Ben Simmons. 2018 NBA Rookie of the Year. The 76ers have a history of big point guards winning the RoY award (it’s been Ben, Michael Carter-Williams in 2013-14, and Allen Iverson in 1996-97 (I say big because Iverson and his game were larger than life). The argument for many is justifiably that Ben Simmons was not a true rookie, that he essentially medically redshirted his actual freshman year in the league, and that he should be ineligible.
Precedent was on Simmons side (see Blake Griffin’s “rookie year”), so it was not an unheard of situation, but the fact is that Ben Simmons DID win the award. He did so by filling the stat sheet, 15.8 points per game, 8.1 rebounds, 8.2 assists, 1.7 steals, with 12 triple doubles (second only to Oscar Robertson for triple-doubles in their rookie year. The individual numbers, coupled with guiding Philadelphia to the fifth-best record in the league, including finishing the season with a NBA-best 16 game winning streak, and Philly’s first postseason berth since 2012 allowed him to standout in an extremely stacked field of first year players.
I’m not here to tell you anything about Ben Simmons that you don’t already know. His pace and precision passing remind some of Magic Johnson, while his presence, power, and physique draw parallels to LeBron James. Aside from rookie statistics and the historic season in that regard, Ben was only one of three players to average 15 points, 8 rebounds, and 8 assists THIS season alonside the reigning Most Valuable Player Russell Westbrook and Mr. Four-time MVP himself, LeBron James. The way he can see over defenses is already unfair, stack that with his ability to legitimately defend every position, and you have the makings of an actual nightmare to game plan against. Granted, his shooting leaves a lot to be desired (including this widespread and not unfounded idea that he is actually shooting with the wrong hand), but the way he occupies space at 6’10” (people who have seen him up-close say he’s verging on 7 feet) makes up for a lot of his deficiencies. I like to think about him like a young Jason Kidd with a LeBron-type body. He’s like the remastered Ason Kidd, feels like a newer version of someone who will be basketball royalty; if you will, a sort of Fresh Prince. I do dare say this young man is good at basketball.

His awareness & court vision is honestly once in a lifetime talents. Players like Steve Nash, Jason Kidd, Magic, & Jason Williams had a shot so they could shoot while passing but with Ben Simmons literally being 6’10 pure point it’s like teams know that’s all he can do but they can’t STOP IT. He’s hands down one of the greatest passing guards in the history of basketball. I don’t need a decade to say this his first few years prove it if you watch & realize.

Good compilation. With so much scorers in the spotlight it's refreshing to see a passing first guard. People hate him for not shooting but this is one of the reason why people like him regardless because of this.

Timing is impeccable on the fast-break passes. Sometimes players/point guards will hold the ball too long as they're racing down the court and not pass the ball ahead to allow for an "easier" quick bucket, but Ben is flawless at this. He demands so much coverage when he gets a full head of steam but also finds the right man at the right time.

Might already be the best passer in the NBA. Haven't seen a player who can pass teammates open like that in a while. I guess maybe Jokic can do a little of what Simmons does but not nearly as often. Defenders are almost as scared of his pass fake as they are Stephs pump fake. What's the most crazy to me is how he can throw those pinpoint half-court alley-oop passes yet can't hit a midrange shot. Pretty mind-blowing.

Shit even if he doesn't get much of a mid range game, if he can find a way to put up another 5-7 points a game with everything else he does, he's definitely right in that conversation. I pointed out on another video earlier that nobody in NBA history has averaged 8 assists and 8 rebounds over their career much less 15-20 points plus nearly 2 steals and a block a game like Simmons is doing. If he can find a way to put the ball in the hoop 3-4 more times a game (ideally would be with a bit more range) he could very well put himself in the all time greatest all round player conversation before he's even in his prime.

Matt Norris in my opinion ppl are focusing on the wrong thing I think what he has to get better at is free throws. he needs to learn to make contact and get to the line and shoot good. Most players make the jump from good to great when they realize free throws are important, specially if you’re a slasher like Simmons is
@mattnorris7124
@mattnorris7124 6 жыл бұрын
@@helloyou2394 yeah I do think that's another aspect he really needs to focus on, there's quite a lot of these (what I would call) "elite" young players that are quite bad from the FT line. Simmons & Lonzo are probably the 2 biggest culprits for it despite everything else they're good at and they'll NEED to get better at it to take their games to the next level.

Mike Jones are we talking about the Embiid dunk? If so, I think you’ll find all the good replays of the pass are featured. I say that because the dunk is great and all, but I’m not sportscenter. Even though the sixers don’t want him anymore, he is still a great player and I believe he can be a great fit to any team because of his superior playmaking and defensive prowess. The only thing he has to work on is his shooting, but i believe he doesn’t need to shoot consistently to win a ring as long as he is in a good system which exactly glues with his play style.

I like Ben Simmons..He’s just one of the most frustrating NBA players to watch. I go to the 76ers games and I know. He’s 6’10, fast, swift, strong, and can see plays before they happen. He’s not aggressive at all, he’ll have a smaller player guarding him and he passes the ball away instead of attacking, he always picks up his live dribble at the top of the key, when he drives he’s always looking to pass out of a shot, he’ll be wide open for a 15 footer... wide open... he doesn’t want to shoot it... he turns the ball over a lot because he’s lackadaisical on offense and doesn’t make quick aggressive decisions, and when he drives he’s always trying to avoid contact instead of taking one more extra step into the defender to get automatic foul calls on his defender...I like Ben Simmons a lot but he came into this season the same exact way from last season... he didn’t work or improve on anything... Facts.
@KuroToshiro
@KuroToshiro 6 жыл бұрын
That's not facts at all, you clearly don't watch their games much at all. He is way more aggressive than last year, he's had many games this year where he's had 10+ points after just the first quarter. He's been their most aggressive player early in their games for the past like month. You say he didn't work on or improve anything which is completely false. He's developed a post up game, which he didn't have at all last season and is constantly posting up against smaller guards and backing them down to either finish or kick out for easy shots. He is also wayy better at finishing at the rim. I don't think you watched him much last year because he would always drive to the basket and would miss the layups like 70% of the time and his momentum would carry the ball. This season he is finishing most of those drives with either hand and is in much more control with layups in general. He's also improved his free throw shooting as well. He's also great on defense as well and is the most solid player on the sixers on both sides of the ball. He's also improved his off the ball movement and cutting as well, which is pretty obvious. You saying he didn't put in any work in the offseason is ignorant af, as if you were at his workouts or something. It's the kid's 2nd year playing in the league, you act like players just transform into completely different players in just a few months of 1 offseason's practices. Which is ridiculous if you think that can happen. He's not gonna take long jumpers if he's not ready - unlike Embiid who will throw up like 8 3 pointers a game to the detriment of the team, when there's plenty of better shooters on the team to throw the ball to.

OfficialRelyseMusic Lol. I watch all the 76ers games bro. CSNPhilly bro.. games are predominately 7pm starts.. I take the Walt Whitman Bridge to every Sixers game bro. I’m there live. Ben Simmons is a mismatch problem for a lot of teams. That’s facts. However, this team can beat a lot of teams in the league, but what about the elite teams? What’s my 76ers record against the elite teams this year? I’m waiting. Also, Ben Simmons can post all day... but ELITE teams are going to prevent him for posting up to deep in the paint... and then what’s next? Without a reliable 15 foot jumper he’s passing out of the post every time! Facts. Look what the Bucks, Raptors, and Celtics have done to him thus far this season primarily. Neutralized him. Turning the ball over a lot...What’s Ben Simmons free throw percentage this season? Is he any better? What’s Ben Simmons 15ft jumper doing especially when the playoffs start and teams dare him to shoot? It’ll most likely stagnate the offense which it’s shown to do this far this season....Ben Simmons isn’t a finished product, but there’s still a lot of holes in his game.. I can go on and on... Defensively he’s better I’ll admit that... but in the playoffs you have to have more than one way to score because ELITE teams have time to scout and take away things he’ll like to do. Facts. Just stay tuned.

Great tip for NBA all star Binn Simmons: take the ball all the way in and slam on LeBron James , you have the ability and you will throw his game off track. He is already intimidated by Embead. 2. Put emphasis on getting your passes to your team mates when passing, do not take for granted that the defense is not alert. You have the strong hand in this so let’s make the best of it and get what you came for, that ring!!!!!.

Simmons needs to understand that he will never be guarded outside the restricted area ever again. The they will sag off him and play as a free safety when he has the ball. If he doesn’t start shooting the ball handling ability and the passing will become redundant and coaches will put him in the dunkers spot which will reduce his impact to that of a Kwame brown

Forget Horford, Harris, and Butler we should have stayed with Ben and Joel keep them surrounded by JJ, Marco, Ersan, Shamet, Shake, Korkmaz, Shayok, Thybulle, Covington, Saric...thats sooo much shooting and defense...and instead of wasting a pick on Smith we could have Shai!! Or Took a chance on MPJR or Simons...think of this we could have drafted Ben Simmons and Pascal Siakam in the same draft!!! Then Tatum the following year 🤯 Simmons, Shai, Tatum, Siakam, Embiid with a bench full of shooters and defenders

Idc what happens or what anyone says. Philly should not nor ever split the Ben Simmons and Joel Embiid duo up.

Literally the only better passer than him in nba history is magic Johnson and Jason Williams. But i put him over jay will cause hes 7 ft passing like that. Like woah thats scary. Thats honestly the deadliest art in basketball the art of passing. Let alone when youre 7ft and have the handle to get to the paint at will

Jason Williams 😂 White chocolate was a flashy passer, but nowear near on the level of Lebron, Magic, Jokic, Doncic or Ben Simmons,these guys can make any type of passes because of their size, speed and strength

BEST PASEER IN THE LEAGUE. lebron amazing but ben has has just taken the top spot in a close call. Jokic also amazing but cant run or jump. Most of his passes come from stationary.not that its bad but Ben can do that but can also do it going faster than almost anyone not named fox or westbrook. BEN is gonna be all time, people slowly getting used to it. Honorable mention for leagues best passer - Milos , Steph , Rondo. CP3 and Harden good in pick and roll after 20 dribbles. Lonzo getting there. Trae YOUNG gonna be in conversation down the track. i thought DeAngelo Russell was gonna be a big time passer, still time. hmm People who never gonna make the list- Melo , shabazz mo, wiggins , dwight , jonathan simmons, cj mccollum, and if he doesnt change his ways Tatum will make the shit list also
