetics of reason, philosophy and logic* not the actual practice or study. They know that philosophy and formal logic and higher order math has fancy equations and it seems super hard and smart, so they want it too. They want to FEEL as if they are being logical because they FEEL like its superior to their opposition whom they claim are hysterical - projection, of course. Its all performative and a facade, much like everything on the far-right...

As a physicist, this segment is really a tell on Ben Shapiro right here. This is his entire schtick in a nutshell. He takes "smart people things" and uses them to present himself as far smarter than he actually is, as a way of legitimizing his ideology which is no different to any other conservative. I'm not going to say that in physics (or especially astro) we don't do some conceptual equations like this as a way of representing how variables might impact one another. But even in those rare cases there's an understanding that it isn't actually quantifiable -- it's just a way of stating proportionalities. Or in other words, Ben thinks these things contribute or detract from social cohesion. So he should just *say* that. He doesn't say it, because he'd rather obfuscate from the fact that it's just his pet opinions like anyone else.

Theres another comment that gives it a real good term. People like Shapiro are obsessed with the “Aesthetics of logic, philosophy, and reason” which is very spot on for describing fascists. They only care about aesthetics that make them appear powerful, regardless of it’s actual context (IE Warhammer 40k being fascist/crusade glory p0rn despite the fact that Humanity is failing even with them going fullblown theocratic authoritarian), and in this case its bogus math.

Yeah, rule #1 of establishing scaling laws is dimensional analysis. So all of the terms in the numerator have the same dimension? Any power scaling like in chemical reaction rates? Is this relation a constant for all time? Not even first order changes in time? Ben Shapiro is just doing really standard issue cargo cult "science", trying to borrow legitimacy from mathematics / science by giving the most superficial appearance of math/science with absolutely no substance underneath. Im a sociologist and we actually do some conceptual equations too but WHERE IS THE FRAMEWORK BEN, you cant just lavel some variable “social solidarity is when we behave in solidarity duh” and expexting to just work as a metric Now I get why these people think so low about social sciences. I don't really see any issue with the formula as an attempt to quantify govt legitimacy in some heuristic fashion. Those are all parameters that would make sense to show up in anything attempting to model that. I do want to point out that there is 100% certainty that he did not make the formula up. Nobody who is comfortable thinking about formulas mutters their way thru them the way he did here. The areas he is focused on as variables are likely quantifiable in various scenarios btw. Proportionalities are quantifiable too, even if only for comparisons (which is all that would be relevant here anyhow). Knowing the precise forms of the relationships doesn't matter much in context here. I don't really get why he is choosing to multiply the various elements tho. Ok, so now that is out of the way... My issue with his (befuddled) presentation of the ideas here is that he imagines he has ever been on the side of legitimized govt unless it suits his own agenda. With Dems in the WH/Senate, he is actively anti-govt. When a right-winger controls those sectors, he only then finds that govt to be legitimate, no matter what is going on with his parameters. How much do conservatives promote the wellbeing and interest of the electorate? How much do conservatives really care about being responsive to needs of the electorate? Did they promote healthcare legislation? Did they fight to keep things like drinking water safe or strengthen the EPA in the decades since Nixon created it? Do they focus on infrastructure? Nope. So conservatives aren't responsive to the needs of either the electorate OR EVEN THEIR OWN CONSTITUENTS(!). Nor do they promote the interests of those voters (min wage increases, universal healthcare, universal pre-K, entitlements, SSDI, etc). They actively work against voter autonomy, in fact, aggressively so. Are they working against overtly aggressive govt enforcement? Nope, they only work against govt enforcement that holds their own to account while pushing for the most aggressive overreach imaginable for their political foes. Right-wingers have built their entire political identity around restricting and violating the rights of various demographic groups. I guess they are anti-regulation too, so one more point in their favor as far as this model goes...but they aim to deregulate specifically at the expense of the interests of the electorate and the expense of the govt's ability to respond to needs. Sure, they care about social solidarity in the narrowly specific framing where it refers to racial and ideological cohesion to conservative ideals (whatever the fuck those even are these days). But other than that super thin slice of 'S' they don't promote policies that actually promote legitimacy even in this model.

I wrote out the equation in words and it makes no logical sense. To me it's looks like he just made up some letters and then arranged them into a pleasing shape. Like, pointless square brackets, adding together things above the line, but multiplying them together below the line. Are these things whole numbers or percentages? What does "something prime" even mean in the real world? Or are they just there so he can use the same letters to mean 2 different things at the same time. 🤔

Yeah, it's definitely random. A denominator can only bring a number to 0 if it's infinite. So, what is the threshold where it becomes illegitimate? Does the government need to take away infinite rights before it stops being legitimate? Better yet, if it gives back rights (so that V is negative) and the numerator is positive, then does the resulting negative legitimacy make it illegitimate? Giving new fundamental rights is illegitimate? He must be pretty upset with the founding fathers... either that, or it's just letters and operators vomited randomly onto a page.

We know that they exist from observing effects on the environment, e.g. Bernie Sanders. This leads to the obvious question (as your reasoning alluded to), the existence of white-governments, so incredibly Right that legitimacy is emitted and can never be reabsorbed... Now, it should be stressed that just because the mathematical model describes such an anomaly, doesn't imply it's plausible. But, who knows? Shapiro remains optimistic, claiming that "if WAP is actually a thing, then why can't other absurdities be out there too?". Truly a soul with the imagination and curiousity that this world needs.

Once upon a time, I was an applied mathematics major. I love math, but even our professors knew the limitations, especially when it came to human behavior. Benoit B. Mandelbrot once stated in a book, “Clouds are not spheres, mountains are not cones, coastlines are not circles, and bark is not smooth, nor does lightning travel in a straight line.” He was referring to geometry and how the ideas of mathematics do not always equate directly to the real world, but I feel like the idea still stands. Math can do a lot of things, but it can't explain human behavior neatly and it can't make Ben Shapiro look smart.

Ugh, as someone studying math in college, this is so frustrating. By naming one variable "R prime", it implies there's a link between that variable and the previously defined R (in calculus, this is a derivative; it can take on other meanings in other fields). However, there's no link; it's just that both things he named started with an R, so he added a prime to one of them because he's an imbecile.

Aren’t you able to use like, prime notation to denote things other than just derivatives? Cuz in Chem, you can label identical hydrogen groups on an aromatic ring, A/A’ for example. So “regulatory strictness” and “responsiveness” could just be similar to one another. Or, R and R’ could just be two completely different things, and the ‘ differentiates the two ideas, in a similar way to how N and n can mean two completely different things. But, I don’t think Ben thought that through.

Responsiveness + Ability sounds basically identical to “willing and able” which is part of a test most use to determine whether a refugee has a well founded fear. So Ben supports refugees when he said “you’re able to move out of the area.” This answers Sam’s question and problem solved.

For my Econ Master's thesis I basically did the same thing, I made up a model... except I was using actual quantifiable values like time, income, housing costs, etc. I think Shapiro has been listening to too much Freakonomics Podcast (It's a great podcast, and great books, generally objective analysis, everyone should check it out), and by Dunning Kruger he thinks he can do it too now.

I’m studying Computer Science in college right now (a very math-heavy major). He doesn't know that the prime symbol indicates a derivative. He was trying to distinguish the two Rs because they mean two different things. He has no familiarity with the conventions of mathematical notation. He doesn't even understand that you should avoid using the same letter for two different sorts of variables to avoid confusion. He just thought that if he stuck a prime symbol on one of the Rs that it would be OK to use it as the symbol for a totally different independent variable. He's an idiot. Sometimes people do use mathematical expressions to indicate abstract relations (think of the Drake equation) even though quantification of the variables is not available, but in this case I'm unconvinced that his little equation can actually be seen as an expression of a logically coherent concept. He also didn't realize that his brackets were superfluous because of the order of operation rules which gives multiplication precedence over addition in an expression.

@@donnievance1942 The use of a prime to denote something that isn't a derivative isn't necessarily bad notation. It would be an error to assume that any mathematical formula using that notation indicates a derivative, unless it is clear by context. Plus for multivariable functions, the notation becomes ambiguous (is it a partial derivative and if so w.r.t which variable? Is it the total differential? If it's a scalar valued function, is it the gradient?). It is common to use it to mean things other than differentiation, usually to introduce a quantity related to some other existing quantity in some way, e.g. introducing an angle T', distinct from some other already defined angle T, or in coordinate transformations: x,t -> x', t'. But yes I agree he is a total moron, and the notation is just bad, he should have just used different symbols. He's clearly trying to trick his braindead audience into believing he's some sort of genius, why not throw in some greek letters to make it look more "mathy".

Good point. But Shapiro's "avoidability of government" also highlights how much easier it is for the super-rich to move to another state or another country. So by Shapiro's own definition a government is not legitimate in the eyes of any of it's citizens who do not have the financial resources to move.

@@elmersglue6259 There's nothing preventing a draft in the future though. The Selective Service is still a thing. It's certainly less likely since it went so badly during Viet Nam, not to mention that wars have gone out of favor since the last couple were botched so badly even republican voters aren't as big of fans as they used to be. Not to say they don't still want to spend all of our money on defense.

I'm atrocious at math and even I was sitting here wondering what the heck ben was doing making a formula that calls for completely arbitrary values 🤣 But yeah, I need to remind myself that his audience isn't very bright for one, and likely not even going to think about it critically. Clearly doing their own research.

as a mathematician, my biggest concearn is writting an equation and not using Latex. also this is the dumbest thing i've ever seen. why are some variables being added? why are some being multiplied? the variables are measured in what units? how on earth are you supposed to even compare all of these variables? he should have just made a bullet list with "this stuff adds legitimacy" and "this stuffs takes legitimacy away", it would have been very stupid anyway (the variables make no sense), but not THIS stupid. But hey, he used math and logic, because he is Ben Shapiro, intelectual extrordinaire.

So much wrong with this. By the way past elementary school no one uses the X symbol for multiplication. What happens if any of the bottom variables equal zero? This is some garbage algebra.Not to mention what Sam points out about how silly it is to quantify this without any agreement about definitions or rubrics. Your equations should be able to predict reality in order to be useful.

It is used when multiplying matrices and vectors, but it is fairly unusual to see it outside of those spaces.

​@@Drummerx04 At risk of sounding like as big of a geek as he is--If not that he called it "times" instead of "cross," you could tell that he had zero clue what he was conveying in the equation in his crossing what I'd assume to be scalar quantities. Not to mention, a lack of units/dimensions makes it impossible to tell if it's a valid equation. It's honestly pretty juvenile of him, but what should I expect? His understanding of statistics should've been a clear indication that he didn't know shit about math.

@@joemills346 That's part of it too isn't it. Using big capital (English) lettering is an equation is most often seen for Matrix expressions or scalar constants in physics. But hey, even by taking the time to analyze how irritatingly useless and weird his formula is probably gives him a win by wasting our damn time thinking about him lol.

@@joemills346 He's explaining a Poly Sci hypothesis to people using a visual and audio only medium, which is why he typed it up like he did, for his own readability. Your comment about your expertise in math would ring truer if you had noted the errors in the comment to which you're replying. "What happens if any of the bottom variables equals zero?" = The L score would increase. Who doesn't know shit about math again? "Not to mention, a lack of units/dimensions makes it impossible to tell if it's a valid equation." So, you made two errors here. The first is to assume that there are dissimilar units. All of those numbers could be represented as a %, or as against a median set to 1.0 (which is what I would tend to guess). The second error is that we're attempting to solve the equation. We're not. It's a political science discussion in which Ben is using the equation to illustrate seven factors which tend to make governments "Legitimate". The equation may not be correct. Maybe we should just be adding numbers and subtracting numbers, who knows? That's not the point. I give you a D.

@@nealorr5086 Bullshit equations are a well known comedy trope, and Sharpie Pepino is trying to pass one about government legitimacy as a real equation. There's no data, only variables without any calculable values and context, you don't even need to know math to see that this is beyond sophism, he's laughing at his audience's nose with a straight face, backed by decades of media conditioned lab coat effect. Now I'm not sure if you're just confused, or just want your slice of the lab coat effect cake that Ben is gobbling before your hungry, jealous eyes. Following your posting trend in this video, ima go with the latter.
